Don't be nude on Mount Kinabalu

"Authorities in Malaysia have arrested a foreign national for allegedly posing naked for pictures on the country’s highest peak, Mount Kinabalu, an act some Malaysians have said angered the spirits of the mountain and caused an earthquake."

(Source:- http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/09/foreigner-arrested-malaysians-blame-nude-mountain-pictures-for-earthquake?CMP=soc_567)

I know other countries and religions have their own beliefs, which I am not mocking, but this is reminding me of the whole Gay weather thing.

Or a case of sound scientific reasoning. Nudity on a mountain, however disrespectful to the locals, doesn't cause earthquakes.

No sympathy for her whatsoever. Deserves all she gets.

A result of the self absorbed, self obsessed generation being told that they can do anything and everything they wish to, simply because THEY are special.

Without a thought for society's norms.

On a flip side....what would it look like if some foreign tourist goes to Stonehenge, gets butt naked, takes tonnes of naked selfies...and even takes a bigger piss by pissing on the stones,it would be a national rage for all I know. Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

If you have a belief that bad things will happen to your world if the mountain/idol/flag/whatever is disrespected and then a bad thing happens to your world, including the deaths of several people, it's hard to shake that belief.

Disrespect was shown, the earth quaked, people died and others lost their homes.

I know correlation is not the same as cause and effect.

The punishment should be for the breach of the rules. The learning should be to find out about where you are going and appreciate their rules and customs. I despair at the young (and not so young) who feel that they are entitled to do whatever they want when abroad.

Yes, it was stupid and disrespectful and they deserve to be punished but that doesn't change the fact that nudity doesn't cause earthquakes, which has always been the point I've been trying to make.

Why has this made the news? Is there nothing more important to devote the time too?

After all what is the story?

A group of STUPID westerners went to an Islamic country known to have very harsh laws including sharia courts and prisons (Brits executed for drug trafficking) and strip off on the side of a 'holy mountain' and publish photos on line while still in country get arrested!

A story not worth the news print.

Yet it made the front pages of some newspapers and the guilty plea has made the news. Whatever westerners do it newsworthy when others try to stop them doing something.

..errr mmm yes like I said if it was something reasonable!.

I think imprisoning somebody for topless pictures for fear of earthquakes from gods is a little unreasonable!.

Massai tribes spit and curse on newborns for fear of cursing them with praise from the gods... That don't mean I want my baby spat on while visiting, because as more educated people we should point out the stupidity of believing that!.

There's plenty of things we can learn from the massai and plenty of things they can learn from us!

They were charged with public indecency not with causing a quake. The law and the mythology are getting very confused on here.

The sentence of three days was for public indecency. We have a naked rambler in jail for over 6 years for the same and repeatedly breaching the ASBO he has on public decency.

Everything we know about science from time immemorial has been disproved. We no longer believe that the world is flat and have moved on from barber surgeons but as far as creationism and the Big Bang theory goes, the jury is still out. Mountain gods are just as relevant. The arrogance in believing that ones own belief system is the only one that fits the facts (especially when not all the facts are known) is dangerous. Quantum theories cannot be proven which is why they are that, Merely theories. Einstein believed that nothing can move faster than the speed of light. This has already been disproven. As yet, nobody has scientifically disproven the existence of a higher power so I am sticking with the mountain gods.

"They were charged with public indecency not with causing a quake. The law and the mythology are getting very confused on here.

The sentence of three days was for public indecency. We have a naked rambler in jail for over 6 years for the same and repeatedly breaching the ASBO he has on public decency.

.

Ahh so do they arrest every woman topless on a beach?.

I've personally never been in favour of jailing the naked rambler...I cannot for the life of me see what is offensive about a naked person

A beach designated for topless bathing may well exist there for all I know. Even our public decency test isn't consistent. Where and when has a bearing. But you know that.

.

So top of a mountain surrounded by no one but friends is indecency but on a beach with thousands is fine!.

by George you've got it "

Hardly. For the people of that country it's a very important and sacred place, if you agree with it or not you have to show some respect for others beliefs and values. Don't forget it was put on social media. When in Rome and all that.

A mountain held sacred where the worst offence they had recorded before this was people leaving litter.

You want to argue this, fine, but I see nothing wrong with a country enforcing it's public decency laws and haven't got the life to bother giving your outrage at this any more time.

My point is that they were not arrested for causing an earthquake, whatever the headlines say.

"

.

My outrage knows no bounds.

