no matter

Any one been on these courses I think for speeding and general driving awareness.?

What do they consist of? My OH got caught on a camera and it seems you have a choice to do a course or get points.36 in a 30 limit bummer

Anyone done the course I wonder if we have to re learn the highway code etc before he goes.

thanks.

Yeah done the speed awareness course a few years back. 3 hours I think it was just general stuff about the effects an accident at speed can do.

Never done one.

I'd have thought that keeping up with the highway code was a good idea regardless of doing an awareness course though.

Costs £90 but no points

Some insurers ask if you have been on a course when getting quotes

I did mine about 3 years ago.

Watch videos and participate in questions and answer sessions

No tests to sit

It Depends on the instructor on how interesting (or boring) it is. Personally the course I attended was more than bearable. Apparently others haven't been so lucky. If he stays awake and pays reasonable attention he is guaranteed a pass.

I did one last year. It's usually a morning or afternoon. There were about 20 of us in a room and shown videos of serious car accidents and lectured on stopping distances etc. It was beyond dull but better than 3 points. I was amazed though that about 75% didn't know the national speed limit!

They're usually half a day, you don't need to relearn anything but if you do an afternoon course. they usually finish at 5 so it's a foot down job to get home in time for tea

I've attended one - I found it really good and it did really make me think about my speed afterwards.

Didn't need to study the Highway Code but they revisited parts of it ,

I went on one about 5 years ago and despite what I first thought it would be like, it was actually quite interesting and educational. No you don't have to learn the highway code again and no they don't preach or talk down to you - at least they didn't on the one that I went to. I actually did come away with a better insight into the results of speeding. It was all very informal

Actually found it very informative and it does change your driving habits although I am a slow learner which is why I've been on two of them

I've done one. Our instructor was funny as well as informative and we went over all the speed regulations and signs really thoroughly. It sank on far more than it did when I first took my test.

Totally agree .

The most boring 4 hours of my life and I did ask after 2 hours if I could go . Got told I would get the points and a fine if I did .

Complete and utter waste of time and next time I will happily take the fine and points .

Oh and before anyone gets on their high horse , I was done for doing 34 in a 30 at 2.45 am ....

Not sure if rules are different in your area but you are allowed a 10% margin plus 3 miles per hour ,the mi I.um speed you should get done for is 36 mph

It's actually 10%+2mph. Also every cars speedo over reads by a couple of mph so there's no excuse for speeding really.

I'm not preaching or judging, I regularly break the speed limit.

My other half has been on one. Said it was boring as fuck and next time he'd rather take the points.

But I did notice him driving a lot more carefully afterwards, whether that was the course or the fine I don't know, but one of them made him drive like less of an arse.

Did one last month, better things to be doing but was actually quite an enjoyable day, light hearted and going through road safety etc,

There is a book they give you with 12 simple enough highway code questions, don't worry about them you keep the book and they only refer to them,

Do what I did, ring and reject the first date, try and get a Fri, much better when everyone's in good weekend mood rather than pissed off Monday

that is guidance only and not law its soley at the discretion of the local cheif officer at what point they prosecute in the eyes of the law 31 in a 30 can lead to prosecution

4 years on and now clear of points I wanted to do course. 56 in a 50 temp roadworks at night no one working. But was issued the poi rd automatically. My favourite one was the use of a mobile device while driving. I ended up telling the instructor what the maximum penalty for me could have been. As he did don't know.

West Wales and Cardiff

I did one Monday.

It was really good. I like to think I'm a good driver, with a good knowledge of the rules of the road, but I definitely learnt a few things. The most interesting bit was actual the basic maths behind how changes in speed affect stopping distances and so on.

There were 20 odd people on the course and everyone I heard was positive about it except one. Quite a few said openly that a day refresher course on driving every few years would be a good idea.

The lack of knowledge of speed limits etc was pretty shocking. Suggests to me these courses are a good thing.

Far better than having points IMO.

I had to take the course as had already previously taken the points.

I'd sum it up as a long drawn out Highway Code refresher course which isn't a bad idea if condensed into an hour. 4 hours later and I was losing the will to live.

I'm more aware of doing 35 in a 30 now whilst being over taken by eejits doing 50.

Money generator comes to mind.

"Easy to avoid finding out do not speed simples ??"

Exactly, it's not hard to just do 30mph in a 30 limit. You don't get there that much faster, and there's no stress at all. If people drive up your backside, slow down a little to compensate for their reduced braking distance and enjoy the journey.

Tony used to be a speeder, then once we went to Manchester in two cars (a 2 hour journey), Tony sped, Julia didn't.

Tony got there first, lit a cigarette up (we both smoked then, haven't smoked for 8 years now) and the cigarette wasn't even finished by the time Julia arrived. From then on, no speeding, no fines, no fuss, no stress. Try it.

You do realise doing 35 in a 30 makes you an eejit to those who abide by the limits (which is most people), right?

Yes, I did one two years ago because I wrote my car off at speed - but didn't hurt anyone else.

It was a really, really good day for me and I learned so much. Don't worry about doing anything in advance, you don't get tested. Going out in a car for a couple of hours with an advanced instructor was really enlightening and well worth the money I paid for the course - it corrected some really bad habbits I'd picked up since passing my driving test initially and has made me a much better driver as a result.

Yep I do, I don't dispute that.

So if I find my speed creeping upto 35 in a 30 I'll slow right down to the speed limit now which is what I meant to portray in my earlier post.

Whilst having a load of people up my arse trying to get past.

Good on you. Don't worry about those up your arse, that's their problem not yours. If they get too close just slow down a little to compensate for their loss of braking distance.
