The U.S. has at least 330,000,000 people and, therefore, a certain amount of crime. I think that there are about 9,000 murders a year, mostly black-on-black, and probably involving gangs, drugs, or alcohol. I have already given links to U.S. government crime statistics in a previous post but will not waste my time doing so again because I am certain that no one is interested. Nevertheless, it is a fact that the populations of the murder capitols of the U.S. are mostly minorities, especially black. There really is a difference in crime rates based on demographics of population. This is not my fault. Any mass shootings are very rare compared to ordinary crime but they receive national and international publicity and influence the views of those who simply don't like guns, don't know anything about them, and who assume they know what is best for everyone anyway. I only ask that people be "open-minded" and "tolerant" of "diversity".

What do u class as 'ordinary' crime? Mass shootings of any sort involving the death of our fellow human beings is tragic. God rest their souls. Folk in prayer targeted by some gun worshipping lunatic no doubt.....but hey guns are a necessity in the good old US of A

The NRA say that the solution is more guns and less gun control; is that your position?

I cannot remember a situation when a member of Jo public in the USA stopped a mass shooting by shooting the maniac shooter. We have 63,000,000 people in the UK but far less mass shootings (Cumbria, Dunblane and Hungerford, come to mind) so our gun control works.

'Open minded and tolerant' of a system needing greater control and common sense application which where it any other issue not being distorted by the NRA etc and the green influence..?

because the majority of people are black or minorities does not alter the fact that the system is partly responsible for these deaths..

be a bit too late when the leafy suburbs or gated communities realise its out of control..

Any Abykilling by any person by any means is wrong. It doesn't matter if the population is 2 or 2,000,000 and it doesn't matter what the demographics of that population is made up of.

Makes no difference if guns are legal or not,if an individual is he'll bent on doing something like this they will get a gun, will they care if it's legal to do so?

But apart from that why are the Americans so hell bent on owning guns anyway? How many buffalo do you see wandering around the parks of American towns and cities?

One reason Americans own guns is to protect themselves from a violent totalitarian government.

Just arm everyone. Anyone over 12 gets a free hand gun that would solve The problem they can then just kill each other at will. More people with more guns is clearly the solution anyone can see that! That's why trained professionals like the police don't get shot dead in restaurants without warning.

i think for you the truely understand the impact of what happened last night.... the one thing I would ask people to do is not to relate this to other gun crime is general... for several reasons....

1) this involves people involved in bible study in a church.... he walks in and knelt with them.. he shot them down but spare one person, so they could tell people what he did...

2) you have to know and understand the history behind this church in particular...

you are talking about a church that has basically been there since the beginning of the US, it was the oldest black church in the south.... if you know anything bout the civil rights movement, then you know about this church...

the person was cold blooded.. and probably the impact of what he was doing, and where he was doing it....

If he, they didn't have a gun could they just walk in there and murder several people?

Everyone gets mad, angry or over reacts at some point, most on some reflection don't go out and kill anyone. However being able to deal instant death to others in the heat of the moment is rather easy, especially if you have a gun and ofcourse a determined individual may do this anyway but not on such a scale in such a small amount of time. This could be anyone anywhere especially in the USA, which even with it's large population seems too have a disproportionate amount of gun crime.

the person who talked about instant death.. and heat of the moment made an interesting point...

problem is........ absolutely nothing do with this shooting....

the person who did this it is now being said sat with this group for bible study in the church for an hour before he did it...

it is now being said this person reloaded their gun 5 times whilst they did it....

the story gets sadder and more chilling... and i hope people actually have their facts straight on this case... before they start talking generally......

So, everyone hates guns, everyone blames guns.

Guns aren't the problem, people are.

The point about our gun controls working is deeply flawed as the restrictions only cam into place after the examples of mass shootings that were given and we have considerably fewer handguns than the US so it was easier to get them out of the hands of law abiding owners (which I was one of).

There's a state in the US where the head of each household is legally obliged to own a handgun and that state has the lowest crime figures in the whole of America yet Detroit has the strictest gun control laws and the worst crime statistics.

let me raise this up a level and take it out of "gun land"........

apparently... this is now being investigated as a federal case.... which means that if they find a link between the guy named and any of the "hate crime groups"... they are going to treat it as "domestic terrorism".....

basically what you are going to have in effect.. is for this case to be treated in the same way as the "boston bombings".......

i hate that this conversation has turned into a general "gun laws" debate.... when this case is actually something that could turn out to be as far away for it as could be.....

most people are savvy enough to know it takes someone to pull the trigger be that negligently or deliberately as in this case..

too soon to say what if any the circumstances are with the ownership etc that this guy had, happened before and will happen again that where you have a system as lax as it is in some states within America that hindsight will be mentioned as a possible preventative..

when children are killing children by accident or when some misunderstood youth guns down kids at school etc then there are issues that need addressing across many area's of the current legislation..

thats what is bollocks..

wouldn't matter if it they are looking at it and trialed as a federal case... and they could ask for the death penalty or life without parole.....

but yes... south carolina does have the death penalty, however no one has been executed by the state for almost 5 years...

i think the fight is going to be if the state get to prosecute him, or the government....

I've long said that the biggest issue with Americans and guns is how they store them. Loaded and in a drawer is not safe storage.

All rifles are barrel off and bolt out, stored in seperate safes. The magazine's are also separate and so is the ammunition.

It's fun when it comes to inspection time, the poor fellas here for ages!
