I had no idea how nerve wracking it is!

I've just dropped off my beloved little vespa at the garage and now I'm sat in wetherspoons, nervously drinking coffee and waiting for a call to say I can go fetch my baby back.

The thought of buying a new scooter and trading it in every three years is very appealing right now lol

I know for fact my car will fail and MOT when it's due, I just have to put one or two things back on it for it to pass

usually bikes and scooters dont have as many problems as cars for mot, my car failed last week, on 4 items, but what got me was corroded fuel pipe and filter DANGEROUS, but it was listed under advisories

We are constantly surprised when our old Yamaha passes each year but to be fair the test consists of do the lights work, does the horn work, do your blinkers work - job done

if only it was as solid as you say. They failed it on 'steering movement excessively notch with the wheel raised' and also an issue with the rear brake.

The brake is a relatively cheap fix apparently but the other will cost over 300 quid to fix because of the labour entailed.

In total it will cost as much as it's worth so not financially worth fixing

Now I know why everyone hates mot time

The mot certainly has it's quirks as it's a legal test not necessarily from a technical point of view.

The fuel system cannot have a leak but as the filter is not a specific test item it shouldn't be failed for being corroded hence the advisory.

the reason why it was listed as advisory would be the corrosion was detected but not to the state where it would be a danger, so it is advised that you get it seen too before it becomes too bad

Hi try find a local scooter club I mot all the scooters for the local club they normally have a member or two that do repairs I'm sure that they would help you out. £ 300 sounds pretty excessive for head bearings on a vespa

In mint condition it's only worth £600 and mine is far from being mint, it's got a fair few dents and scratches on one side from the previous owner dropping it.

I hate buses! Lol

£300 is a rip off! Yes nuts can seize up and it can be a bit of ball ache of a job. BUT the bearings will cost about £20 sit the bike on a milk crate or similar to make it easy to work on, take off the handlebars and undo the stem bolt, clean up, replace bearings, pack with nice new grease and put it back together again.

As advised find a local scooter club and ask them for help someone will do this in their shed for less than £100

filter is only 6 weeks old, it was a 25 quid mot so all the work done will be 110, which is how they recoup the low cost mot, the major tire and exhaust outfits have a habit of finding a few hundred quids worth of work, they wouldnt be able to if the garage who does the mot isnt allowed to do the repair work

Last October, my 19 year old Pride and Joy sailed through the MoT.

I've taken it off the road for a while to do some major overhaul work and preventative maintenance so that it will last another 20 years, but the little 4 year old Toyota Yaris i'm currently tooling around in went in for it's second ever MoT in January

And failed.

Mind you, it was only on the front tyres, which were unevenly worn due to the old lady who owns it keep scuffing the kerb and knocked the tracking out

the tester probably assessed the corrosion as minimal and not likely to be a serious risk, also an mot only says ther car was roadworthy at the TIME of the test

To the OP, £300 for that work is robbery, it should really cost about £100 parts & labour. Take it to a different garage or scooter club for a quote.

From an mot point of view corrosion on the fuel system is only an advise you can only fail a fuel system if the pipe is leaking or a union is leaking

Cat or DPF?

My pre-cat is gone, the main cat is a high flow sports cat so its all legal. Mine was never fitted with a DPF so I don't have to worry about that.

Aaah, you might want to drop the original system back on for the test then.

I'll be on the hunt for a V6 towards the end of the year (got to be another Alfa Busso V6 though). I've already got the exhaust for it!

Yeah that's the plan it just bolts back on. Got told it would fail on the mot when I had it serviced, also made me laugh that they'd been listening to the speakers whilst it was serviced....they forgot to turn them off when they gave it me back, this is at a main dealer too

I totally agree. I usually keep an eye on the general condition of my car and always sort out any unexpected mechanical failures immediately.

In fact, years ago, one particular MoT tester whom I had come to know quite well, knew how well I looked after my cars and that I was always on top of bulb failures etc, that for a couple of years on one of my cars he didn't bother with the lighting test - except headlight alignment.

And the fact that I have taken my car off the road for a major overhaul (even though it passed the MoT with flying colours only a few months before I parked it up) probably explains why it's still going strong at 19 years old, and why it will still be around when my 7 year old son is old enough to drive

As has been said, 300 notes for Vespa head bearings is a lot. There's bound to be someone on the scooter scene who will sort that for less than half that and a few pints.

If its a reliable scooter I'd want it repaired. Buying another one might just give you more hassle.

Hubby popped in to see the vespa specialists in Coventry fargo village. He's shown them a pic of the failure notice which I sent him. The quote is 100 and then the cost of another mot on top.......it's being collected on Friday

Outstanding...

I'd take that quote to the garage that originally quoted you £300. They might match it and you'd save yourself the cost of another MOT or risk it failing on something they could have missed.

I'm gonna stick with the specialist. When my exhaust broke he was recommended to us and supplied a new one at a very good price. He had been supplying parts for a while and set up his garage a few weeks after we bought from him. He has gone from strength to strength and is now turning people away, giving a timescale of end of July, unless existing customers.

The only reason I took my scooter to the other place is because it's close to home and does not involve having to ride on the death trap that is coventry's ring road.

Having chatted to hubby this evening he is convinced the garage I used only quoted such a large sum to try to get me interested in buying a new machine..... I came home with details of a lovely new scooter and how to arrange a test ride

That speaks volumes. It's why I never have my car MOT'd at a garage that sells cars and when I buy a car from a dealer the first thing I do is have an independent inspection carried out by a specialist.

And, when I am looking to buy a replacement Vespa I know where I'll be looking......hubby says he saw some beautiful second hand and restored vintage machines being sold independently through this guy's garage, he just takes a commision

just taken my hippy wagon to be mot'd this morning.... that hour is like hell!!!

it passed.... but everything that goes thru your mind whilst waiting is torture...

the place i go to adds to the torture by having a place where you can actually watch it going on... and everything the examiner makes a head movement you are thinking... how much is this going to.....

thank god only thing mine needed is a new passenger side windscreen wiper... but its almost like an inditement on your driving....
