Hypothetically, you are staying with friends and wish to use their internet wifi. Can they see what sites you visit.

It depends on what router they are using or if they have certain settings to flag certain websites up.

Yes they can if they set it up. But it's not something that most people can do without a bit of pc knowledge.

"it's not something that most people can do without a bit of pc knowledge."

Forgot to add this, most people really have no idea about things like this, unless they have teenage kids and wanted to keep an eye on viewed websites but again not many really know and the simplest solution is just to block them straight off.

Yeah its very easy if people use the same pc to check what websites they have been on or store passwords etc. However if it's over a wifi connection on different devices it makes it quite a bit harder for the average person to intercept.

Thanks for the replies. I use a mobile phone and we are goibg to stay with friends on our return from Canada. I just wanted some kind of confirmation, that if l use my mobile ( samsung android mini 3 ) they wouldn't be able to see what sites we were viewing.

Just get the password from their router (normally on back of it) and you should be very safe.

If you're concerned use a tor browser. That way, even if your parents are computer savvy they can't see what sites you've browsed. It also gets around parental blocks and isp blocks too. For Android devices I recommend Orbot with the Orweb plugin.

Speaking as an IT professional...

Generally, NO. Your average household wifi has very little in the way of monitoring facilities available and anything they do have would require someone to log in to the router and read the log files.
