"www.express.co.uk/news/uk/584338/WaterWorld-Stoke-on-Trent-Muslim-Islam-waterpark-women-only-bikini-ban-clothing-veil-burqa WaterWorld in Stoke-on-Trent plans to black out windows and provide a prayer room during a women-only night aimed at Muslims. Only female lifeguards will patrol the park during the event , which has triggered a flood of complaints. Staff will also "guard" the front entrance to "make sure that no males enter the facility"." The park clearly believes it might be a commercially successful event. I don't see an issue with it.

"If I wanted to go swimming on that night I could go earlier in the day. I could go later in the day. I could go to another pool. I could go in Muslim friendly swimwear. Either way it's two hours or so dedicated to allow another culture to get out the house and enjoy themselves. Hardly the end of the world. My local pool offers nights for the elderly and nights for nudists. This does not seem to offend. " And rightly so.

There is high racial tension. It could be seen as inflammatory. I am aware of a group of people that are planning a protest on the evening in question. The potential for a kick off is genuine. Hope they do go ahead and have a lovely night.

"If there's a demand for it? Why not? If it's just a PC publicity exercise and nobody goes then it's a waste of time/money. Many pools close for specific groups at certain times - disabled, schools, families, specific disadvanted groips for free sessions - hell, even nudists. I don't see an issue if it's actually utilised. A"

Of course a sensational headline suggesting a ban on bikinis isn't about a private group renting somewhere and getting on with their lives.

The issue appears easy to understand: don't be a Muslim and do anything that anyone could object to even when it affects them not a jot.

"Wasn't there a similar thing at a theme park a few months ago? Like crystalwheels said: a non story. " Legoland. It was hired privately by a muslim group and the EDL worked themselves up in to a right state that they couldn't attend on a day it was never going to be open to the public anyway

"But wasn't the Birnminghams star city complex suddently allocated to Muslims one evening without informing the general public?,people turned up to play their usual weekly game of ten pin bowling or to go to cinema and the nights entertainment was spoiled for them?. That was certainly a non-event for them that evening!." 20 seconds of google says no. There's nothing in it. “Star City is a family entertainment centre open to and enjoyed by all. Star City has enjoyed growing success in recent months and we have a proud record of community involvement. Over the past few days Star City has been extremely busy and the volume of traffic has been very high, causing significant traffic congestion and delays in getting some visitors access into the Centre. During the busiest times some visitors have been turned away and there has been some disappointment for some, for which we apologise. However, there is simply no truth in the recent allegations – the nature of which have no place at Star City.” Although the statement doesn’t mention Eid, this was obviously a major contributory factor to Star City being very busy last week. It is hardly surprising that the festival should result in large numbers of Muslim families visiting the entertainment complex – according to the 2011 census, 21.8% of the population of Birmingham is Muslim, while Star City itself is situated in the Nechells area of the city, where 43.5% of the population is Muslim. Presumably what happened at the Vue cinema was that tickets sold out and disappointed visitors were told they were unable to get a seat because of Eid, which they took to mean that only Muslims were allowed in.

"Seen a few quotes, but nothing that I'd put much store in. I guess it comes down to what you want to believe. " The only article I bothered to read was The Mirror and that was full of fa;se outrage and cliched quotes. I suspect that the reality is somewhere between those interviews and the Star City statement and most likely as you have already stated people being told it's full because of Eid being misinterpreted.

"Bottom line is commercial enterprises will do whatever they can to increase their profits. So while over 95% of the population allow less than 5% of the population to dictate 'the moral standards' that those commercial enterprises have to conform to to get the business of less than 5% then they will keep conforming. However if the 95%+ of the population that does not subscribe to those 'moral standards' decide to boycott all commercial enterprises that do pander to the minority then stories like this will disappear as businesses realize that by catering for less than 5% of the population costs them over 95% of their potential market. Think of the student boycott of Barclays Bank in the 70's when they were investing in SA, and if you dont like what been done organize a boycott." How are moral standards being dictated to by anyone?

"It's been reported in various different newspapers. I don't know why this particular event has garnered more news than others. There are a lot of reports of different pro Muslim events in the area all of the time. Of course those reports are the ones that will make the news because it sells newspapers. And they will be skewed into anti everything else. The only thing that I find odd about the pool story is that they say it's open to any women but the dress has to be Muslim friendly. If it is open to all religions I don't get why they have said that. " its a legal requirement.

What has the fact that you don't pay council tax got to do with anything ? I was simply saying that I suspect most of the Muslims who choose to use this facility are normal law abiding citizens, who are part of the community. I don't see an issue allowing them to fully enjoy the facilities, even if it means making some special arrangements for their cultural needs.

As far as I am aware laws in Islamic states do have such laws but no Muslim is bound by those laws if they do not reside there. They do so in this country on religious grounds not legal.
