Not lived in NYC or across there for that long. I was in NJ for a couple of months last year though.

If you are in NYC itself, forget about a car for normal use. The subway is terrific (if crowded, just like any other...). Pace yourself seeing the sights, there's plenty of time! I'm more used to big malls and supermarkets to get food, chains like Giant and Whole Foods are excellent. They may not be in the area where you may be staying though. NYC is a tad different to other cities!

Don't forget that using rental cars, buses or trains, that neighbouring cities like Washington, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Boston are actually relatively (for Americans!) close. All are excellent!

By the way, Gunnison Beach in Sandy Hook, NJ is an excellent nudie beach...

Have fun!

Apart from expensive, you should have a good time if you have a job (and visa) that will support you. NYC is BIG so advice would be predicated on where you manage to find an apartment, what you like to do, and where you are working.

my brother lived there for 7 years so i took a lot of free holidays...loved it...so many different neighbourhoods, lovely people, lovely food...if you have the chance to do it,then do it...if you dont like it, you can always leave...midsummers pretty brutal , but so is winter...but i liked the fact you got proper seasons..

Washington Sq, and the Highline are great! Saw a Midsummer Nights Eve being played in the sq. whilst I was there.
