Personal trainer...

I'm starting with a personal trainer a week from Friday. He's using kettlebells and ropes with me.

I'm nervously excited about starting. He has warned me that I'll be extremely sore starting off.

Any advice for me? Are kettlebells good?

I'm on a toning up mission!

I'm studying the trainers course at the moment

If you don't hate your trainer, he's not doing his job correctly

Kettlebells are great

Just start with a lighter weight than you think. You'd only regret it after

Be very sure that you convey your goals to your trainer before you start.

Physique is 80% diet, 15% training and 5% other stuff (meal timing, suppliments etc etc).

"Toning up" essentially means a lower bodyfat percentage, preferably whilst maintaining muscle mass. Therefore your trainer should be telling you how many calories you should eat per day and also your macronutrient split. They should also be doing resistance training in one form or another with you. If they are not doing this, get rid of them.

To me personal trainers are a bit pointless. If you are looking to get fit, first look to get healthy. It is pointless setting unattainable goals, nobody knows what you can do, have done or are capable of doing in the gym better than yourself, so having someone beast you for an hour each week is silly personally.

If you want to get fit, get healthy first. Eat well, eat fresh, get a slow, steady, regular gym routine 3-4x per week (include swimming or sauna to relax in at the end). Ask advice, from staff on posture, lifts, curls, muscle groups, join small workshops and build knowledge up. It will all come together when you least realise, and you will not have been put off by some arse who is just out for some commission.

Just my thoughts.

Be careful with trainers the vast majority are useless aborting on incompetent and generally do short term gain stuff rather than things that are long terms sustainable.

Also expect billions of supersets that while make you feel knackered tend not to yield anything like the results of proper controlled reps and rest periods.

When ever I'm in the gym I can't help but cringe at what most of the trainers are doing with their customers.

Also, this.

To be honest, were it me, I'd have you at a slight deficit (2-300cal/day) and lifting heavy - possibly stronglifts or NRLW.

But that's just me and I'm no trainer, just a gym rat.

Gotta love strong lifts.

There was a trainer in the gym yesterday absolutely beating this bloke on supersets of concentration curls, hammer curls, barbel curls with practicality no rest.

instructors there counting off the reps when the guy is going nowhere near to the bottom of the movement, on the way up is using as much leaning back and twisting as possible to do mos to the work and even then not reaching full contraction.

Would have achieved much much more just doing one sensible routine of curls full range of motion, good form and full contraction.

But the trainers know what gets recommendations is the "oh yeah my trainers great I'm absolutely totally worn out after every session he has me doing so much stuff" comments to their friends.

Also: its curls....

If you want max benefit, compound movements are king.

What good are a thousand different arm excercises?

Always warm up and stretch properly and warm down as this will help immensely on your recovery. Look to eat an hour before and have a pasta to you have a slow burning carb to keep you going through the training. Good luck

Yep, one thing I like is when I'm there I basically have the rack to myself uninterrupted for my whole session ^_^

Pasta is not a complex slow burning carb it's refined starch....

Thank you for this. I've met with him 4 times over the past two weeks and he's assessed me.

We've spoken about goals, baby steps apparently.

If your trainer doesn't make you stretch he or she is dangerously shit at their job.

Meal timing is personal preference - I like to have something carbs-y before I train (usually a bowl of cereal), but I know of some people who prefer to train fasted and others (usually powerlifters) who like to have a big meal about an hour before they train...

I've done quite a bit of research on this guy. I know a few people who've gone to him and some who are still going.

He knows his stuff, and he gets results. Everyone I've talked to has huge respect for him.

I assume youve chosen your trainer as a match for your needs. I've used one over 2 years and very pleased. I sometimes want more than a good programme as I want the extra discipline.

I outline my goals and request an explanation of how he will help me to get them. His job Imo is also to teach me the science behind it - I'm sure many clients just want the results but I like this. I also like having a fit man around me, rather than solo workouts and he can fetch and carry all the gear that's needed and have a good laugh together. Too many po faced people in gyms.

forget the training and buy a tractor, did you know this;

John Deere remains out in front when it comes to the technology on its self-propelled forage harvesters.

No other company can offer an accurate and proven system to measure maize and grass constituents on a commercially available forage harvester.

The system is mounted on the spout of the forager, and this versatile and sophisticated piece of kit can also be quickly and easily removed in order for it to be used for analysis of stationary feeds and also winter silage.

You can't really tone up because there's nothing to tone, fat doesn't turn into muscle, fat is just fat, you want to lose fat and in doing so your muscles will be more defined and visible. Kettle bells are good but like others have said you need your diet to be on point otherwise it's pointless going to the gym if you're not going to make any lifestyle changes to your eating habits. I've lost 1 stone and 5lbs of the weight I put on when I was on the injection pill. My eating routines have changed, I do about 3hrs and 45 mins a week in the gym that's always a 20 min run and about 25 mins, doing weights, either legs, chest, back, abs or shoulders, in addition to that I do two 1 hour body pump classes, 1 hour kettle bell class, 2 hours yoga/Pilates, 5 hours a week pad and bag work, 1 hour Krav Maga and 1 hour jujitsu a week. In addition to that I work 2x10 hour nights shifts a week in a prison which I worked out the other day I walked 4 miles in one shift!

