I will offer complete respect to people who I believe deserve it. There are some people in this world that I have zero respect for and they me. I am cool with that.

I don't need their respect.

I think earned respect is different to the type of respect you show others upon meeting them.

I show respect to everyone when I first meet them but they can do or say something that will destroy that respect. It doesn't, however, stop them from earning my respect later down the road.

Personally I always give and show respect....then it's down to the recipient to deserve it continuing

Respect is generally earned for me, show time and again you are worthy of it and it's yours.

But I treat everybody as initially neutral regardless of what I've been told about them.

If you show that you deserve no respect you get none.

Respect is worth little if it isn't mutual - if you respect someone who doesn't respect you, how many times will you let them abuse you before that respect for them is lost?

Sometimes it isn't about mutual respect - it can be about disliking someone as much as they dislike you but not giving them the satisfaction of seeing your feathers ruffled.

This works best in scenarios you're regularly exposed to but can't easily escape from - a work setting for example.

Exactly - I think every stranger should be given a basic level of respect by default.

An additional depth of respect can be earned, but if I lose respect for someone, it is hard to regain.

I try to treat all people with respect whether I believe they deserve it or not. I think it makes me a better person and, when they don't show it back, shows them for what they truly are.

The right thing to do is to treat every single person with respect. If you don't get it back then you know where you stand. Because if every person took the _iew that respect needs to be given before we give it. Then nobody would be respecting anyone ever, would they? .

Respecting others is my default position. Just because I may respect someone doesn't mean I necessarily agree with everything they say or do.

I have no problem respecting an abnoxious bigot, I just don't necessarily respect their abnoxious or bigoted _iews.

In a sane, decent society.

Good manners, the right attitude and politeness will earn respect.

Bad manners, a nasty attitude and impoliteness will earn disrespect.

"Earned definately."

So if I think the same as you. You won't respect me until I earn it. I won't respect you until you earn it. Therefore from the beginning we don't respect each other.

God I would hate to live in a world where everyone thought that way.

I don't think it's that straight forward; I give a little respect automatically (courtesy) but this is quite swiftly lost or built upon.

Proper, respect in its full sense is most definitely earned.

Hmmm interesting one. I can behave respectfully towards someone I don't respect, I can behave disrespectfully to someone I respect and any other combination of those too. I endeavour to be respectful to others no matter what but sometimes I fail. I expect they will too with me. On the whole I avoid people I find it hard to respect.

Respect for others is given as standard by me, to a publicly acceptable level. I may lower this, if others demonstrate their diminished respect for me.

Our societal norms are to show some respect automatically. We don't push into others whilst walking, speak our thoughts aloud, without censorship etc. We are social animals and able to think before acting.
