If your cold has almost gone, you probably have another 48 hours to lose it completely. In the mean time you have irritated your vocal chords (Mucus from your sinuses etc...)and they will be dry and not tightening properly as you speak. If they are not moist and tight they will rub together as the air passes over them, making matters worse.

Rule number one, if you can... dont talk. If you have too, keep it to a minimum and talk softly.

Keep your throat warm at all times and if you go out in the cold, wrap up.

Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, slowly and steadilly.

Lemon will help clear your throat and clean the vocal chords, but dont drink it neat.

Honey will soothe and the sugar will clean as well as any non prescribed antibiotic.

Drink lots of fluids. Not too hot, not too cold and no alcohol.

Steam will help. Either a basin of hot water and a towell over your head, or (I prefer) one of those facial saunas. Again breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth.

If you have a shower cubicle at home, set the water hot enough to produce vapour and stand under it again, breathing deeply as above.

(A hot bath in my experience has to be TOO hot to get in to produce enough vapour, and goes cold too quickly... IMHO)

Wrap up warm and snuggle under a duvet when you have done.

Beware all throat sweets which can tend to dry the throat.

Be careful also with eucaliptus for the same reasons.

Vitamin C will raise your general health to help combat the cause of your symptoms.

In extremis I did once gargle with Sage tea, not too hot, but it tasted disgusting.

I am not a doctor, but the above has seen me through some awkward moments in a previous career.

If they are still laughing at you at home.... SLAP DONT SCREAM.

Good luck.....

You could always suck a fishermans friend - won't do anything for your voice but the fishermans friend will have a smile on his face

Sriously tho, I get that complaint, once every year without fail and there is bollox all I can do about it, I just have to leave it go go away of it's own accord. Once you start coughing up the browny green gunge then you know that the road to recovery is not too far away ..

The wife loves it when it happens cos I cannot speak, all it needs is for someone to break all my fingers so I can no longer type my crap on the forums then everybody will be happy

Nope...

Used to be a professional singer...

And although it isnt short and snappy... I earned the name, and hold onto it for the memories...
