Last year I wrote a personalised poem for my mum and each of my sisters.

Then printed it on nice paper and framed it and presented each with a corresponding necklace.

My mum had a heart, older sister a blue crystal and younger sister a pink crystal.

For Mother's Day I got my dad this 1930s bakerlite electrical resistance tested, in it's original leather case.

Found it in a charity shop for £20.

If you know how to use it, it's like a proto-taser.

He loved it.

Basic poetry is pretty much just word association

For example if it's someone you lean on rock is a common one.

So...

You are the rock that I can always lean on

Then we rhyme it

You are the rock that I can always lean on.

You formed the base I built my life upon.

I always try to tell a story with mine and I go for the rhyme every two lines so for a birthday it'd be something like

Today is your day

As the heralds foretold

x years on this planet

With you they really broke the mould

The seasons come and go

The leaves brighten and fade

We've had good times and bad

We've cried and we've played

But through it I have loved you

And always will

Ignore what they'll say

You're not over the hill

Just yet, I love you.

Comedic twist at the end to lighten it up

Only kidding. My dad used to ask us not to buy him things but to take him to the pub and have a drink with him.

He had more shirts than Oxfam but always wore the same few.

Whatever you do or give, remember to let him know you love him for who he is, not who you would like him to be.

My dad died years ago, but I always make the effort to get something for my exs dad as he's such a nice guy. Usually books as we have similar taste.

None of his own kids bother with as much as a card.

This one is a bit left-field but for Christmas got him and my mum a stargazing trip to Kielder Observatory because he likes space stuff. If he's into history or space or old trains or something, tourist venues often do special events you can book for.

Could get him some football orientated stuff, such as a mug or coaster with the team he supports logo on it, or keyring with his teams logo on it?

If splashing out, tickets to go and watch his team next season or if he's into cricket or rugby, tickets to go watch a match.

Key ring engraved with your birth year month and day and saying "the day you became my dad"

Cufflinks with his DOB on one and yours on the other.

If the gifts you usually give him have a theme based around his hobbies, gardening, DIY, whatever, you've got to get him something different. Adds to the suprise and shows you're thinking of him and see the day as being a bit more special.

He is a very traditional man. Food included.

He gets clostraphobic so confinded spaces are no good either.

Ask your mum if she can tell you if places you went. If it was a seaside. Re live your childhood memories, walks along the beach, paddling in the sea, fish and chip supper. I'm sure your dad would enjoy that

I think this post means, you need to think of something that you know he will really like that is personal to him.

The best presents we get are the ones we may have mentioned months before in general chatting that we might like to do/ buy for ourselves/ something from our past that we might like to revisit or do again etc....sometimes they don't cost any money but the the fact they really thought about what we might like makes it more special.

I think this post means, you need to think of something that you know he will really like that is personal to him.

I quite agree rugby... I might ask him later if there is anything he really wants or would like to do, bring it up in general conversation
