"So - Why - !! Cant we Have - Smoking Pubs for smokers. And - Non Smoking pubs for non smokers. anyone !! " Because unlike Holland, our smoking ban was passed fully in law and is now part of statute. Unlike the Dutch Ban which because of the political make up of Holland never came into full law in all parts of the country. The bars in Holland are also completely different than your average pub in England and Wales, there are far less of them and they are far smaller in size. Because of this they are often manned by just one person, which you rarely see over here. The trend for pubs in England and Wales is to get bigger, you never see Whetherspoons opening a little bar run by one person do you?

"They should all remain non smoking thank you It's nice to come home and find my clothes don't stink of someone elses fags We are in full agreement with you." Im not... im a non smoker myself but think it is wrong that the landlords cant choose if they want to be a smoking pub or not. lets face it, 98%, mybe higher number who moan about smokers prob only go out few times a year, have they become regulers in pubs and clubs after the ban, NO. if they had then why are they all closeing down due to no custom. if you dont like smoke dont go to a smokers bar, if your like me and think that after a night out the clothes you had on are going in the wash then whats the big deal, if your a scuff who wears them again day after then mybe you should think how smokers find the smell of your BO. i have never smoked, never will. but i have never had problem with smokers as there far more important things in life to think about. god help UK when all the smokers do quit smoking. you can say good bye to the nhs and mybe another few 1000 coppers, oh and watch how petrol will go from £1.19 ltr to £3.19 ltr. this is a democratic country, lets treat it like 1, there is lots of things i dont like but you would never see me trying to change them, as i find people who do try to change things to suit them are worst people to spend time with. (MINI HITLERS) not having go at anybody just making it clear that people should be able to make there own minds up, and treat there bussiness like it is there bussiness. im an engineer and breath in far more harmful fumes daily than i ever would in a pub. if you think you seen smoky room then have look in your local works when 50 blokes are all welding galv and woods being cut. going now as party time and got a house party we are burning lots of wood and setting of fireworks. so if you hate smoke you been warned. get your masks on and complain to cameron, mybe you will get bonfire night banned also!

"Was Good to read that Holland realised what an adverse effect the "Smoking Ban" Has had on the economy.. They also claim the Ban has created "Social" and "psychological" Health problems.. i.e.- people not going out and socialising and just staying at home.. And They have Allowed the Little PUBS to allow Smoking Again... I know im in for some shit here lol but i think pubs should be declared, smoking pubs or non smoking pubs..imo " Does this apply to the rest of the Netherlands? Holland being a region in the west of the netherlands. (I know, everybody hates a smartass)

"They should all remain non smoking thank you It's nice to come home and find my clothes don't stink of someone elses fags " A landlord should have the right to declare his pub smoking or non-smoking, let him live or die by his own sword, if people like yourself choose not to go there for either reason then you have that choice and he will either do well or close down but at least freedom of choice will win.

It will never be the choice of the landlord Jed, it will always be the choice of the 'owners' if the government allowed individual premises choice. Because of that and the fact that companies like Wetherspoons and Punch own the majority of pubs and bars in England and Wales today it will never be changed in law.

"I've been a smoker for more of my 45 years than I care to divulge and yet I agree with the smoking ban in pubs, restaurants etc. It is no great harsship to me to pop outside for a smoke and tbh I welcome the breif change of scenery and it is a terrific excuse for breaking away from someone you don't want to talk to, or is getting on your nerves, or if you just want five minutes 'me time'. I don't smoke in the house and I enjoy 5 minutes peace and quiet in the garden checking on my plants etc while I have a relaxing cigarette. Leave things as they are, most people are happy with it." Quite strange how someone who says he is a non smoker is spitting vitriol in a post above saying we should allow smoking and then this one from Wishy the smoker being as (almost) ever the voice of reason! In my book there is not just about the health of the smoker but also the customers who don't and those that have to work there. And some of these suggestions to have some smoking and some non smoking pubs? Most of the smokers I know would only go to the smokers pub and now they have tried it, most of the non smokers we know would want to go to a non smoking pub. As most smokers are selfish about their habit, non smokers would have to go to a smokers pub if they wanted to mix. Before anyone tries the "We are not selfish" line, I did say SOME! And look back at the old threads on this and see how many were quite happy to have non smokers in their environment for very many years, but wouldn't see the other side of the arguement. about clean air! As my dear old Mum says, if the cap fits, wear it!

"Unfortunately they (Wetherspoons and the like) are the future in the pub trade, personally I find them sterile and more like airport departure lounges, but at the end of the day it is only pub chains like Wetherspoons that have a hope in hell of surviving the next decade. They are the ones that appeal to the social group with the most disposable income, and that is the young groups of lads and lasses that fill town and city centres at weekends. " And the dole wallers ! Our local 'spoons is full of them on a daily basis

"It's funny now when you go to a pub in the summer and see about 6 people inside and the beer garden rammed with a few hundred...just so different to four years ago." Like chams smoking deck then and half the buggers dont smoke either

"its debatable whether wetherspoons actually qualifies as a 'pub'. soulless halls of misery. sorry ,I grew up in a south london back st pub and wetherspoon, all bar one and the like grate a little " Wotherspoons etc serve a valuable purpose in the licensed trade. They keep the sort of people who like to drink in that sort of environment out of proper pubs.

Like chams smoking deck then and half the buggers dont smoke either " We love it in summer when we go to the pub and sit in the beer garden smoking and someone complains.... we usually ask them to politely bugger off inside... they have a choice we don't... As for smoking in pubs itself I (mr) used to work in a nightclub 7-800 people and one day we were in fitting new lights it was then I noticed the walls were horrendous with nicotine stains. It makes no difference to us about smoking we do and we at the moment we enjoy it, when we don't we will stop.

Not strictly true though jane. There is definetly a place in brugges where you can smoke at the rear and they sell food goods at the front that are not packages

I say this because I always look for a bar that serves food so I can avoid the smokers. One of the chocolate suppliers I purchase from was closed down for Three weeks in the summer because one of their staff was smoking in their back yard and got caught by the FEVIA inspector, they are at the moment restructuring their list of bars that allow smoking (over 50 sq metres floor). But they are maintaining their ban on bars allowing smoking if they serve any hot or cold food.

"Iconic, its not actually illegal as exempted from the ban were houses, hotels, prisons and the houses of parliament. The first 3 being someones 'temporary or permanent residence'. You still have a number of hotels all around the UK which still have smoking rooms but you have a choice. Its stupid how anti smoking people have got since this ban, quite a few times this past year and more ive had to batter some of them off their high horses. Especially the ones who walk into a smoking area. Live and let live. " I dont really know the ins and outs of the smoking ban in relation to hotels. The hotel was allowing members of the public in (other swingers not staying at the hotel) and serving drinks etc. That said, I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. I knew about the smoking as I had read reviews etc. And I did make the choice to go. As i stated im not against smoking. I would go again as I had a fantastic time with fantastic people. It was just that having go used to going into pubs etc and having a drink without any smoking, you notice it more when the smokings back. Smoke does leave a smell and it does cling to your clothes and it also does make your eyes sting and your throat sore if you arent used to it. Im not trying to be rude or get on a high horse about it. But I knew this before I went so wasnt surprised about it
