After Britain's top cop says the police physical fitness test is to easy, should overweight/unfit policemen be sacked?. This of course discounts those injured on duty who deserve to retained in other physicaly less demanding roles.

I can't see that happening, as it will be up to some legal challenge no doubt.

Why don't they make test more in keeping with the fitness levels they require if that's the case.

A sacking is harsh but I agree that they should be in above average condition. I'm sure there's other penalties that could be enforced.

It always seems a bit strange to me that if a job in a disciplined environment requires a fitness test then they should have some time set aside in order to do PT and attain that fitness.

Give them the time to do it then fair enough maintain a standard of fitness.

My brother is a police officer. I frequently make fat jokes at him (he does carry a little extra weight). He's also as fit as I was when I was a para.

Looks can sometimes be deceiving.

There was a case of a higher ranking female officer who tried the fitness test and failed. She was paid out 20 thousand pounds as she sued her force for being bullied and told a re_iew panel she felt as if she was being made fun of as she failed the test.

The fitness level of 5.4 is not a high level to get to at all. And a person who could potentially be chasing someone should be able to reach this level and maintain it.

The fire service has a level of 9.6 and they are now expected to maintain this level all through their career which is now expecting them to work till 60 years of age.

I have 6 month fitness tests and I'm only a prison custody officer, if we've got to be fit then the police definitely should.

What if a policeman has years of experience which he passes on to the new policemen and he's really good at his job? he's saved people's lives and helped the community by banging up loads of crims? Shall we sack him too? just because someone is overweight doesn't mean they are bad at their job. you'll be trying to sack them for being too short next or having the wrong colour hair!

Fatness isn't a disability you can reverse it with a small amount of effort.

was going to say - my dad was a PO and if they didn't pass not only fitness tests but riot tests then they would be re-assigned to another position.

Although most people don't realize it the police are the police are the internal member of the armed forces, and like all members of the armed forces there is a requirement to be fit for roll. If a police officer is not fit for roll they should be removed as unfit.

why stop there ...over weight doctors telling others to take weight off when they are really over weight too .

Really?! That's seems crazy considering they're expected to do the same job.

I know The Met has a tough fitness entrance criteria I'm going to ask my friend if he has been retested since joining.

"

a doctor rarely has to chase down his patients i imagine so his weight doesnt affect his ability to work.

When I joined the police many years ago we were the first intake where fitness was a requirement of service. The basic test in force after 14 weeks of training was a mile and a half in under 12 minutes. For the first few years they called us in to re-test every year and then it got forgotten. For those that joined before us there was no requirement for any level of fitness.
