I am starting on my diet as of Monday again. Last time I lost five stone, and the way I did that was quite simply to write down everything you eat.

Be true to yourself even if its a biscuit write it down.

But out the brad to four slices a day and eat three square meals. Don't not eat breakfast its an important meal.

And trust in yourself, after all, you can do this. Just as I have to do it.

And good luck Lass!

Peace

Si

I started my new lifestyle..not a diet because they are temporary..in sept 2010 when after a whole lifetime of being hugely overweight since my childhood I'd reached 29st 12lb and I thought this is it..now is the time.

Well within two years I'd lost 17st 2lb and gone from a 52inch waist to a 34 inch waist.

Life is obviously immeasurably better even though I wouldnt say I was unhappy as such before as its not really me to be that way.

Whenever people ask me about losing weight theres three things I always advise them to do..

Get a notebook or any other way of keeping tabs and weight yourself on the same day every week with no exceptions. It's very motivating to see your progress there in front of you and I chose Sunday mornings thinking that I wouldnt blow it all away on a Friday or Saturday night after making the effort all week.I always set myself realistic targets..in October I'd look to be at a certain point by Christmas etc.

In my experience theres no point in eating a diet that you can't live on for the rest of your life. ..are you really gonna live on lettuce and rice cakes forever?? Just eat normal size healthy meals..cut out the fat etc and everyone knows what's good and what isn't..

And finally for me personally but I think it's a lot of peoples undoing..I never rely on anyone else when it comes to exercise. .no gym buddies to ring up and they give you a lame excuse so you excuse yourself and say I won't today either.

Maybe some people can't motivate themselves to do it alone but if you don't think your worth getting up and going for it for on a wet damp morning then your probably not ready in your own head quite yet.

I'm totally convinced that is the biggest factor of all. If the mind isn't there the body won't follow.

Good luck to anyone out there who goes for it...I wish you the happiness success will bring!

I dont believe diets work but wish you the best of luck.

I looked up pineapple for its calorific content. Mainly because people are often mislead about fruit not being fattening.

apparently there are 28kcals in a half inch slice of fresh pineapple. Tinned there will be many more. You need to walk at pace till your heart rate is raised for 7 mins to burn that one slice off.

sorry i dont agree, but horses for courses. If you have been leading a sedentry life and eating lots of fats and sugars then dieting just makes the body think there is a famine and it holds on to fat reserves. using only glycogen as a source of energy. when the glycogen runs out people get dizzy and light headed. If you consume 2000kcals and only burn 1800 you are going to put weight on.

oh my lord. please point to where you think i have been disparaging. I wished her luck. And offered some sensible information which she can look into or ignore as is her want. Encouraging someone to add more physical activity alongside their diet is advice you would get from anyone who knew anything about fitness and weight loss.

Of course there's more calories in pineapple than nothing. But if the alternative is chips, then it's a better choice. Finding a diet or a way of eating you can stick to is surely all about finding alternatives that you like to eat which are healthier.

I've been eating plenty of fruit as part of my diet and I'm doing just fine and feeling good on it. Yes fruit contains a high level of sugar, but it also contains fibre and vitamins and good stuff and if it helps me not want to eat a bar of dairy milk because sometimes you just want something sweet, than that's great.

I dont really follow your way of thinking. The only alternative to chips is pineapple. hmmm ok. Of course if you went out and did an hours hill walk you could eat some chips. Tho it would be preferable to have maybe veg such as parsnip, carrot, sweet potato, onion peppers, tomato, fennel, celeriac lightly coated in olive oil and roasted.

If I was given a choice between crisps and pineapple, I would pick pineapple every time. Yum.

As for diets not working, I've lost three stone since Christmas, and it didn't just melt off! So they do work, sometimes.

What I'm saying is that no, of course that's not the only alternative, but it's if it's a quick and easy alternative that the person dieting likes then it's ok.

It's all very well 'tweaking your macros' and that kind of stuff if you only need to lose 4lbs or something but if you have a large amount of weight to lose (not saying the OP does, referring to myself here) then you need simple easy choices which you enjoy. I'd pick a few chunks of pineapple over pissing around roasting celeriac etc if I wanted a snack, and it would be absolutely fine and do me no damage.

