i was a bit shocked last nite when i looked at the consume by date on a bottle of french mustard i had just squirted on my steak in the restaurant ( july 2006 )

it got me thinking about some of the out of date stuff ive consumed in the past

10 year old tin of asparagus shoots

alchahol from a WW2 bombsight

and i once tried to smoke ciggarretes from a gold tin my grandad got when demobbed from WW1 , but they fell apart

has anyone else been more desperate ?

Not desparate as such, just don't see the point of wasting good food, especially those in tins!

I always buy my Christmas puddings after christmas for the following year, they tend to be half price or even less,in the New year I got some individual ones for 10p lol

I may now give myn a go. lol Thay have alot of brandy in loads of fruits and big cherrys .. normaly dont get cherrys in xmas puddings.

Like anything it is when air gets to goods that things 'go off'

Therefore providing the seal is unbroken good sealed should stay fresh indefinately.

I do believe thats tinned food from before WWI have been opened and consumed with no ill effects

I'm really quite bothered by 'use by' dates on food. If it's just a 'best before' date then I will make a judgement based on the appearance and smell of the item but if it's past a 'use by' date then it can forget it.

Cooked up and ate a pack of smoked streaky bacon that expired in Jul 10 yesterday, and am still alive and well!

It looked and smelt ok, so I thought what the heck!

Something you should all be aware of if you are the sniff it to see if it is OK type:

The smelly bacteria rarely does serious harm….. however, the really nasty bastard bacteria doesn’t smell.

Agree, however, it also depends on the method of cooking and for how long.

Hence freshly fried food seldom cause any harm!

i have one in a basin that my father made, the year he died it`s 30 years old , I change the cloth on it every year and its still looking good

not sure , but the colour on the bottle ( bright yellow ) turns to very dark brown

only tried a small amount , still alive at moment

Sell by dates and use by dates are not for us but the manafacturer

We buy more hence line their pockets.

God knows how my dear old mom got on when this wasnt the norm.

If it smelt bad, was green etc...

you didnt eat.

It it smelt ok and wasnt green...you ate it. lmao

But then even mouldy cheese can be eaten if removing the mould

Often restaurants, cafe's B+B's etc will use a quality/namebrand container to refill with bulk bought products, ie 5 litre bottle of ketchup from the Cash n Carry used to top up the heinz ketchup bottles.

The sensible thing would be to keep an eye on the original containers sell by date but often gets forgotton.

Once upon a time a government department decided it would be a good thing to insist that all consumables contained a "sell by or use by date"

Manufacturers complied but hold on, if we put a can of beans with a 30 year sell by date on it people will stock up on a massive scale, but it was ok, the government didn't say they had to put a date on which was accurate within a safety margin they simply said a sell/use by date.

So the clever manufacuteres thought hmmmm tin of beans, they will last 30 years but we can just put a date 2 years hence on them, that won't stop people buying them to hold in thier cupboard but will stop them stockpiling too many tins.

The British Army has a 25 year rotational policy for it's Ration Packs.

A Ration Pack put together today will under normal circumstances be issued for use in 25 years time, that way they have sufficient stock, sometimes they use a lot more than at other times, (times of conflict or war) and stock gets used quicker but without such situations they know that they have enough stock to deal with military emergencies.

So many products could be eaten well past thier "shown" sell by date, especially tinned goods.

Recently flour in barrels was recovered from a ship sunk during the Union blockade of Fort Sumner during the American Civil War, water had turned the flour touching the inside of the barrel war into a form of cement but beyond an inch of that the flour was perfectly usable despite being under sea water for over 100 years.

Definitely give the curry a miss, chicken is only safe to eat for 3 days after it is cooked, unless you freeze it.

desperate ..... I once stole a boiled potato from a pan of them bubbling away on a cooker, I hid it under my hat and enjoyed it later, yes I was hungry.

I have on occasions cut the mouldy crusts off bread to make a sandwich when the only thing available was the mouldy bread and an egg stolen from a local hen house, I add this was not when living at home but living off the land in desolate places.
