Circumstantial guesswork, but I think you may be right.

Considering the loss of his father and Parliamentary seat this year, it makes you wonder if, possibly, he ran out of reasons to live.

Time will tell.

Bye bye, Chat Show Charlie.

Agreed. No age at all.

He was one of the few politicians who were genuinely decent and very, very human.

We were on the way to the woods with the dogs this morning when we heard the news and we both shed a tear.

God Bless

Gary

He was one of the few and best common sense mp's... Brilliant local mp and a leader of conviction

One of the few who voted against the Iraq war, the one lib dem mp who was against the coalition

He was one of the those who had a brilliant empathy with those who he was representing and did it in basic language that we could all understand

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

He came across as a proper conviction politician, sensible and likeable. He even did a good turn on HIGNFY without having to be a buffoon.

He also had one of the wittiest lines when he said his party was the only one led by a trained killer but that Mrs. Thatcher was self-taught.

RIP

He was most of the things people above have said of him. A genuinely good man.

There's a corner in Tennent's Bar where he and some chums would congregate, especially during his spell as Rector at Gilmorehill. Ferocious arguments mixed with much hilarity.

If I were still a drinking man, I'd raise a Glenlivet to his memory.

He'll be missed.

Sad news indeed. They played his Hyde Park speech against the invasion of Iraq this morning. I'd forgotten what a well thought through and (as it turned out) highly prophetic thing it was.

He'll be sadly missed, one of the good ones. My friend who lives in Cannich, Beuly voted for him in the election because of the man he was and despite all his family voting SNP. He had respect from people across the voting spectrum.

Whenever there's a news story like this, you see various worthies falling over themselves to say something nice about the departed...

In *this* case, the sentiment appears to be genuine.

This thread should get more responses than the Tony Blair one

A decent man who lived according to his own convictions. He was every bit a Liberal in the old sense and was a victim of the farce that his party became. He will be sorely missed by the radical centre.

There are a dying breed of politician that are in it for one reason only, to represent the people that gave them their votes.

Charles Kennedy was most certainly one. It is a shame that there are so few like him.

He will be missed in that world but more by his family, such a sad ending for such a great human being.

Needless to say Salmond is already trying to politicise his death

"Charles Kennedy’s ‘heart was not in’ the Better Together campaign against Scottish independence, Alex Salmond has said.

The former Scottish first minister described Mr Kennedy as “an extremely generous human being” who had “the common touch”.

But he added that he did not believe Mr Kennedy’s support for Scotland remaining in the United Kingdom was wholehearted and that he would have been more at home defending membership of the European Union."

I am sure many more will capitalise on what they think someone no longer around would have said, if they had said it.

As if Salmond's comments weren't bad enough, an SNP official has resigned after an online campaign against the late Charles Kennedy in the run-up to the general election.

Brian Smith, who was convener of the SNP Skye and Lochalsh branch, posted abusive messages about the former Liberal Democrat leader on Twitter.

He described Mr Kennedy, whose funeral takes place today, as a “quisling” and a “d*unken slob” in the tweets and sent more than 130 of them, the Daily Mail reported.