And I find the "x amount of exercise burns of x" logic quite dangerous too. Losing weight is about 80% diet, 20% exercise and it's easy to slip into thinking because you've been on a hike you can eat whatever you want. It also reinforces the food=reward mentality which many people with emotional issues around food (again, about me, not directed at the OP) struggle to break as a cycle.

rubbish- she said "And I find the "x amount of exercise burns of x" logic quite dangerous too.". it's basic physics - of course exercise burns calories. you have to be aware of your input and output and make sure they're imbalanced to lose weight.

You appear to be deliberately misreading pretty much everything I've written so I'll leave you to dispensing your scientific and nutrition advice.

Because as everyone who has ever struggled with their weight knows, it's not that simple because it's about motivation and emotional state too.

Tho it would be preferable to have maybe veg such as parsnip, carrot, sweet potato, onion peppers, tomato, fennel, celeriac lightly coated in olive oil and roasted.

Good post . I don't ever eat back my exercise calories, because I reckon that's a slippery slope back to putting weight back on. Now I just need to work out what food to eat to get my boobs back

Oh no you cant do snacking ffs ! you gotta knock that on the head lol. The main reason people snack is because they dont have the right diets to begin with and there is a lack of self control. I have a lot of good sound proven non fad info to share but i get shot down on these threads all the time. At no point was i critical of the OP's effort. There are a lot of lies out there about what is healthy etc, smoothys being a case in point where people thought they would be healthy then discovered they had gained 8 pounds and their teeth were rotting.

lol i get what you mean about roasting celeriac etc as a snack.I honestly believe if you eat the right foods at the right time of day then you probably dont need to snack. Although you may have earned a treat

If you get peckish between meals it may well be dehydration and not hunger. Your desire for food is regulated by a part of the brain called the appestat. Unfortunatly it also regulates thirst so if you are dehydrated you may think you are hungry. You can try sipping a glass of water over 30 mins and see if the hunger subsides.

how is being aware of your metabolic rate dangerous? eat less, move more - it's simple.

You appear to be deliberately misreading pretty much everything I've written so I'll leave you to dispensing your scientific and nutrition advice.

Because as everyone who has ever struggled with their weight knows, it's not that simple because it's about motivation and emotional state too."

sounds like you're excusing your obesity as a mental condition. if you want to be overweight, that's fine but you shouldn't make excuses for it or say basic disciplines with understanding food intake is dangerous logic.

rubbish- she said "And I find the "x amount of exercise burns of x" logic quite dangerous too.". it's basic physics - of course exercise burns calories. you have to be aware of your input and output and make sure they're imbalanced to lose weight. "

And the bit I said after that? About how it reinforces treating food as a reward? It is a dangerous logic for someone who struggles with their weight because it leads to thinking "I've done that hill walk so I can eat 42.5 chips exactly" instead of listening to their body and eating what they're actually hungry for. People and their motivations around food are so much more complex than x+y=z because of the thinking and the mental factors which come into it.

It's more about the way you presented your initial advice, as if the OP was stupid. If you wanted to be helpful maybe you could have suggested fruits with a lower GI. You don't just have to pat everyone on the back and say well done but you don't have to patronise either.

Simple general statements:

(not intended to argue with anyone's circumstances)

1 - "you can't outrun a bad diet" meaning that exercise isn't going to counteract too many bad food choices.

2 - health is important. A good diet is more than just weight. The more good food choices you make thr better.

3 - exercise helps improve metabolic rate, muscle density, muscle tone, muscle efficiency and pumps all sorts of good stuff around your body. Exercise is more than fat burning, but the right exercise will actively have your body burning more calories for literally days after exercise and help pull things in tighter and help make a better shape.

4 - If you can move a bit more and keep making a few more good food choices you'll look and feel better. And no preaching needed.

I'm not making excuses for it. Which is why I've lost 3 of the 6 stone I need to lose this year.

