Giving up smoking.

I've been smoking since I was 16. I decided to cut the cigarettes yesterday morning. Health benefits aside I have planned a trip to Australia next summer so I'm going to put cigarette the money aside each week to help fund the trip. Great incentive.

I'm trying to do it without the aid of e-cigs. Anyone else gone cold turkey?

Tips are very welcome. xx

Excellent decision, I wish you all the luck in the world. Friends who've given up have used stop smoking apps that tell you how much money you've saved how much healthier you are etc as it goes along and it seems to be a really good visual incentive

I think b you may find that your new fitness regime will help with it

But you may be swapping one addiction for another

Use a dummy/pacifier. I chew on mine when i feel like a cig. I enjoyed the hand to mouth action and the having something in my mouth.

Also i tell myself i'm a non-smoker.

Was a lot easier going cold turkey when pregnant, almost was tempted to get prgenant years ago when i wanted to give up but figured another kid = stress = more cigs probably.

I gave up cold turkey. I knew I'd finally kicked the habit because I threw away half a box. Every other time I quit I kept saying "oh ill stop after this box is gone".

I done cold turkey under 4 yrs ago, kept telling myself I don't smoke, I hate smoke, to this day I've never touched a cigarette but yes I hate the smell,

It's all in the mind,

But cold turkey you need a substitute as you lose the sugar you had with fags.

So I put on over 2stone, but saved a fortune, good luck and remember it's all in the mind

Yeah I went cold turkey 7 years ago after smoking for 27 years. I had tried giving up with gum before and went a few months when my son was born. But was always tempted when drinking with mates who smoked and started again. This time I decided to stop and never smoke again. Seven years and I haven't even been tempted. Australia sounds like a great incentive. Amazingly I can be around smokers and not feel the urge although I avoided temptation during the first couple of months as much as possible. I am also comfortable with the smell except on holiday when smoke wafts across me while sunbathing. I hate that for some reason

I didn't put weight on, but ate more healthily as well. However I've been overweight for over 20 years now so I am now using the fitness pal app to alter my eating habits. My problem is portion size and a few things I like to eat were amazingly high in calories so I'm adjusting my diet again and adding in more exercise so hopefully that will help.

Yep, I did it 12 years ago when I found out I was pregnant.....was all the incentive and motivation I needed.....a little drastic and I wouldn't recommend it as a recognised method for quitting

It can be done. Be strong.

I did it cold turkey as well, 30 a day to nothing hits quite hard at first. Thing was, I wanted to stop. If folk dont really want to, they won't- same as any habit i guess. First thing i figured was what i missed most, it was actually the feeling of the smoke hitting the back of my throat, so i rolled up some paper and taped it up (so it didn't go soggy)- guess that was my pacifier. Only trouble was i hit the jelly babies hard then- put on a stone in a month, so watch out for that!

Good luck OP, you know it makes sense

I used an ecig (one of the ones that looks like a fag) and even after it was out of flavour/nicotine I carried on using it then stopped that a few weeks later remember you're breaking two things at once habit and addiction I think best way is to tackle them one at a time

Good luck though

Yes. Went cold turkey in Jan 1999, having smoked for 26 years. All I did was to chew gum. Wasn't anywhere near as difficult as I thought it would be.

I cold turkey, but it easier if your around non smokers, like a bowl of sweets on the table in a room full of children, think of the tax your paying, bensons are about 10 a pkt 70 a week, a day and half wages if your minimum wage, smoking is for the rich

That's what I smoked, Benson. I was buying the 29 box for the past few months. €13.50 a pack.

Gonna put that money aside each week.

I gave up smoking 22 years ago when I got pregnant with my first daughter I just stopped, there were no e cigs and patches in those days, but being pregnant gave me the incentive I needed to not quit quitting

Then I started smoking again last year, I joined fat camp and I just needed something to take my mind off food so out came the fags

When I get to my goal weight maybe I'll stop again

Cold turkey, lots of chewing gum.

Been stopped nearly nine years now, smoked about 30 a day for 18 years.

1. Forget any kind of nicotine replacement, they prolong the agony. The best way to fight a nicotine addiction is not to keep taking nicotine.

2. Do not take stop smoking advice from smokers. Bizarrely they offer advice, it is useless, if they could quit they would have done.

3. If you feel like you are about to buckle look at a clock. Tell yourself you will give yourself exactly five minutes before lighting up. Early on you get six three minute cravings a day. Get through them any way you can.

4. The cravings do subside over time, the day does come that you suddenly realise you can't remember the last time you thought about smoking.

5. Go on whyquit, read the stories of people who have died through smoking, read the articles. That site got me through some tough times.

6. Not one cigarette. Not one. One is back to square one literally. Don't do it.

Good luck

"I started with a personal trainer last Friday so hoping the new fitness plan will help. Fingers crossed! "

Slightly worrying you are linking the fitness regime with the stopping smoking, it's a common mistake. People get bored of the fitness regime and go back on the tabs. Do the regime for sure, but don't link it in with the quitting smoking.

Great work!

I tried a few years back, Dr put me on a tablet called Zyban, they worked but side affects were horrible!

lasted about 6 weeks though, bad headaches and mood swings, couldn't take it any longer so went back to the dreaded B&H

It also helps if you have a stop smoking buddy, one you can call at any time of the day to chat, let them know how your feeling etc, this is from a clinic I tried about 8 years ago.

Cold turkey is the best way to go, and as soon as I have gotten through the 400 I have left im gonna try again!

Trick is to never give up quitting and try every trick in the book, if you have a sly one, forgive yourself and try again.

Get a Ecig, worried about putting on weight, buy a bike if you haven't already got one and use it, you'll burn fat if you spin the pedals above 90rpm, simply select a gear that allows this as long as you feel some resistance you'll keep going forward its great way to appreciate how much better breathing is without them and you get to see much more of the countryside, in Ireland and Australia.

See what I mean about smokers and giving stop smoking advice. The above advice is probably the absolute worst way to stop there is, it prolongs the harshest part of giving up for as long as possible and very few people could withstand that.
