Yet another accident at Alton towers

I use to go here regular and went on every ride there was but was always worried that something would go wrong eventually

Just hope all those injured people make a quick recovery..

What do you reckon to scary rides.....do you trust them?

No and I'm gladly kids are past the stage of wanting to go. As a young teenager I saw two boys fall from the top of a big wheel, since then I've always hated that kind of thing.

I was only talking to someone at work about going on Monday , as he'd been in half term. I hope those injured recover soon. It looked like a nasty accident.

According to the news some of the injuries are "life changing", which is such a shame. That ride has been plagued with problems since it opened, I guess that's what happens when you decide a world record is more important than safety.

Isn't it also built on the site of the Black Hole ride that killed someone?

We were thinking of going mainly to go on the smiler but after seeing that yesterday it's put me off, apparently there's been problems with it since it opened though.

Our daughter is going next week with her friends. She asked us if we were worried about her going after this tragic accident.

I said not at all, it's probably the safest time to go. She looked at me quizzically and I explained that every ride and every safety procedure will be thoroughly checked out after an accident.

Obviously I am anxious about her going but if we acted every time we felt anxious about our kids doing something they would hardly ever go out the front door.

Hope the people on the ride are ok soon

Good point about heightened safety checks.

Poor kids and those that saw it happen.

I agree. Many more people receive life changing injuries on the roads than on rides like this. I would do the same as you and just be darn thankful when they got home.

Apparently riders have a 1 in 24 million chance of serious injury and a more than 1 in one-and-a-half billion chance of being fatally injured.

You are much more likely to be killed driving there.

Even more bizarre, you are technically more likely to gain a serious injury from a garden chair!

Thoughts with those involved nevertheless.

Yes, it must have been awful and scary for the witnesses too. Many would have been teenagers.

Yes I am not up on my statistics but I know that we can't wrap em up in cotton wool and yes I am more worried about her safety in the mode of transport she is using to get there, which is one of her male friends driving a clapped out hot hatch back...... eeeeek!!

That's where I wish accidents like this were prosecuted differently.

Presumably the ride controller is a young person on minimum wage, and decisions/pressure made by management contributed to the accident.

A few days ago there was a thread stating that a young man who killed someone in a traffic accident deserved to go to jail for life, whereas here no-one will even be investigated.

Many years ago I worked a season at Butlins. One of my first jobs was operating a funfair ride. My training lasted about 15minutes and consisted of "you press this button to start the ride and once you've done that The ride does it's own thing. Here's the emergency stop button but don't press it because it requires a key to restart the ride. The lap bars are operated like this. Have fun".

I see Alton Towers being no different.

I was thinking that. But they may not have known it was stuck. That ride has more than one set of cars going round at once. It may have been fine when they sent the cars with people in. I hope the press don't release the name of the person that sent the car going with the people in. They must be distraught.

So glad to see a pragmatic response.... Me personally, I will go on the rides when I'm able...obviously there is risk, but minimal... Just like lots of things in life

A good post and a very valid point about it being the safest time to go now .