What I do know is that the reason why I and a lot of other people have problems with my weight is that there is a strong emotional connection with food and the thinking around it is warped, and sometimes THAT is what needs to be fixed. How is that making excuses? I'm not a fucking idiot, I know if I sit and stuff my face with crisps I'll put on weight. What makes me want to sit and stuff my face with crisps despite being an educated woman who knows that? Sometimes, it's because of feeling upset or stressed or out of control and using food as a crutch.

you're adding additional information to your initial points to change the tone. you did initially say measuring calories burned and using it as a gauge for input is "dangerous", and that the easy option in terms of food is suitable as you can be bothered. you're clearly overweight for a reason.

It also reinforces the food=reward mentality which many people with emotional issues around food (again, about me, not directed at the OP) struggle to break as a cycle.

how is being aware of your metabolic rate dangerous? eat less, move more - it's simple.

she didnt say an awareness of it is dangerous. read it again.

rubbish- she said "And I find the "x amount of exercise burns of x" logic quite dangerous too.". it's basic physics - of course exercise burns calories. you have to be aware of your input and output and make sure they're imbalanced to lose weight.

You don't just have to pat everyone on the back and say well done but you don't have to patronise either.

again, rubbish. You will not lose weight if you don't measure inputs. if an overweight person listens to their body, they'll always be overweight.

Where did I say don't measure inputs? The reason I'm saying that the 42.5 chips concept can be dangerous is because they might only feel like eating 10 chips and then actually they'd be full. But sometimes the logic of an obese person is I've done the work for 42.5 chips so I'm going to eat 42.5 chips even if I don't want them.

you're adding additional information to your initial points to change the tone. you did initially say measuring calories burned and using it as a gauge for input is "dangerous", and that the easy option in terms of food is suitable as you can be bothered. you're clearly overweight for a reason."

"And this is why I prefer the Fab forums to the My Fitness Pal forums. Nothing gets people more irate than diet and fitness advice.

I'm always open to diet and fitness advice, it's being patronised and talked down to I dislike, which is probably why I shouldn't come on these threads at all!

Everyone is different, which is why no-one can tell another how they should lose weight.

I couldn't give the tiniest mouse fart what someone else thinks of my diet. As long as my doctor is happy and it works, that's all I need."

Exactly.

No I'm adding additional information, it's called explaining, because I have clearly been misinterpreted.

However thanks for your helpful advice. I stick by the statement that thinking about what you're "allowed" to eat in terms of how much exercise you've done can be dangerous for an obese person. It reinforces fucked up relationships with food - which I'm sure you'll just dismiss as "excuses" too.

Of course I'm obese for a reason, and it's taken finding out what those reasons are for ME to get tackling them and losing weight.

I thought nearly 3 stone in 6 months was a decent achievement but apparently I'm making excuses for my obesity.

she is not saying she is proud of being overweight, she is proud of a great achievement losing it, and rightly so.

For some losing weight is not hard but for others it is as it is so much more that the basic eat less, move more.

I know you are going to try and argue with me on this matter. from my own ongoing struggle and others i have seen i sand by my comments. Yes essentially eat less, move more works however for some there are emotional and mental attachments to food that need to be explored and overcome.

I do more exercise now than i ever have done but have lost little weight due to my mental attachment to food which i am trying to work through.but there is little support in that area for the obese. If the NHS truely wanted to help reduce the obesety crisis they would look at providing similar help to those with anorexia or bulemia. It is as unhelathy to eat yourself to 40 stone (not my weight BTW!) as it is to starve yourself to 4 stone but people readily accept the latter as a mental health issue but not the former.

i havent read all of the posts on here because quite frankly they will annoy me but i just have to ask....why do you feel you have to exclude yourself from your family to eat healthy? that will always make you feel as if you are punishing yourself.

as i said in my previous post i have many issues with food and so i probably dont come across as the sort of person who should be giving advice on this but the thing is...i know most of the theory, its just applying it i have issues with lol

"Tbh I'm doing slimming world atm and it's not been too bad. And as for fitness advice and tips I always welcome them. However when I said that on a different post I was told the only tip I need is to stop eating you fat fucker. So hopefully no repeat of that "