I like the way you like to correct me but then jib out when asked the difficult questions.

How many get attested for being topless on a beach and do the get three days imprison.

If the answer is loads... Check my first answer on the post... I'm fine with it (it's stupid but it's their stupid country to be stupid with).

I suspect they trumped up the indecency charges as there'd have found it ridiculously hard to have charged her with causing earthquakes!

I don't know, but I do seem to remember that radical Islamist's used a similar incident as justification for bombing a Bali bar and killing over 200.

Now I know that Bali is one of the Indonesian Islands and this happened in Malaysia, but they are both part of the same island group and they all share the same basic culture. But I guess Brits being convicted of indecency in a place where there are willing to kill 200 for drinking alcohol and wearing immodest clothing by stripping on one of their sacred mountains is something we and our news media should be making a fuss about, it's not like they could provoke a backlash that could get innocents killed...

Science doesn't work like that...

Firstly you get a plausible theory the that fits with the facts.

Then you try and disprove your theory with science, the more you can't disprove it, the more it's given merit.

So let's take the facts.

1 earthquakes happened long before humans were on earth! That kinda ruins the argument straight off

2 scientific measurements show that tectonic plates shift causing mountains to be formed and tremors to be felt from the energy released from there movement!.

Yes that mountain is there from earthquakes and plate shifting... No gods needed just physics

Wikipedia.

Many scientists and philosophers of science have described evolution as fact and theory, a phrase which was used as the title of an article by paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould in 1981. He describes fact in science as meaning data, not absolute certainty but "confirmed to such a degree that it would be perverse to withhold provisional assent." A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of such facts. The facts of evolution come from observational evidence of current processes, from imperfections in organisms recording historical common descent, and from transitions in the fossil record. Theories of evolution provide a provisional explanation for these facts.

If anything, stripping away the barriers that cover their flesh to be closer to the Gods that made them would actually be quite a spiritually enriching act, surely?

I don't think many scientists did what they did for justice or glory. My overall point is that there ARE many facts within the theory of evolution, and as a whole there really isn't any need to observe whether or not it has/is occurring. Due to the nature of science, though, it always will be a "just a theory". I'm sure Darwin and many others got over that a long time ago.

Not quite sure if you're listening. I just said that it's quite obvious it's a fact that evolution occurs. I can't argue with the facts that are presented for the case, I don't want to and I fully believe in evolution, you'd have to be a little backwards to not. It's also a fact that gravity forces things towards its gravitational centre. It's also a fact that the Earth orbits the sun. They're still called the THEORY of evolution, the THEORY of gravity and the THEORY of heliocentricity. It's purely an issue of semantics that I had an issue with.

Prove that the Gods weren't angered and caused an earthquake."

Seriously ?

We indeed could orchestrate an objective experiment which indeed could give us a vast amount of data. It would require blind testing a 5 year period 20 groups random nakedness and a record of earthquakes

A statistical correlation or not could be established

Of course I'd suggest that the above effort should only be taken if YOU can prove that you allowing other women to lick your cunt in the past has not angered the gods in fact prove to us that all the world's homosexual behavior has not angered them so much that all the world's volcano eruptions, deadly storms, earthquakes, lightening strikes, etc

So yes I will be able to prove that there is no statistical correlation between nudity on a mountain and local earthquakes

But I think you may struggle to PROVE that your as some religions and some people could term "debauched" behaviour is not directly responsible for the pain death and suffering of millions of humans each year from what some of us might term natural disasters ?

The irony of the use of the term "grow up " ?

SB's analogy was clear and adult , your deliberate mis interpretation , suggesting it is childish to compare the consequences was just being obtuse

It was a clear point illustrating your suggestion " respect all beliefs and customs when in another country " is without merit

You clearly illustrate when you find the consequences unpalatable you too don't respect the belief underlying it? Which was the hypocrisy SB was illustrating

from my perspective it is wrong to restrict a humans liberty based solely upon unsupported unsubstantiated imagining from the fertile human mind .

Whether a country operates under a secular or religious moral code, is it too much to ask that visitors to that country respect the people and their beliefs and laws? Visitors after all choose to visit a country, and by doing so are the not agreeing to respect the cultrue etc?

I enjoy travelling but am concious that my belief system may be very different to those in the country which I am visiting. I respect their cultures and laws in the same way I would expect visitors to the UK to do the same.

I think the young lady in question will have learned a lot. I was pleased that she pleaded guilty and showed remorse. All part of growing up.
