I've never been keen on gyms. I'd go so far to say I'm as likely to enter one as I am to ever go on Facebook.

But with a lot of time to kill at the mo and an ever dwindling list of movies left on the hard drive that I haven't seen a dozen times I thought I may as well use this time to try and get a little healthier.

I may venture into the shed and unpack the weights I bought a year or so ago.

I get a fair bit of exercise walking miles with the woof daily.

My right arm is doing ok due to regular spells of 'fly tennis' - electric tennis rackets being probably the best item the the land of pounds sells!!

But I need inspiration for more alternative ideas. Preferably free ones that can be done at home.

Any suggestions?

I don't condone piracy, but you can just download Insanity, T25 and other such programs and do those at home.

Short of that, running and/or interval training at the local park

A really cheap way revolves around the dog walking. Have you considered wearing a good quality backpack with weights? Can just be bricks or tins of food? Maybe take some small weight with you in your free hand too?

walk with your dog for two minutes then run for one minute keep repeating for 20 minutes then have at least a 20 minute cool down or work home.

Dancing to the radio or gardening are free exercise. If you want to do it in the living room stick a dvd on. I find them boring and have to miss a lot out because of my dodgy body. Do free car washes, or charge and get paid to exercise

Go for a run!

If you have a local industrial estate run there in the evening or late at night when you will not attract quite as much attention. Use the lampposts for interval training...

Sprint a post, jog a post, sprint a post...

Then add exercises at each post (press-ups, squat-thrusts, burpees, sit-ups)...

My friend and I go out walking for approx. 30/40 mins every morning at 09.00am, Monday to Friday. It doesn't feel like a chore as we are so busy chatting and looking at the flora and fauna. As I don't work, it ensures that Im up and dressed by 09.00am and not wandering around in my night dress at midday and being a lazy cow!

Feel so much better for it and it keeps me fit for my young men

I know. "Google is my friend". I really should be able to come up with stuff. Mind you - the sports science degree never really got utilised!

The combo of dog walking and anything extra would be tricky - we use the beach and she's a hyperactive social butterfly and quite big so whilst running is perfectly possible carrying anything extra equipment wise would be very tricky.

I'll do some online research when I get a break from my busy schedule!

Burton upon stather

Push ups

Sit ups

Squats

Dips

Planks

There's your classics.

If you're unmotivated try this.

First just do what you normally do but start making sure you drink two litres of water a day. Make a consciousness effort to get the full lot down through the day just worry about this for a week.

Then start on your diet, avoid greasy food and have three meals a day with healthy snacks between, there's plenty on recipes out there to look onto into depending on if you want to lose weight or get muscle. Don't eat after 7pm and continue with your two litres of water do this for another week.

When you've got your diet and hydration sorted you're two weeks down the line and your metabolism will be changing.

Keep up the diet and make an exercise plan depending on your fitness level there's loads you can do round the house.

What works for others might not work for you but before I pulled my back out I started with one of everything.

So, one sit up, one push up, one squat, a short walk with one minute jog, one stair step. It sounds silly but that little was enough to get me motivated.

Next day I did two of everything.

Next day three, then a day off, two days on, day off, three on etc.

Increase what you do everyday.

Fill up two two litre water bottles with water and you can start using them to add weight to lunges and star jumps making yourself bodywork work harder.

Nor do I advise you undertake the insanity program

Yoga would be my advice along with your walking a perfect free combination xx

Skipping is an excellent fat burner.

Takes a few days, and some patience, to get the technique right.

But 10 minutes skipping is equivalent to 30 minutes of running.

(And you don't even have to leave the house)

With a decent diet, you'll burn fat easily.

Get out and about down the park if they have an outdoor exercise area. Do some compound exercises that are freely available on the inter web.

Soon be ripped brah

There will normally be a tramp sleep under a nearby tree to keep you company and well refreshed with cheap lager!!

That's not unreasonable criticism. You do need to be in somewhat reasonable shape to complete the program BUT there's nothing stopping you creatively amending it until you are fit enough to do it in its entirety

I was hoping for a quick fix 'watch this and the weight will drop off' routine.

Back to the drawing board.

What about taking advantage of all those walks on the beach and going swimming with the woofer?

Sea swimming is great exercise and the salt water is good for your circulation and skin.

Just.don't be a wuss - real swimmers don't wear wetsuits!

The woof is scared of water since she fell in a deep puddle on the beach as a pup.

She's a total girls blouse. Won't even walk through puddles when it's raining.

Plus of course - swimming in the sea by us would be more like going for a mud bath. And in a year or two it'll be quite likely that anyone swimming too often will come out looking like the multi-eyed fish in the Simpsons!

I go jogging with my dogs to everybody's great amusement all the local kids seem to find me jogging with a greyhound hilarious

seriously though if you have dogs it's something you have to do anyway so may as well jog instead of walk and kill two birds with one stop, unless you have a small or old dog that couldn't run with you of course

Central

To increase your fitness overall, high intensity interval training rotates very high intensity bouts of exercise, followed by some rest, repeated constantly.

The actual exercises that you do can be chosen depending upon your exercise goals. Strength, core fitness, muscle gain etc.

This style of exercising raises your metabolism for up to 36 hours after you finish, even if someone slobbed out for 36 hours. as such it can help with fat loss - depending on your food intake.

The bouts of exercise need only be upto a minute or so, followed by similar rest time. Aim to exert yourself to 80% minimum of your maximum capability each time.slightly longer rest time is ok, but not too much - say over 2 minutes.

30 minutes total is a great workout.

Identify from some of the ideas what the specific exercises that you would fit you are. Each session could have a few types, not just one.

Fast bursts of running, pushups, using something heavy to do squats, shoulder presses etc are all good, as are your other choices.

Key thing is to do them close to or at your maximum capability. So exercise, rest, exercise, rest, repeated until time is up. One type or several types of exercise per 30 minute bout.

Some light warming up and cooling down outside of your time is good, as are stretches, which helps to prepare and recover your muscles. Review some stretches for legs and other body parts that you'll use.

As a beginner, expect your initial maximum to be lower than once you've got some experience.

Consider your objectives - which aspects of your body and what you'd most like to get from your exercise.

This routine style is perfect to assist with improving your overall strength, fitness level as well as raise your metabolic rate, which often decreases with age, whilst body fat ratio increases. You can reverse this process. Backed by scientific evidence, your investment is just time.
