Yves Saint Laurent has been banned from releasing its latest advert in Britain because the model pictured by the high-end fashion house looks “unhealthily thin”.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said that the image of the woman, pictured lying on the floor in a short black dress and high heels, was “irresponsible” because of the “narrowness” of her legs and the fact that her rib-cage was “visible” and “prominent”.

Do you agree with the decision?

I do. It's too thin.

I wish they would get some models that are a size 12-14 and bigger.

I agree with you. I have a niece who is 15 those sorts of images are what make girls that age body conscious

The lady could be that thin and why should she not model.

Not my cup of tea and i like my ladies with curves bumps and boobs!

90% increase of 13 to 19 year olds in the last three years admitted to hospital with eating disorders.

Then all those that are not admitted.

I haven't seen the model so can't comment on her.

Maybe body image should be addressed in schools, being taught confidence in schools to love ourselves, not just bodily but to have self respect and confidence.

Taught how to have a good balanced diet.

It can be extremely detrimental to be either to thin or to fat.

Let's not think this is just a problem for girls though, eating disorders for boys is always on the increase.

Advertisements no matter what they are for should feature more people that we can identify with.

Most people are never going to be beauty queens/kings or have the perfect body (whatever that is) but we can all strive to look gradient, fit and healthy

I agree. I don't feel enough is done in schools about body image etc.

Yes it's not just girls and women, boys and men too.

Totally agree with the OP.

The fashion and beauty industry has a lot to answer for in portraying unhealthy images to young women and girls.

I remember the "heroin chiq" look of the 1990s. WTF was that about?

There should be a mixture of models and manikins ranging from size 10 to 16.

I get fed up of seeing size 6 or 8 models and manikins. Obviously not all of us are those sizes and don't want to be.

That thin is not healthy! Ok she is tall but I bet my life she is that thin because it's in her modelling contract!

This is just pretty fucked up. The model is way too thin. What's wrong with having some regular looking women in adverts for a change? There's no need for this at all. Images like this definitely have an impact on young minds.

I seen this today in the paper.... I totally agree with this it should be banned.... Her heels are thicker than her waist! Sorry to say she does look unhealthy thin....

Its not a good role model for young teens wanting to keep up with fashion believing there fat if they are a size 10 or 12 +

Hope my comment doesnt offend ppl its not my intention to do that! Just my personal opinion

Yes I think they are right to ban. Sadly most young girls think they have to be the same AND THEY DONT Need to be. I don't like to see skin and bone. A good healthy body is far more attractive. IMO. and few curves can be very sexy too.

When I was pregnant I really really wanted a girl, I was convinced it was a girl. To be honest I'm glad i didn't have a girl as I think I would have struggled bringing her up because of the world of fashion and beauty today.

I have a friend who has a teenager and she often puts her on a diet as she thinks she is getting fat! My no means is she getting fat! She is healthy, she looks healthy and is beautiful too (could even be a model) as much as I live my friend, it saddens me that she is very image conscious.

However movies featuring action heroes covered in rippling muscles (eg Wolverine, Marvel Movies in general, 300 etc) don't get any stick for peddling unrealistic images of masculinity to young men - funny that?

Sadly whilever newspaper will print stories such as this, advertisers will continue to use the shock value to get publicity. Whether they sell make-up, slimming-products or bus-passes. I am surprised the Grauniad chose to publish the pic, I would have thought they would have known better.

As Costa found out re: Corporation Tax, only public boycotts work.

Ladies, you have more power than you think, you just need to exercise it.

Put your child on a diet? Really, the only time I'd consider this, would be if their health was at risk obviously, ridiculous your freind doesn't deserve to be a parent!!

That model looks ill and the image she portrays is a dangerous one what with the certain lifestyle websites online that glory in anorexia and extreme thinness.

Healthy bodies not too thin and not fat would be very subjective though to represent in advertising.

I agree models should be of all shapes and sizes however some people are naturally wafer thin, myself included, and I myself hate it but cannot change.

The point I'm trying to make is it doesn't matter what size you are the media make you feel uncomfortable and self conscious ie...too fat loose weight, too skinny it's unhealthy so eat more

we need to start helping people be happy with who they are and have confidence in themselves without feeling the need to "fit" in x

This advert makes me sad. For whatever reason they decided to use her, it doesn't reflect well on the brand at all. It doesn't even make their clothes look good. Kind of makes the furore about that Protein World ad look pretty stupid now compared to this! But where are the Shoreditch, hipster do-gooders now?

It isn't up to the schools to teach kids about things like body image. By all means, talk to them about it if the subject comes up but schools (and the kids) are stretched pretty thin as it is (no pun intended) and if everything that 'should be taught in schools' i.e. internet safety, body image, entrepreneurship etc. was introduced, not only would there not be enough time but you need to have people who know about these subjects to do it.

Parents really have to get a grip and take the responsibility for teaching their kids about 'life' and leave the academic stuff to the teachers.

We don't have kids so not much in the way of experience and you're probably right. We can protect kids from everything though. The fashion industry needs to take a long hard look at itself and who it's really 'talking' to as the responsibility absolutely lies with them though. It's such a massive headache though with adverts across social media and the globe, it would be difficult for any government to get a grip of this.

The media has to shoulder a huge amount of blame, in particular those that redistribute these images in the name of 'news'. This ad isn't aimed at children and I'm willing to bet this ad wasn't placed anywhere where young children really should've seen it but by the news agencies clamouring for 'news' it does end up in places where kids can see it.

I think its totally ridiculous that you have to look like you have been dead for a while in order to model clothes.... Just as I think plus sized models need to be bigger than a 14/16.... Normal people aren't the walking dead....plus sized people aren't normal size....i think everyday models should be 12/14 and plus size 20/22..... You have no idea what something is going to look like when the person modelling it isn't remotely similar.

My daughter is nearly 16, wears a size 14/16 and is 5'10... She is all in proportion, nicely shaped and incredibly beautiful...yet she wants to be thinner...she would look ill if she was thinner...

Just ranting now but do believe that teenagers and women need more realistic role models when it comes to body shape
