rant but not the normal

ok it's a rant but it's not timewasters or single guys, it's not the failure to reply to mails or any of the usual, it's Tesco and thier jobsworth attitude.

Sasha just went to buy ciggies, she is 28 years old, she was asked for ID, fair enough it's a compliment I suppose.

Tesco rules ignore the law and state that you have to be able to prove that you are not only over 16 but are over 25 to purchase ciggerettes.

Sasha has one form of ID with her DoB on, it is her passport, we are advised by the Home Office not to carry your passport at all times only when needed for travel.

So up step's I, pulled the cash out of my pocket and asked for the ciggerettes, but they wouldn't serve me, they assumed I would give them to her.

I do object to a sales assistant assuming that I will break the law, that is not what she is paid to do, even the Police have to be carefull when assuming someone is going to break the law.

OK so I would have given them to her away from Tesco's, surely that is nothing to do with them when we left the premises.

The customer in the queue before us was not challenged despite having a 10ish year old boy with him, so what right do they have to assume I will break the law and not the guy in front, or indeed any family buying spirits, knives, ciggerettes etc.

Families go through the tills in thier hundreds unchallenged with spirits and wine, the French drink wine at almost every meal including the children, some British families do to.

I don't object to the law, I don't even object to Tesco playing it safe and imposing thier own 25 yr olds rule that is thier perogative but I do object to them assuming what I will do and not others.

I believe it is Jed discrimination

She even said "the police are in the store" which they were, two uniformed officers buying donuts (assumption cos Tesco can assume) so what, does she mean if the Police were not around she would have served me ? whoopee, the Police raided my house with a search warrant earlier, it doesn't mean nothing, just a case of mistaken identity, it didn't make me do something I wouldn't normally do.

Anyway the WPC's were more embarrassed than us cos we were in the middle of a photo session, the male PC's seemed to appreciate that.

Thats because the fine if you get caught selling goods to underage peeps is thousands and you and the shop can be prosecuted.

Its te same if you suspect that the purchaser may supply an underage person with these goods, be it alcohol, fags or lottery tickets!

So it is their job on the line!

Sash, thats a compliment, annoying but still a compliment!

Totally agree, common sense should of prevailed and the assistant been able to see Sasha looks over age even if she may have not thought she was over 25.

I believe the 25 year old rule is in many shops now, not just tesco

booked tickets from Dover to Calais for later this month.

Ok so we already booked a trip to Paris last month but your intuition was nearly there, almost worth going the extra miles into Switzerland they are only £2.50 a pack in the supermarkets there and can use my Swiss account so no need to pay extra for euro's

omg are they really that cheap in Switzerland. my partner and i did 2 months touring back in aprildoing France, Switz,Beligum and Italy. We made a trip especially to Brussels for the cigs as we were under the assumption by friends that it was the cheapest place.

It's happened to me and my daughter in Sainsbury's. They asked her to prove her age. When she couldn't i said I'd buy the tobacco. They wouldn't sell it to me as they knew it was for her. The tobacco was for Sasha and not you Jed. They know that. You know that. So they didn't sell it to you. Annoying but not wrong. They thought she looked underage and acted on that. Pissed me off to have to go to another shop but it doesn't make them wrong. Oh .... my daughter is 25.

Whoops got my story wrong but that's okay at my age. It was only filters we wanted not tobacco which made it even worse.....

No Granny it's not right, my objection is to the lack of continuity, I bet there isn't a person on the forums who has not witnessed a family or themselves getting the weekly shop which may often include items that come under age control such as scissors, knives or alcohol, you stand there with your children aged 8 - 14 and they sell you the stuff without batting an eyelid, then every now and again they refuse to serve someone, I understand the law and the fines that shopkeepers face but it's wrong to discriminate no matter what that discrimination is, stop selling alcohol and ciggerettes to mothers and fathers who have children with them if you want to be honest and fair.

