Britain's government says the unemployed could be asked to sweep streets, help out in community centers or mow lawns at public parks under a tougher welfare regime.

Under possible reforms to the benefits system, the long-term unemployed would be ordered to carry out four weeks of unpaid work to remain eligible for a 65 pounds per week welfare check .

Foreign Secetary William Hague told the BBC on Sunday the plans were intended to help the jobless readjust to the culture of full-time work.

Those who refuse to take placements _ which would include duties like garbage collection and gardening _ would temporarily lose their benefits.

Britain's work and pensions ministry, which handles welfare, said the plans were intended to ``break the cycle of dependency.''

I don't like that idea, people in unemployment don't need to take the jobs of those already employed for such tasks, nor do they need to do menial tasks for low pay.

They do need training and renting training camps from the Forces to teach them new trades and skills would benefit them and the country.

Could this put people who work full time lose some hours just to let others work for the dole , yes it would get some lazy scroungers out of there bed and work all the hours for the benefits 7 days pw

little house on the praire

I think its a good idea, those that refuse to do it should get their benifits stopped and those that do it should get credits, references and maybe a higher unemployment rate. They dont need to take jobs from employed people but do community work.

The only thing that get me about these sort of "schemes" are.......if there are all these jobs that need doing why aren't the unemployed offered them as proper regular employment?

Funny how the government can rustle up jobs when it suits them!

i agree hun but i would not give them credits some scroungers would like that i think make them work very hard and if they get sick of working for there benefits ,it will make them think going full time i have no time for scroungers they should have benefits taken away and kicked out from there council houses

They are, but most people are 'better off' on benefits so choose not to look for work. Hence why we have people come from other countries to do this readily avaliable work

No this will never work one bit. As it will be taking all the jobs that community service do i.e. People who have to do unpaid work as punishment from committing crimes. So if they don't have that i think more crime would take place.

My fella would love to go back to work but its hard since he come out the forces with post-traumatic stress dis-order.

Its a good Idea in theory and Im all for it but as long as they arent going to take up existing jobs off others.

We have to remember too that theres some lazy feckers out there who havent done a stroke of work in their life either and dont intend to....

Im all for training and help, as much and as often as possible for those who want it & those whod rather not!

If people think they are better of on benefits than work I think the government should take away there Luxury benefits and get the scroungers back to work, what should we pay our taxes when you get the scroungers crying about being better off not working! Bull s**t stop the housing benefits and give them a kick in the ass make they work 7 days pw, I might sound harsh but this has been going on a long time David Cameron and Ian Duncan smith have got it spot on,

Oh my god, cant believe Im going to say this but here goes. Bring back national service for people leaving higher education. Instead of armed forces style training they could be trained for various trades both academic as well as manual. Only people exempt would be on health grounds or who completed a university or apprenticeship. I mean completed, not just do a year and drop out.

Will duck now cos am sure this will be torn to shreds!

I was just reading up on this and was amazed there are more than 1.2 million people who have worked for less than 12 months over the last 10 years even though they are fit to. Do people have no shame?

its not about do they have no shame, i was out of work for a year and was sending e.mails and riging companys daily to see if they had work coming up and just couldnt get into work at all, some people want to work and some people dont so how can you tell who is who its very easy to lie.. I have seen people walk into a job centre sit down sign there wee paper to say they were there so they dont lose there money and walk out again so its the people working in the job centres aswell who need to be looked at if they not sitting down and doing a job hunt online with people if they dont have the internet..

It's probably not such a bad idea, given that the local authorities are stretched and apparently don't have enough manpower to carry out their duties.

I'm sure some of the arsey trade unions would have something to say about it though ....
