Was a tad late for a flight today.check in let me through as long as my bag would travel as hand luggage.

Was told to go through express security lane - sounds good I thought. Get special treatment I thought. Might do this to avoid ques I thought.

NO! It would appear that as a late arrival it is time for them to check everything in your possession. Everything was swabbed for traces of drugs or explosives.

I was scanned, hand searched and scanned again. I lost hair product (those that know me will know please not my hair), I lost shower gel - Only just opened.

Hot the all clear ran to the gate -yep it was closed. Not a chance of getting on, even though passengers were still boarding.

Had to change flights.

Grrrrrr that is all.

How long stuck in traffic?"

Long enough to make him late. What does it matter how long? He was clearly early enough for check in staff to believe he'd make the flight still but further delays at airport security (whilst understandable) impacted on the situation.

The airlines will not 'hold' a flight for motorway delays, they are fined £1000's for late departures.

Airport security has just become a way to control the masses and keep them in check, after all what other service would you pay for to be treated in such a manner, we put up with the poor service, rudeness, searches, our possessions forcibly removed and were wouldn't date complain, all because we've been fed a lie, the terrorist threat is frankly minimal, any terrorist group could blow up a plane if they wanted they just need to buy a first class ticket, or fly from the Harrods terminal at Stansted!

most airlines close the boarding gate 20 - 30 minutes before departure time, so why would they still allow you to check-in (cabin luggage only) 30 minutes before departure time?

If it's of any comfort to you, we couldn't book our seats online for Cyprus a couple of weeks ago and the only seats they had left were 1a & 1b - best seats on the plane When we got to our hotel we were told our room of choice wasn't available, so we were upgraded to a suite - private hot-tub on the balcony

Good things do happen to gits like us

Next time, take one of those things that look like coloured sausages joined together. You may have to pay a bit more, there`s no check in time and you can board up to 1 minute before departure! No restrictions on luggage (except if you plan on taking the odd AK47) And it`s usually city centre to disembark!

It`s called a t-r-a-i-n !

Either way highlights as your friend has found out, relying on the minimum reporting time makes for a stressful & sometimes costly trip.

Ok so sorry for the delay, I've been out networking.

My journey was from Oxford to Birmingham. I left home at 9 which on a good day would have me at the airport for just after 10.10. Due to an accident on the m40 I arrived at just after 11.05. As you can see I left what in past experience would have been long enough to.check in and get a bacon roll.

Now I was not moaning, as I too appreciate the jobs people do at the airport. It was just a post warning my fellow fabbers not to be late, as you may get more than you bargain for.

A warning to others - Heathrow Terminal 5 will automatically block your admission and progress, if you're not at any point by the specified time. However sympathetic the staff are, you will just remain blocked.

It is good to see airport security is working, otherwise all the terrorists would turn up late be flagged through express security lane and blow up the planes.

You turned up late, you had suspicious products, you were obviously agitated.

Three good reasons to detain you for further invetigation let alone give you a thorough search.

Next time ensure you get to the airport in time, millions of passengers do it why should you be different.

"Was a tad late for a flight today.check in let me through as long as my bag would travel as hand luggage.

It is good to see airport security is working, otherwise all the terrorists would turn up late be flagged through express security lane and blow up the planes.

You turned up late, you had suspicious products, you were obviously agitated.

Three good reasons to detain you for further invetigation let alone give you a thorough search.

Next time ensure you get to the airport in time, millions of passengers do it why should you be different."

Something to do with an accident on motorway which unless I am mistaken the op had no control over.

He never said he should be any different however check in believed he had enough time to make his flight as they allowed him to check in.

His original, planned, arrival time would have allowed sufficient time however unforseen circumstances made him later than expected.

Read the whole thread. You might see that I got stuck in traffic. You might also read that I'm not moaning about it. I was merely relaying my experiences to my fellow fab members.

You also stated

"My journey was from Oxford to Birmingham. I left home at 9 which on a good day would have me at the airport for just after 10.10. "

Any motorway driver will tell you there is a high probability of accidents on the motorways at "rush hour" periods on motorways in the UK.

You took a gamble you lost.

Rush hour to me would not be after 9am. Baring in mind most start at 9. And as stated I was not moaning.

All airport security is theatre. TSA in U.S. missed 90% of test runs to smuggle weapons/bomb materials into aircraft. Just lets government say 'look we are doing something'

"Ok so sorry for the delay, I've been out networking.

Just checked! Oxford to Birmingham International by train - leaves 09.30, arrives 58 minutes later. Cost buying the ticket now for tomorrow`s travel £17.60 single. How does that compare with driving, car parking at the airport, getting to the check-in?

Thanks for looking at my options I'd never thought of train! Maybe you could be my pa and plan all my travel for me?

Going by train means leaving home at 8 to get a bus to the centre of Oxford through rush hour (the road works in Oxford would probably mean I would have to leave even earlier ). It then costs £3.50 each way bus fare. Or to park would take a mortgage. Then of course there is the transportation of suit holder, shirts and case and laptop. So not really a viable option.

17.50 single what's the return cost? Parking will cost me £35, and will be a company expense. So all in all not a huge saving.

As said previously I'm not moaning it was unfortunate, and unlikely to happen again. Its just a post in the forum.

"I'm glad security is so tight at the airports!

Lesson for today, give yourself extra time when catching a flight.

I am normally very anal about this. And I did allow extra time. I shall go back to the 2 hours before flight rule!"

. I always allow at least two hours before a flight to check in. I have no sympathy for those who are late or might miss their flight and do not allow them to queue jump in front of me . I fly regularly and have never missed a flight yet .

Have to admit I didn`t check a return and the fare I quoted would have been the dearest walk-on fare for standard class so if you know you`re travelling in advance tickets could be much cheaper! If you go to the National Rail website you`ll get the prices that the operators are charging and not Trainline commission prices!

. Hi. Not perfect and sorry to hear that you missed yours . It is good that you have warned all the other fab members. It is best to have a three hours before flight rule . An hour to clear security , an hour for unexpected delays and an hour to check in etc .

Also take into consideration that trains have a reputation for being late. Therefore it's taking a bigger gamble than going by road. Imo.

Actually, the reputation is not deserved! There has been lots of work to improve punctuality over recent years.
