How often do you, or your manservant etc, clean your car? Or daren't you, as the cladding is holding it together? Is there a link to cleanliness and driving standard?

I see some fairly aged cars, in good condition, often far below the speed limit, always clean but perhaps just driven to pick up pension, bits and pieces, with little awareness of what happens between A and B, as its point and shoot propulsion.

I wash it when it looks a mess. I clean the windscreen in between washes if it's got too many dead flies on. The rain also washes it off...

My car is a tip. The kids leave stuff in it and to be fair I clean it but it never lasts long.

I'm rubbish at parking so maybe there is a link

To me that's a proper wash.

Clean the wheels with non-acid/PH neutral wheel cleaner (or fallout remover if they're really dirty).

Clean the tyres.

Pre-wash the wheel arches with citrus pre-wash.

Pre-wash the entire car with PH Neutral snow foam and leave to dwell for around 20 mins.

While the foam is dwelling clean the badges, trim and window seals with a pig bristle detailing brush.

Rinse snow foam.

2 bucket wash with grit guards in each bucket and a lambs wool wash mitt (PH Neutral shampoo made from banana & coconut).

Rinse.

Dry the car.

Spray car with tar & glue remover.

Rinse and dry.

Spray the car with fallout remover.

Rinse the car.

Decontaminate the paint using a clay bar.

Give the car another two bucket wash, rinse and dry.

Apply either a glaze or polish (totally different processes)

Apply natural carnauba wax.

Apply gloss enhancer.

Seal the wheels.

Dress the tyres.

Dress exterior trim/plastics.

Clean exterior glass.

Apply exterior glass sealant.

Polish and seal the exhaust tips.

What's wrong with a sponge ? "

They trap dirt/grit between the surface of the sponge and the surface of the car and cause what's known as swirl marks.

Most cars you see will have them, look at the car in direct sunlight and you'll see light circular scratches. That's what sponges do to cars, even worse are those garage forecourt handwashes that charge £5 for a wash. They use a chemical called TFR (Traffic Film Remover) to essentially strip the dirt, when used correctly it's fine to use occasionally but these places use it neat (it should be diluted to the correct ratio). It causes acid etching to the cars paint, covers the plastics in marks, damages the glass, damages the lacquer on wheels and corroded badges and chrome trim.

These places may be cheap and your car might look ok for a while but it causes serious damage that will affect your resale value. It also speeds up corrosion.

My pension paid straight into bank these days..;)

BTW I take it to be cleaned by the Poles (not clean myself)but may give it a shoosh with the Karcher over the weekend

A full 30hr+ detail is mostly for show cars or high end vehicles, I only do a couple a month and fit them around my 'proper' job which, thankfully affords me the opportunity to do so.

Lambs wool mitts have a very deep pile and the dirt/grit is drawn into them and away from the bodywork. Pre-washing and using the 2 bucket method further reduces the risks of causing scratches.

I can say that it greatly depends on the vehicle size and what package is requested as I charge an hourly rate + products used (Ibhave some waxes that cost over £800 a pot and a Modesta glass coating that costs £3k per coat)

No, it's a glass coating for the entire car!

Basically the car has to be properly prepared and decontaminated (all environmental particles that are bonded to the car are removed), the car is then polished in at least 3-stages and sometimes wet sanded to remove all defects. The glass coating is then applied and cured for 24hrs.

It's a highly reflective and VERY hard coating that is scratch resistant and also hydrophobic.

It's a treatment for very high-end vehicles and only sold to detailers, you or your average valeted couldn't buy it from Modesta or any of their registered stockists.

I can also do a safe wash which takes about an hour...

I've had my new car a month or so now. It's white, and looked mucky when we came back from the races a few weeks ago. Took it through tesco car wash. Was a trippy experience!
