So you are going through a break-up, you are both entitled to half of everything.

Would you....

A) Sell everything and split the money

B) Let the other person buy you out

C) Not give a shit and just go

D) Get a saw and cut everything in half and sell your half on ebay.

A guy in Germany, went for D....

If I had monumentally fucked up then I would let him take whatever he wanted.

If it was the other way around, he would have to fight me tooth and nail for it. And I would still win. Money doesn't buy a lot of things, but it does buy resilience and people to work hard on your behalf. He could take whatever was rightfully his, ie clothes etc, but anything else, do one!

I gave him everything except photos, which he can have copies of if he wants. He didn't buy me much when we were together and our jewellery has already been given to the children. We still share the car though as I drive the grandchildren places in it.

okay.... i laughed at half the LP.... but that picture of half a teddy bear.... thats looked menacing...

and the bloke cut up 2 mobile phones.... wouldn't it have been wiser to give her one and keep one......

same with the 4 chairs... just bloody keep 2 and give her 2......

mind you... why is anyone having a rational conversation with someone who cut up half a freaking car!!!!!!!!

C, it's only material items and can be replaced.

I let him have what he wanted and I took what I wanted. We debated some stuff. Everything else I sold on ebay and he got half the profits, after ebay fees.

I even did a spreadsheet to keep track of it all to show him. I didn't want him (or his family more to the point, who never liked me) accusing me of anything!

ideally agree what you'd each retain and how you divvy up the rest but bitterness can make that difficult. Worst is when one side starts removing shared property before any discussion.

another option you could add is sell the lot to a mate for a tenner, get a receipt to show and hand over a fiver as their half, then buy it back off him

If you can't immediately agree then C.

For me the sooner you let go of things the sooner the you get over things and the more cooperative or reasonable the other person starts to behave.

Make an assessment of all stuff. Its value and your desire for it. Then put an offer in and negotiate so that you get close to 50%. Its good to let things go too, so treat it as an opportunity. 50% cash value is a cool outcome, as you start afresh.
