Branded goods vs supermarket own label?

Jump to newest

Went shopping earlier - had to get some baked beans and always have to get Heinz, other brands just don't taste as good!

But when it comes to brown sauce I opt for the cheap supermarket 'value' brand at a fraction of the cost and it's still really tasty.

What are the named brands you simply can't go without and what 'own label' goods would you recommend to your fellow Fabbers?

I honestly can't think of a single thing where I am a brand snob. .... apart from I have to buy parazone toilet bleach as it is the only product that seems to do anything. Other than that I buy what is on offer mostly.

Own brand pasta, rice, noodles, anything plain like that that you add your own flavour and ingredients to.

Bread, but not the out of date/stale stuff. Cakes. Anything bakery seems alright.

I did some work in a meat processing plant (I sold them some new hardware and software) and they was taking meat from cow carcasses and cutting them and labelling, half the meat went to Asda smart price and half went to Waitrose Premium.

Label's should mean nothing on food. Chances are they're all made in the same factory

"hellmans mayo and HP sauce."

So true!

Sainsburys basic tuna in spring water is as good as any better than most. Though not cheaper if multi packs are on offer.

I don't care too much but largely buy PG tips when on offer, or Tetleys tea, though used to do home brand tea. I like offers full stop.

"hellmans mayo and HP sauce. everything else can be anything"

Agree with the HP although I'm sure it used to be tangier yesteryear, but Lidl's 'Vita D'or' mayonnaise is very good & about one third of the Hellmans price.

Likewise Lidl organic tomato ketchup is very good - yet only one third of the Heinz price.

Pop.....cant stand cheap cola or orange drinks!!

Although I actually prefer cheaper lemonade as the brand ones are too sweet but I don't drink.that too often.

Heinz ketchup....anything else is too vinegary.

Other than that I'll eat anything lol

Mayo is the main one. I was a brand snob until I was convinced to use Aldi. Now I do most of my shopping there and only top up at Sainsburys

I used to buy Hellman's light mayo and wouldn't have anything else... Until i tried Aldi's Bramwell extra light mayo... I prefere that.

I used to do a bit of agency work years ago..

I was working at a dairy & they were bottling for one company then a bell would go off & they would just change the labels in the machines & bottle for someone else!!

Despite recent "assurances" if those pies contain lamb or beef then I'm a monkey's uncle

Not much really as we tend to try new things out and go with what we like regardless of brand. Not strictly true actually OP, anything other than HP or Daddies for brown sauce is a sin.

Away with the fairies (Liverpool to you)

We have to get Fairy washing powder because Mr has bad eczema and anything else will set him off - I know this to be true because occasionally I try lenor fabric conditioner (I love the smell) and I watch him itch and scratch for a day or two before I give the rest of it to my mum

Had a cousin & she worked for an importer they went down the docks to the boat & allocated batches of tins to be shipped off to be labeled for different companies!!

Have look at some of the products you buy & they say made for this company or that company..

I agree with this. Non branded bleach isn't worth buying. Domestos or Parazone do the trick!

I have most of my groceries delivered (from ASDA). Every so often they substitute an own brand for something allegedly out of stock - presumably in an attempt to get you to like it.
