I'm more of a reader than a poster on the forums but I've noticed a lot of people unnecessarily having a go at people's topics and comments (and I don't mean the "profile help" pages).......

I will get the irony when I get slaughtered for this post

Exactly! Plus anything offensive, bullying etc is pulled by the mods and the person dealt with.

If people can't accept others will have differing _iews from their own and it will not be conveyed in a manner they like they need to get over it: I know it's not easy.

My other half is blunt: it's almost downright rude, until I realised it was his way and he was like that with everybody! Think Jack Nicholson's character in As Good as it Gets!

It's a place where using your selective attention can be a good thing. The posts won't be narrowed to only what the Op wished for, as everyone is free to comment as they wish, subject to all site rules. People do get time outs and banned for inappropriate stuff.

And there are those who make a living from being trolls, all around the internet, posting stuff that inflames and is intended to cause the effects that they often have.

People use the forums as a method to filter who they'd be friendly with in the flesh and blood world, so there are people who can lose out. Stick to what it is that you want to communicate and stay focused.

Sometimes certain posters carry a little history from previous, inflammatory posts, which can colour their subsequent treatment.

Sometimes it is hard to work out whether or not the initial post is tongue in cheek, and posters misjudge, and the OP gets annoyed.

Sometimes, especially when it seems the poster has got the answer requested, everyone has a bit of light-hearted fun amongst themselves.

Sometimes, without the benefit of eye-contact, posts meant as gentle ribbing are taken as personal affronts.

I often get insulted, but I find it only takes one positive statement from someone else and the warm glow you get wipes away the negativity.

And don't worry about your spelling - I find that if you slipp a deliberate one in now and then, it messes with their ocd, and you can get away with the odd genuine mis-type.

A good example of what I mentioned.

If that's your bin one I'd think Obi gave you one of his rare serious answers, you misread it, and then it stopped being tongue-in-cheek pretty fast. Had you seen each other's facial expressions maybe it would have gone differently.

But to be fair, you did insult him first, so it is a bit rich trying to play the victim here.

The ones who preach tolerance on here are usually the ones chipping away at someone in another thread. Then the Knights and forum sheep trip over themselves to agree in a transparent attempt to be "right on".

It's quite funny to watch history repeat itself day in day out.

Forum snobbery definitely exists. There's also occasions when things are decried as being forum snobbery which aren't. I go with the "best to ignore it" approach. So I'm not particularly into kiss/fuck/pass threads, but other people are so I'm not going to start a thread about how boring they are. Or if someone starts a thread I feel like I've answered 10 times already I probably just won't post, rather than posting on it rolling my eyes and telling them this has been done to death.

Yeah I know. But I only know that because I've used the forums for a while, someone else might be totally new to it. So if I see something for the 8th time in a week, I can't be arsed. A month later, I've probably forgotten what I initally said anyway so will be all over it again

I saw that, couldn't be bothered to comment. But I think he got off on the wrong foot because the first question wasn't just what were the ratios, it was "I bet the site won't tell us because it will be bad for business" as though there's some big conspiracy and he'd been lured here by the promise of millions of women. So as Fabio said, it's about perception.

There was no black and white used. Pretty obvious attacks on the op of that thread. Not especially nasty but totally off topic from the original question and typical of what the op here was getting at. Sometimes the c word is the only one appropriate. The word troll is just as appropriate inches case but doesn't convey my dislike of what they do enough.

Granted the site dig didnt help but there was an exercise done recently to try and get an idea of the numbers by various forum members. That went off swimmingly. So he's not the only one after the stats.

Absolutely, and I think that proves the point about perception. The other person who asked about it and got everyone involved did so from a position of curiosity and asking the question for interest rather than seeming to have a preconceived notion of what the answer was going to be.

Don't expect there to be fluffiness and agreement as what point would there be to the forums without discussion BUT some of the replies and comments have seen and the way lynch mobs have descended against people makes us avoid certain topics now as not fans of staring at a car crash.

Definition of a forum:

"a meeting or medium where ideas and _iews on a particular issue can be exchanged."

Pretty simple.

Everyone has opinions. Everyone has the ability to contribute theirs. Whether anyone agrees with them, likes them or wants to hear them is largely irrelevant.

The problems seem to arise when someone isn't clear (deliberately, accidentally or just down to a bad choice of words) as to why they have that opinion or question or when it seems a post is made with no logic, rational argument or for no other reason than to deliberately cause antagonism (the common hand grenade threads), curry favour with others or to generate sympathy/attention for the poster.

There are many with strong opinions that are happy to express them and if there are several of these in any given thread and the general opinion is contrary to the original _iewpoint then this is often perceived as a 'pack mentality'. It's usually not. People can and are entitled to have, the same opinion. The downside to this is it gives some the opportunity to play the 'victim' card.

Expecting everyone to agree with an opinion or support certain _iewpoints is unrealistic. If people have backed up their _iewpoints with rational thoughts and arguments then whether anyone else agrees or disagrees with them is irrelevant. If you have an opinion and stick to it rather than try and fit in with the thoughts of others then any of the 'judgements' that have been mentioned above will at least be based on consistent contributions.

Chopping and changing stances, sucking up or choosing your words dependant on the OP or a poster elsewhere on a thread is obvious.

I'd rather be consistent in my _iews, opinions and answers. It makes no difference to what I post as to whether it's in response to a stranger, a forum regular or a friend. And if someone likes it or not that won't ever change.

No matter what anyone wants to defend, the forum can be a hostile place at times and why you get people starting threads like this. Every person who starts these threads can't be wrong, so maybe people need to listen now and then.

On the other hand someone just disagreeing with another won't be acceptable to some and the "wolf mentality" comments will turn up...... you have to accept people won't always agree.