If you're new to training and looking to lose fat train legs as much as you can, your biggest muscles are in your legs and if you increase muscle mass and strength in your legs then you'll burn more calories even when you're sitting down. Training legs hard you'll get doms pretty bad, maybe invest in a foam roller and get yourself some nice radox bubble bath.

Oh and squats baby! Squats are your friend, get a nice big bad ass!

Girls are better than boys at training legs cos we wear high heels more and our calves are stronger. Speak to your trainer about different variations of squats, you can do sumo squats, toes pointed outwards they all work different parts of your legs and bum. Get your form sorted first and perfected and then build up the weight.

You should've asked me. I'm a personal trainer. I could've used ropes and you would've had much fun. It would only be sore if you wanted it to be.

Had a bit of an incident before with the hack squat, someone thought it was funny to put 90kg on when I thought it was 70 and I squatted down and couldn't bring it back up it went down to the safety catch and I just had to roll out sideways!

Those "tone up" tablets as you out it simply stop your body properly absorbing fats hence the horrible poos.

given fats are quite nessecery for a healthy diet if somone combined them with a low fat diet they'd be entering very unhealthy territory.

Either way you'd just be better adjusting your diet than taking dodgy pills

Personal trainers are a good way to motivate your arse into the gym if you lack the motivation to go alone (you are paying for it after all). Personally I prefer a mate of equal ability to push me to my limits, rather than someone who spends all day in a gym and doesn't know how to fit a diet and training program into a real working week!. Don't get me wrong some are very knowledgeable some however are not!. If you don't see real results within 4 week then bin them and recruit a mate! X

Dumbell thrusters are possibly the best exercise for most people wanting to "tone" especially done in hiit style.

Walking will be a challenge the next day though

Most of the advice in this thread is good. But ignore this.

Honestly I would only use a trainer to learnt te correct and safe Techniques to doing exercises and then once ive learnt them I would bin him/her. You get your abs and the rest of your physique in the kitchen. If you want to put on more mass it's pretty obvious that you would eat more, if you want to lose weight it's clear that you need to eat less. This doesn't mean if you have two burgers have one it means clean up your diet and eat the right amount. Too much of things that are good can be bad. Don't kick yourself as well if you do from time to time eat something unhealthy. In fact I would say dedicate one day at the end of the week to have one unhealthy meal that you really enjoy that you've given up, this gives you something to look forward to and a reward to keep you motivated. A lot of people give up because they don't teeard themselves so they have no morale.

thats my thinking too ... no point working to anyone elses goals other than your own. Joining exercise groups like yoga will have you see similar faces .. it'll get you just as inspired to see those faces who are attending and not

Ensure your exercise is fun. Research shoes that peoples results are better when they're doing something that they like.

I pop on and off the personal trainers at my place. Sometimes I like the variety of working with them vs. alone,or it motivates me to do more. Insist onfree instruction from your gym always, to ensure your techniques are top notch - that would be normal gym service. A personal trainer can always help you perfect it more.

Will you be getting one who's easy on the eyes? One of mine used to take me put each week, for dinner etc on a social, not work basis. Having the right skill set, personality and a little sexiness works for me.

How much do personal trainers charge?? I'd love to ask a bunch of questions of a really knowledgeable professional though I only swim, dance and ride normally.

You can still do superset and have a 3020 tempo on reps ( 3 secs down pause 2secs up) superset in short means less rest between sets while you aim to exhaust the agonist\antagonist muscle, or you can do agonist\agonist it depends - also these are good for beginners as it keeps the heart rate up resulting in more calories been burned - this training system is known as hypertrophy!!! You're welcome

I've met some great personal trainers in the last five years since I've been using a gym myself but unfortunately 80% of the ones I've come into contact with have been arrogant self obsessed tossers.I've been in the gym before now watching one trainer spending the whole hour of his clients booking boring her with nothing but pictures of his physique on his mobile phone.

Like one of the previous posters I've only used a trainer myself to run through techniques etc when experimenting with new weights and programmes such as suspension training.

By the way ..although you say your aiming to tone up do you have any specific goals or targets??

I've always wondered about getting a personal trainer. What do you do if you fancy them though, is it off-putting or motivating?

I only choose personal trainers that I fancy, as it adds an extra frisson in to the experience. I tend to work with them a few times too, so you both get to know each other, can flirt.

As long as they know your goals, will detail how their plan will meet them with evidence and understand that it's not a total defile and crash you session that's wanted - unless it is - then you're fine.

I'm a savvy shopper and spend my money wisely. I add in personal trainers if my routine's a bit naff, I fancy some variety, I want to achieve something that's potentially demanding or want to vary things from working out alone. Some of them will also take you out of the gym. One of mine used to be a regular dinner companion and another loves us playing, sorry working out, al fresco. Flirting is natural and the trainers I've worked with have all been totally charming.

It actually would be. They're ensuring you integrate your skills throughout your lifestyle. Most of them like a little play. Unless gf works at same gym, then its all straight laced text book crap.

No GF working there but he does have a wife. Nice shiny wedding band in tact.

Think I'll stick to the sweating.....and stealth perving!
