It's been a while since I last attended a school sports day and sadly, that was one of those non-competitive events where kids ran around on their own with a bean bag on a tennis racket or some other nonsense.

Are these non-competitive things still going on or have they gone back to being more traditional?

I think it depends on the school & the age of the children.

My youngest is in KS2 & they have the more athletic races with placements, which is good as she is very competitive. They also have the bean bag type races too.

Everyone gets a Well Done sticker.

Isn't the bean bag thing just a cheap egg and spoon race

My sons Catholic primary school did competitive sports days.

The kids got stickers for coming 1st,2nd or 3rd & all belonged to one of four houses so the points were totalled at the end to see which house won, but the children who weren't sporty were given loads of cheers & encouragement & the sports days were always a good, fun atmosphere.

Oh dear. A memory jogger. Imagine a sports day with a hurdle race. Imagine a lad who has never run a hurdles race before and is in the lead as he approaches the final hurdle. imagine a lad who sailed across the final hurdle without mishap.

And stopped. No one told him he had to run all the way to the tape, he thought the last hurdle was the winning line.

From first to last in just a few seconds. Emotionally scarred i iz

Hehe reminds me of the long distance run at the end they had put one line down then a set of barriers either side so you "ran through" the crowd for the last bit before the finish line.

I thought the first line was the end and calmly walked up to the desk at the end to give my number etc, couldn't understand why everyone was yelling at me.

Still won though :p

These days though I can't run for a hit

Still have nightmares about sports day rounders. I was on fourth post, waiting for the girl on third post to throw me the ball. I missed the ball, and it whacked me above my right eye. The girl with the bat then whacked the stump (again above my right eye). And the bat whacked me in the same place too. Cue a fractured skull, a unicorn horn full of fluid and the worse black eye the doctors had ever seen.

I don't do things by half.....

I am currently planning a KS2 Sports day. We have 50-80 yard sprints, egg & spoon, sack race, relay, tennis ball throw & standing long jump. The planning is going ok, hopefully it will all fit in with the two hour time slot.

There are points for 1st, 2nd & 3rd for their house teams. All children will get an ice lolly at the end, hopefully the organiser will get one to

Excellent - sounds like a proper sports day! The only time I went to see the Headmistress at my kids school was to express my disgust at the introduction of non-competitive sports. Thankfully she left and it's reverted back to running races etc!

I sometimes wonder if a proportion of the Fab population went to schools with non-competitive sports days!

Teaching the children not to cry when they're out during a PE warm up game is often interesting. Same kid cries most weeks, however I've been there before & he is encouraged to learn about sportsmanship & fair play, he will get there eventually.
