Wild swimming

So, in this "heat wave" we're enjoying I like to go for an outdoor swim to cool off

there are some great rivers and pools at the edge of the Brecon Beacons.

But do you have any personal recommendations?

B & M Bargains

There's a place near me that's lovely and clear, not wild swimming though, it's organised sessions. So busy at the moment though, last October was lovely, if a little cold!

I've been in Salford quays and the docks at Liverpool. Can't say I would recommend them though

BOLDON COLLIERY

a word of caution about swimming in lakes and rivers when it's hot;

the water can still be very cold and induce shock, there are lots of reports of drownings due to cold shock every summer

Gullet Quarty near Malvern is great.

.

Been "spoiled" a bit lately by two drownings.

Tragic for the families but basically both were pissed up youths who were not good swimmers "tombstoning" from a ledge into deep water with nowhere to get out within 50yds.

I think that's just nature's way of ing out cretins from the gene pool

Deep water should be avoided, and quarries are notorious for poor exit as well ... so rivers, pools and cascades are the way to go

Plus gently in the first time to avoid thermal shock.

When we were kids we were never out of streams and rivers, it's sad that safety concerns keep young kids away while they're naturally cautious, then suddenly drink and bravado has them jumping into quarries without ever learning the basics.

We go kayaking on our local rivers, you can't beat it on a day like today.

Closest we've been to you OP is skinny dipping at Symonds Yat while we were in Bristol.

many places down on the Wye, but not too far down as the current picks up a bit much

Not really so many on the Dee up north

I know it's not the same, but.we did paddle over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct last year.

That was one for my bucket list

The Dee round there didn't look too bad from memory? (Is that the Dee under it?)

I've taken a barge over it ... seriously nerve wracking

yeah the water under there isn't too bad in places but can get a bit shallow (yep it's the Dee )

Just be careful of what's below the surface

If it's man made (clay bit quarry etc) the es going to be machinery, old reels of wire, and all sort a of other shit that got shoved out of sight and out of costly disposal fees.

.If it's easily accessible by car or van same thing from years of fly tipping.

Stay on the surface and try to avoid patches of s it's surprising how quick you can get tangled and exhausted

Be careful with waterfalls, sizeable ones certainly.

Due to the amount of air circulating in the water at the base of the falls your buoyancy is a lot less than normal.

Aside from any current/eddys it may produce.

I've seen places closer to you recommended. Spots on the Taff and the Sirhowy rivers if memory serves me correctly. I know up near Whitchurch in Cardiff is a nice pool on the Taff. Not sure if you could strip off though!

I don't mind where they are, I'm more than happy to travel to a good swim

Agreed. I would love to find some nice pools or waterfalls around where I am now but this place makes the Sahara look like a rain forrest.

Just had to google it as I forgot the name, but the blue lagoon at abereiddy is on my bucket list.

Gaddings dam in todmorden is supposed to be nice. There's also a quarry in Derbyshire, I forget where. I think they may have dyed the water black now to discourage swimmers though, some reports say the ph levels aren't right for swimming.

Just google wild swim and you can get a map with a load of places on.

the good lands, the bad lands, the any where you may want me lands

Bishops falls on the Arfon Hwlch as it runs down to Llanberis (Snowdonia) well above the Llanberis waterfall where there was another drowning last year is excellent, a good deep section of river within a gorge a couple of cascades from the falls under the bridge that carries the Snowdon Mountain railway.
