First night tonight

Anybody watching / listening ?

This years season celebrates the 150th birthday years of Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius - so the programme / season has a strong Scandinavian feel to it.

Tonight's prom is an interesting one that includes classics by Beethoven, Mozart, Britten, Mussorgsky and others - and some new compositions by school kids, that have been inspired from works by these composers.

Part of the Ten Pieces project, and includes Barney Harwood and Dick and Dom from CBBC

We had our own concert here; the kids played Ode to Joy and their own composition for piano, trumpet and cello. It worked rather well.

As I mentioned in yesterdays post, tonights Prom is a proper belter!

British Composers.

Entrée: Walton Spitfire Prelude and Fugue - marvellous (what a tune!)

Starter: Vaughan Williams Concerto accademico (rarely heard these days, but a wonderfully lyrical work featuring Chloe Hanslip on solo violin)

Fish course: Welsh composer Grace Williams work Fairest of Stars (featuring soprano Ailish Tynan)

After the interval a little amuse-bouche in the shape of Elgar Overture 'Froissart'

And then the main course: Walton Symphony No.2

A veritable feast of British music from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales... under the direction of Tadaaki Otaka. Tuck in and enjoy!

Agreed, although I would say the Glenn Gould interpretations are fascinating - comparing the 1981 recording to the original 1955 one.

Tonight is a cracker!

John Wilson and his orchestra at the Proms has become one of the anticipated concerts of the season.

This year he is devoting the entire night to Leonard Bernstein - Stage and Screen.

On the Town, on the waterfront, candide and of course west side story are among the delights to be heard tonight.

If you are missing it tonight, watch out for it when it is broadcast (this one is normally shown on bbc 1 or 2)