Its a complicated world with lots of fads and theorys. I looked through many and found mountains of contradictory advice. I then found a book by Sir Ranulph Fiennes the explorer and extreme endurance eventer. He is in his 70's and has had a lifetime of fitness training and knowledge at the highest levels.I used his book for 2 years, became very fit and did fitness instruction at college. I had all the industry standard text books for that. When it came down to it all i ever needed was Fiennes book called "fit for life" i would recommend it to anyone wanting to become fitter and healthier in a sustainable long term way. Hope it helps you mate and good luck

"If I was given a choice between crisps and pineapple, I would pick pineapple every time. Yum.

As for diets not working, I've lost three stone since Christmas, and it didn't just melt off! So they do work, sometimes. "

I dont believe dieting alone does work no.You state here that your diet works but you fail to mention that you also exercise. This is my point. Diets in isolation do not work long term. A combination of exercise and food control does work.

Of course diet alone can work however being sedentary is not conducive with regards to maintaining a healthy body/mind . Improving blood flow, muscle density , bone density, hormone production and flexibility are beneficial consequences of moderate varied excercise

I carefully use the word moderate , even light, excessive excercise sadly is not as wholesome as promoted and for health and longevity I'd advise against regular intense over working x

I take my hat off to anyone who decides to take control rather than bleat about it, be it with weight, smoking or whatever.

However ladies, having done all that hard work and achieving the weight you want, please be prepared to be called a skinny cow by those who haven't.

"Of course there's more calories in pineapple than nothing. But if the alternative is chips, then it's a better choice. Finding a diet or a way of eating you can stick to is surely all about finding alternatives that you like to eat which are healthier.

I've been eating plenty of fruit as part of my diet and I'm doing just fine and feeling good on it. Yes fruit contains a high level of sugar, but it also contains fibre and vitamins and good stuff and if it helps me not want to eat a bar of dairy milk because sometimes you just want something sweet, than that's great."

I HAVE to have my chocolate fix every day - so I buy those Freddo bars for little kids and have one of those each day!

"I dont believe diets work but wish you the best of luck.

I looked up pineapple for its calorific content. Mainly because people are often mislead about fruit not being fattening.

apparently there are 28kcals in a half inch slice of fresh pineapple. Tinned there will be many more. You need to walk at pace till your heart rate is raised for 7 mins to burn that one slice off.Well its all about calories in the end a woman needs 2000 aday and to lose go under by minus 700.

sorry i dont agree, but horses for courses. If you have been leading a sedentry life and eating lots of fats and sugars then dieting just makes the body think there is a famine and it holds on to fat reserves. using only glycogen as a source of energy. when the glycogen runs out people get dizzy and light headed. If you consume 2000kcals and only burn 1800 you are going to put weight on."

And as well its down to the carbs mostly, by limiting your carbs to below 100g aday you will see a big difference.

Confession time!

Just had a really big poo (that's not the confession!)

Right - does anyone else - particularly ladies on a diet - feel tempted to weigh themselves straight after a poo - or look at it and wonder how much lighter you might be afterwards? - or am I just a weird freak??

(I'm a weird freak aren't I? )

Kent

Lost 4 stone since September. Haven't counted a single calorie or tracked my macros. Can't be arsed with all that bollocks. And yes I eat plenty! In fact people don't believe it when I tell them how much I eat in a day. It's WHAT I eat that's made all the difference for me. And the exercise I do.

is there any need?? the lady is making efforts to change, whether you agree with the method or not, i see no reason other than spite to be so disparraging.

oh my lord. please point to where you think i have been disparaging. I wished her luck. And offered some sensible information which she can look into or ignore as is her want. Encouraging someone to add more physical activity alongside their diet is advice you would get from anyone who knew anything about fitness and weight loss."

Well - I lost my 3stone fifteen years ago and kept it off! Clearly my v small chocolate bar each day isn't doing me too much harm. There's a saying - a little bit of what you fancy does you good! (Erm - unless you fancy poisonous substances - then it does you bad! )
