"Hello. Any idea how much it is replace a clutch and dual mass fly wheel, for an Audi 2.0ltre TDI 2004, with 106k miles. Getting quotes that range from £800 from Mr Clutch to £1500 from Audi/VAG specialist. An independent is asking £1000. Advice is welcome." Anything from £800 to £1500.

"It also may not need the DMF doing, they often don't but garages like telling people they do. Sometimes, they invoice you for one and don't even fit it." Will get DMF changed anyway as they have to strip the engine down to get to it anyway. So might as well get both completed. Plus it comes as part of clutch kit. Save hassle down the line with the crank shaft and vibrations.

"Just had new DMF on my alfa 159 2.4 ti £800 , clutch £250 , fitting £500 . Diesels are not cheap ! Back to petrol after this one " It's a big job on the Alfa, loads has to come off before you can free the gearbox, including the exhaust and the front subframe needs dropping. Thats why I had a garage do mine, I couldn't face doing it on my drive in December...

"What the hell is a DMF? " Dual Mass Flywheel. All modern diesels ave them to reduce vibrations from the crank.

"Can't beat the old Cavs before the pot type flywheel, don't even need to jack it up, done in an hour. Modern cars are going backwards."

" Modern cars are going backwards." That sounds like a gearbox problem

"Yes my brother told me all this as it was him that did the job . He works at a Italian car repair garage . Would never entertain doing it on the drive , just to big and an extremely heavy job . The days of me getting on the floor and humping gearboxes are over . Thank god " I did the oil cooler on mine a couple of weeks ago, it's just a case of undoing four bolts and replacing like for like. Trouble is the whole front end of the car has to come off to do it because two of the bolts are hidden away!

The 1.9 has the Vauxhall M32 box and it's made of chocolate!
