"Legally she should give it back or at the very least pay for half of the cost of she keeps it. But it was a gift " You do not have to give the ring back as it was a gift - well according to the ex-wifes solicitor

"In the UK legally it's classed as a gift so doesn't need returned. In the US though most states class it as something that was only given if the wedding takes place so a broken engagement usually means they don't keep the ring Quite interesting. I have an engagement ring from a fiance who cheated on me. Never worked out what to do with the blasted thing since and that was about 10 yrs ago" thats why i gave the dick his back

"Legally she should give it back or at the very least pay for half of the cost of she keeps it. But it was a gift " In Scotland, as it's a gift, in law she can keep it.

"If an engaged couple split up, who should be entitled to the engagement ring? The woman as it was a gift to her or the man because he bought it?" I thought it was hers to keep as a gift, but if it was a family heirloom I personally would give it back!

"Legally no idea, but morally I guess give it back. I see it not as a gift, but more like a contact. It's not here's a ring and will you marry me? It's if you agree to marry me, I'll give you the ring. Or, if you accept the ring, you agree to marry me." Agree. It's a symbol of the agreement to become engaged and to wed. It's not a gift in my eyes.

That's how I've always thought of it too, and the woman takes it off and throws it at him when they split up. (Though admittedly my only experience is from Holywood films - and some of them aren't totally true to life) Surely keeping it would remind you of someone you wanted to forget? Mr ddc

"If an engaged couple split up, who should be entitled to the engagement ring? The woman as it was a gift to her or the man because he bought it?" Give it to charity if you do not want to keep it at least someone will be happy.

"Legally she should give it back or at the very least pay for half of the cost of she keeps it. But it was a gift But surely not a gift you would want to keep? " Why not? It depends on the circumstances of the split? I kept my engagement and wedding ring, decided to sell my engagement ring (after my ex-husband had remarried), but have my beautiful scottish gold wedding ring still which I haven't quite decided what to do with it... and as scottish gold, its rather a nice investment, so may well keep it and give it to my son when he is older. we aren't together for various reasons, but I still have some of the other gifts he gave me too - like the pyrex dishes he got for my wedding anniversary, or the digital car tyre inflator I got for my first christmas as a mummy.
