Yes, always. As a hairdresser (self employed but used to work in a salon) I know how difficult it is to scrape a living. Hairdressing is a skill that you train for.

Waitressing not so much but it's still hard work and can be physically demanding when busy.

However on both counts I only tip when i've had a good service.

My hairdresser, yes, waiters, sometimes, taxi drivers, no. They shouldn't charge me so much to go home on a night out!

Hairdresser yes because I always go to the same one and she's great Restaurants always unless they were crap. Taxi drivers I'll usually just round it up to the next £ because I can't be arsed carrying loads of shrapnel round in my purse anyway.

If I receive good service I will tip. Never on a card though, always in cash. Unless I've read the small print and know that it goes to the person serving me, and not split between the team.

I always take my car to the same hand car wash, and they remember me and give my car a little bit extra every time I go in, I know it's because I tip well, but if they give me a Gold clean for the price of a Silver because of that, then who am I to complain.

I don't mind a tip jar, dunno why a lot seem to have a problem with it, a bar/restaurant works as a team and it's good that everyone gets something, like the poor commis chefs etc.

Generally found when asking about the tip jars a lot of companies don't share it out...or they do but the ones who gave bad service get it too...

Why not do something a little more positive like lobbying for a decent basic wage for low earners ?

How do you feel about tipping people who earn more than you do ?

My haidresser charges me thirty quid for about half an hours work. That's one hell of a lot more than I earn. Same goes for the joiner who put up a batten for me. Thirty five quid labour only ...

You're not rich. You're not landed gentry showing gratitude to the peasants.

Generally no - I don't get tips for doing my job well, employers should pay a living wage. I think giving tips perpetuates the situation where employers feel they can pay less and expect the public to top up wages for them.

Ironic...my Mrs used to have 4 part-time cleaning jobs, yep you got it, 42 hours week picking up other peoples crap. She worked exceedingly hard for minimum wage and never got any 'tips', or extra cash given freely by anyone who benefited from the 'service'. Then on a Saturday evening off with the overalls, on with the going out gear and out to dinner... then as we are leaving...she leaves a 'tip'

It's both possible and probable that the waitress who got the tip is a mother of a child that makes a mess of the school that my Mrs used to clean

Who tips shop assistants who work exceedingly hard for minimum pay? Anyone tip the shopping trolley collectors at the supermarket? They are only there because the public to too damn lazy to put the trolley back!

So what is the idea that waiters/waitresses, maybe hair dressers and taxi drivers should be given 'cash in hand' on top of the wage packet their agreed to work for?

And 'no', I don't leave tips

I think it's when you deal with people on a personal level, I always get tips at Christmas, and my clients (bless them I adore them) often bring me little gifts, usually cake!!! because I don't just do what I'm paid for I go the extra mile.

I in turn tip when someone makes me feel a bit spesh, it's not always money... We have a gardener on the estate my home is on, i guess its his job to do bits in my garden but really it's mine so when he does I make him biscuits!!

As someone else said, it's just a nice thing to do
