To move a sofa..

My sister moved into her new house. Sofa fits terribly in the living room. She orders new sofas. I agree to pay the last 6 months payments on her ones and have those. She waits 3 weeks to get a delivery date for her new sofa. I try to organise dumping mine. Can't take vans into local dump. Everyone else wants crazy money to take sofa to othet dump.

Advertise on facebook to give sofa away for free just to get shot. 3 people arguing over it!! Finally agree to give away to a couple.

Get the date for delivery yesterday fir anytime between 9&12 today. I pay a guy £20 to move sisters sofa from hers to mine early this morning.

Her new one arrives at 11.30. Don't fit through the porch door so she's gotta get someone to take her door off then reschedule delivery. And now the women who's having mine has cancelled.

So my sister has no sofas and I have 2 bloody huge ones and can barely move in my living room!!

Dump your old one outside your house, someone will take it usually. That's how i get rid of any bulky items i don't want, leave them outside my house and wait for anyone to knock and ask for them, they end up there about 2 days if that.

oh dear!

had that with a table once, wouldn't go through the doorway so they left it in the hall. Had to take the door shut strips off and it just made it in, had only just painted the frames too

I think they said the sofa would go in with the door off but something about it being a double glazing thing and not being able to get it back on after means they have to get a proper double glazing person to do it which they didn't realise

Ma ex bought a sofa for a flat we were living in, that wouldn't fit through the door due to angles. Swapped it for one which would fit, then moved to a house where we had to take the glass out of the front window to get it in there

Sounds like a nightmare! I got a sofa off freecycle a few years ago and it was a nightmare to move it. If I was closer to you I'd have your old sofa, I'm moving into an unfurnished flat!

The question that I have on the subject is aimed squarely at the manufacturers of Sofa's etc.

I really don't understand why it hasn't occurred to any of them that when these things are bought, they need to be delivered to a customers home and will need to pass through doorways, and so they should take into account the size of the openings that these things are going to need to be passed through.

How annoying, especially as there doesn't appear to be a local collection service. It's so short sighted as it leads to fly tipping and other costs in clearing up (not you but others will just tip).

Treat all the extra furniture as an assault course for your son for now.

we were in a similar situation this week. we got given two lovely cream leather sofas, so arranged for ours to be collected by a local charity, the same day a "man with a van" was moving the new ones

then 30 mins after ours had gone we got a call they couldn't get them out of the other house and would have to take the window out

and it would be 4 days when they could do it

Eventually we get a call to say they were out and on their way with our sofas, having spent 4 days on camping chairs.

so the van pulls up and after 45 mins they decide that they won't fit through the door and the window is too small to do it that way. As they were standing in the yard another van pulls up, its the charity guys with a Singer treadle sewing machine we had bought, they ask what was the problem, we told them they wont fit, to which they replied can we try? and 10 mins later both new sofas were in the living room without any trouble, "man with van" made hasty exit and charity guys got a very nice tip

Your local council may pick it up but you normally have to book a slot....they picked up our old one and they recycle them for people who need them if they are ok.

Ive just looked into that. It's £35. After paying the guy this morning to move the other one ive not got that at the moment.

I know people do it round here sometimes for scrap metal but it's gone within the day. I wouldn't leave bulky furniture outside though.

Each local authority has a different policy and there are different schemes around the country.

Where I am I can phone the council and they will pick up for a fee or phone one of the local waste board's agencies and they will collect it for free and sell it on in one of their charity outlets. Once a year there will be a free local authority collection for the neighbourhood.

Or, I could leave it outside and hope someone takes it away for their own use. White goods go in under an hour (or 3 minutes on the day I paid for something to be taken away and before it was collected). I don't do that as our pavements are too narrow because of the wheelie bins anyway.

My daughter had to take out 6 inches of a doorway to get her new sofas in her living room. We put the old one outside ready to take to the dump and it was gone before the new one was in.

That is the beauty of having French doors fitted never any problems like that, however they don't tend to help if you live on the sixth floor in a block of flats

This what Mr man does for every time. He put it a part completly and puts it in the bin.

Our local council charges £50 for collection. If we live outside and they see us we get a fine. Plus we live on a second floor, so more work going downstairs. C done it so many times with everything we can't manged to get rid of that he does in minutes

Sounds a real pain.

The doorway thing reminds me of a brilliant prank played by Beadle.

A chap delivers a box to an office, carries it in, goes into the inner office for a signature. Whilst he is in there, carpenters add new, thicker, door frame. Chap comes out of office, unhappy as box at wrong office, goes to take box away and try as he might, he can't get it through the doorway he passed through just 2 minutes before...

I specifically have really small sofas because I was scared of not being able to get them in the house. Moved house and now they're nowhere near big enough for the room so look a bit daft, you just can't win!

Was having a new oven fitted. The new one was delivered, they unpacked it on the street as I didn't want them scratching my wood floor. They left it by the gate and went to pull the old one out. By the time they bought the old one out the new cooker had vanished!

Not quickly enough. Ive had 2 people who were gonna have it free already let me down with collection and ive not got room to keep it and keep being messed about. Hence me chopping it up!

my house is fairly new (12 yrs old) - has a huge bathroom door on the downstairs loo for wheelchair users - you should see the size of the patio door (which doubles as a back door- please no smutty comments

) - its so tiny i cant even fit a normal chair through it -

What I don't understand is why sofas are getting larger, while new houses are getting smaller.

I was thinking more about your sister's new one. Our lounge isn't small, but has two doors, a fireplace and a deep bay window meaning there's not much length on any one wall for these large modern sofas.

And I've always loved those corner sofas, but we don't have a corner!!

You can take vans into the local tip

The stop vans because they like to charge businesses for everything

But if you ring you local council they will send you a pass that you can use for one or two drop offs,

Worth a try, easier than trying to get it into a car

That said with van not available a saw a sledge hammer made for a fun half hour dismantling one to put in car recently
