May seem a strange place to post this but I am filling time while sitting with a dying close relative for the night.

Any advice on how to hold it all together and be supportive to them appreciated.

I've done this voluntarily at several hospitals/hospices, where those dying have no family or friends, for many years

If they're able to talk, just being able to listen is often more than enough

But if not, holding hands, talking about what you know of their lives, maybe cheerful current events

Simply a weather update or telling them which flowers are blooming raises a smile

I hope they have a peaceful and painfree journey to their eternal rest

Jeez this forum really is everything from light and shade to the very darkest moments.

Wish I had words but I think we find our own paths through these things...somehow. Had to watch my grandfather (Pop) pass away from cancer on Christmas Eve when I was 17. Don't know how I did it or got through the following days. Still feel kind of numb about it. Just keep faith that my family and I did all we could to make his passing as easily as possible. Talking to him like we always had. Holding his hand and keeping him comfortable.

Done this with my Dad, just sat there talking about all the good things we'd done together and told him how much he meant to me. Chin up dude, my thoughts are with you

I wish you luck and strength also at this time. Just be there, as others have said, talk or hold their hand. I wasnt with my dad when he passed away, missed him by minutes and although it wasnt my fault, its one of my big regrets in life.

If you're allowed to get on the bed and hold/hug them then do that, if they like being held/hugged.

It's tough but as long as you're holding your love and support for them, all the little detail is somewhat insignificant. Treasure those last moments together and let them know they're treasured. Any peace and tranquility you can bring is helpful, if someone's not in the best state. If they're somewhat conscious, take the opportunity to say things that you perhaps haven't before and do anything that's meaningful.

If you're like me, you'll remember very clearly afterwards and hold this time dearly.

Thankyou all for your support,it was very helpful in a very difficult time.

A lot of other family members have been here all day with me but it's going to be another long night and I'm exhausted having not slept for 36 hrs.

The old bugger isn't going without a fight it seems.I suppose it's that fighting spirit that saw that generation survive the war and he hasn't complained once.

. Been there done it,, just be strong for yourself and the person your with. Behave how you both always would do , it's not easy and I really feel for you, hope you get through this ok as next comes the grieving and that is not nice . Xxx big hugs and take care