Who gave the shop assistants the right to judge me and decide what I am going to do with the ciggarettes, which were for me as Sasha smokes different ones to me and I showed the lady my last ciggie in my Embassy pkt and Sasha showed her nearly full pack of Lambert n Butler, it had been Embassy Sasha had attempted to buy but she just wasnt having any of it.

As you can probably guess I made quite a fuss, though calmly and politely.

I had a bottle of wine with my home delivery but they didn't leave the shopping because my daughter was 17! I was surprised they asked!

I, as a parent, trusted her enough to sign for the shopping and not neck the bottle, but a delivery driver took it on himself to presume she would!

I have had a similar issue with Asda, on a couple of occasions when I have been shopping with my Daughter, who is 12, if I've had alcohol they've refused to let me purchase it because I "may" be buying it for her

I've argued the toss with the Supervisor and Store Manager but they won't budge. I find their Policy ludicrous, that as a 36 year old Woman if I go shopping with my Daughter I cannot buy alcohol

On the flipside they always ask me for ID in my local shop when buying wine, I can't help that I look under 25 apparently lol.

Well the stupidest thing i ever witnessed was at Morrison's

I was standing in the queue behind a rather doddery old man purchasing a bottle of whiskey

The young girl then proceeded ta ask him for ID

The man look at her and said love im 92 can you not see the fact im over 18

She did actually serve him lol

The country has gone loopy it really has xxx

I just ask to see their ID to make sure they're old enough to sell it, then ask if they've got kids...or younger siblings...or next door neighbours.

I then refuse to buy their booze in case they're selling it on behalf of someone under age.

Tesco love me...

when i lived in the usa in every bar etc they would ask me for id, i was 30, at first it was flattering but soon became a bore, i ended up getting a us driving licence so i could leave my passport at home

Laughs sorry to destroy this one, but spend loads of time in Switzerland and the cig's there are now CHF 7.5 upwards so about £4-6 a pack of 18..and they produce them about 20miles from where I have an appartment in Neuchatel...80% of the money goes to the government and rest is shop and producer...so not all is milk and sunshine in Switzerland..sorry Monster of H.

I'm terrible since I been working in the shop, I am crap at ages and because it's over 25s, even if you know they are 18 you have to id if look to be under 25. As someone else said, if you don't and you get it wrong, you personally get fined and I'm not risking a fine or a caution for the sake of someone being a bit pissed off that they look younger than they are. Most folks are pleased to be told they look younger! My sis has this problem all the time so she carries id with her at all times -- if she doesn't have the id, she doesn't even attempt to get served. An yes if you know the person of age is buying for an underage person, you are to refuse the sale. Buying in a family is different, you went in and the assistant knew you were buying the ciggies for sasha, it wasn't even a guess! It's an awkward age to call. One of the guys I id'd the other day was 37 pmsl He just laughed though, and I think he was quite chuffed It is annoying, but it's not just Tescos, it's the law and they are talking about putting it up to 30, so I'd think about getting a citizens card if you are lucky enough to look younger than 25 No one ever id's me It's no fair

most poeple dont seem to know that its not jst the store that can be fined, but the cashier themself can be fined (iam pretty sure its minium of £2000)and given a criminal record and face the prospect of losing there job to. so as you can see not checking for ID can seriously effect someones life.

i would rather be safe than sorry no matter how much it upsets the customer.

i think Tescos are over the top in implementing the over 25's rule personally though i would be thrilled to bits if they asked for my ID

Tesco doesnt get fined for an underage sale, the salesperson does. Its not worth the £2000 fine risk for £5-6 worth of cigarettes, especially as the profit goes to Tesco and not the sales assistant themselves.

The policy is to ID anyone who looks under the age of 25, this is because it is increasingly difficult to tell someones age in this day and age. Better to be safe than sorry

And she denied the sale to you because you was going to give the cigarettes to someone who couldnt prove her age.
