Good or terrible idea?

So I've been thinking at work the last week of July first week of August is a forced holiday, been thinking now the bikes sorted and I've got some touring kit of doing a trial run travelling around the UK as practice for doing Europe next year.

Gonna take a small tent an some camping gear so I can find out what is really good to have and what not to forget for a longer trip

but I was thinking since we've got fabbers spread out all over the country it would be a good opertunity to meet those folks who are too far to travel to normally.

do you think many people would be happy to have a guest for a night or two, or a social out in town or being a bit of a tour guide lol.

or do you think it's a bit too much wishful thinking/trying to herd cats lol.

It's a great idea .Did a similar thing with a friend many years ago after we left college, just biked around the U.k. stopping off every night to sleep. Pre fab days but I don't see why if you planned it well it wouldn't work.

Me and 2 mates toured Europe for a month in 1986. I was on a Kawasaki Z750 L1, the other two were a Moto Guzzi LeMans 850 and a Laverda Jota 1000.

We had loads of fun meeting bikers of all different nationalities as well as testing the bikes round some snaky mountain roads.

Wish I had taken ma Yamaha RD400, but it might have needed a petrol station every 50 miles or so

If you are just over the border, not very far.there isn't a big ditch separating the two countries.

Yeah, sounds a great idea. Some of us have beds too, which could give you intermittent breaks from camping, or lawns to put your tent up on.

Any bikers got any touring essentials/recommendations.

So far thinking

Compact roll up full waterproof over suit, save having to carry a set of textiles and leathers.

One of those under seat power packs for charging mobiles/jumpstarting the bike.

Wire in a cigarette lighter socket to the dash for a GPS rather than using my phone.

any recommendations for kit/prep for me or the bike?

My brother is a mountain leader and does mountain rescue etc so ill borrow as much as I can from him for that kind of stuff.

Need to work out places I want to vist/good things to see/good roads then look for people local to them I think.

You really need a hard wired GPS - much less messing about than using your phone. You can get Chinese ones from eBay for around a hundred quid.

I'd go with vaguely waterproof textiles rather than leathers and waterproofs.

Puncture kit?

First aid kit?

always have a first aid kit with my gear, will add a puncture kit and a new set of tyres (will scrub them in the week before)

having seen what happened to my textiles when they touched the ground i wuite like my heavy duty kevlars.

seen a decent rain suit (wtih zipp off to the side and down the leg so water doesn't pool in your crotch ) and some rain over gloves/boots (but i do wear eal skinz waterproof socks as standard) that should fold up nicely.

everything will be going in a top box, plus a kreiga tail pack on the passenger seat and my small back pack, no panniers so travelling light lol.

Great Idea in theory but in reality I wouldn't have a stranger staying over a night or two.

To be VERY honest it'd be less than an hour after play. Shorter still suits me.

Most swingers want sexual recreation not to wake up with a b and b 'guest' in the morning.

Meeting on your travels but staying in a hotel or hostel would be better.

You could provided the accommodation.

When we travel a round Britten we plan our route were we are going to stay for a few nights in the 3 weeks book lodges and put an add in the holiday section were we are going to be for people to get in touch with us it works very well

Make sure you carry a puncture repair kit. A flat tyre can completely ruin your trip especially over a Bank Holiday weekend. They're cheap and compact and will keep you mobile if not traveling at motorway speeds. Let me know if you're around the Reading area and if I'm not away I may get my bike out and join you for a day or two.

"So I've been thinking at work the last week of July first week of August is a forced holiday, been thinking now the bikes sorted and I've got some touring kit of doing a trial run travelling around the UK as practice for doing Europe next year.

"

I thinks it's a great idea and would probably ask the same thing.

If you are heading to Devon, give me a shout and I'd gladly meet up for a social

Yeah along with some witnesses.

gonna be fun an game swith insurance though he's joined then gone straight across all three lanes (before even the 200 yard marker) right out in front of me then realised traffic is slowing and had to brake hard. I mated to brake as much as I could but still clipped his bumper and went down then across the road.

Get to the hospital!!! My ex had an accident from a bike and woke in the middle of the night in agony... Turns out he had burst his spleen!!!!!! You wouldn't have guessed and even the docs said there was no signs...

Luckily he took so much growth hormone and steroids, it healed super fast.... Every cloud and all that

Seriously though, hospital Mr. Or I'll worry about you.. And I've got a hot date, so don't be selfish

If you stay at VA one night they have rooms or you can camp in the garden

Or once you're on the road you could do a post and update it with your next few locations.

yeah once ive got the route a bit more planned with secrtiomns of road/places i want to hit. i'll update my profile with the info and here and when iset off ill make a new thread.

Need to pick some spots and roads I want to go to and then I guess start working in people near to them and a rough order/dates"

Well you know you're welcome here Hun! I may have the kids - depending on when you come - but can get a sitter for a few hours and you're welcome to sleep on the sofa and use the shower!

Been seen by the nurse and now been advised it's a several hour wait for the doctor.

Neck is starting to hurt along with a throbbing headache.

I thought you were meant to get better not worse as time went on

Shock hides a lot mate. I broke my skull a few yrs back 3 months before it got noticed and that was only found because I went to drs with a constant running nose. It wasn't my nose running it was fluid that's supposed to be around your brain. Take the 4 hour wait mate
