Just thinking out loud

Other than prostitution, can anyone think of anything which is illegal but law enforcement turn a blind eye too?

Far from proud of it, but a family member used to work as a receptionist in a brothel. As I understood it, as long as the girls were of age and not illegal, then the Police were not interested.

I cant think of any other activity or market which is illegal but not heavily enforced. I accept you see people getting prosecuted from time to time but it doesn't seem often.

There's lots of laws that are no longer enforced and were never repealed. I think it's still law that a motor vehicle must not cross a level crossing at a speed exceeding 5mph, obviously it's not enforced as it's ridiculous and dangerous.

I do believe Tony Blaire started an illegal war which resulted in many deaths

Have to say, I dont tend to experience many probs as A TGirl in public. And dont know many (if any) racist friends.

I think a lot of the problem is caused by how you relate to others,as to wether you are accepted, if that makes sense.x

Think even a forensic scientist would have a slight problem identifying cocaine in a night club by sight. Think the DPP would not consider a 60% conviction possibility feasable in the case of an arrest. You would be pretty safe with even a poor defence barrister

I understand what you mean , one example I would use is how lots of people especially younger people use the term gay as a derogatory term. One of our kids said he didn't want to wear something as it " looked gay" although he is only 8 years old he was still told it was not acceptable to use the term as he did and it was explained to him why.

i got fined £75 for dropping a cigar butt (degradable) out my car window while stuck in traffic....so yes, these things do get enforced from time to time... or maybe the community copper just didnt like the look of me or the jeep or whatever

What about just for dropping ash though? I'm guessing cops would find gathering microscopic dust as evidence not to be worth it.

I feel your pain - I drive cars, LGV, and ride motorcycle and MTB - I try to do all those things (not at the same time obviously), responsibly and safely. I see outrageous behaviour and lack of competence/consideration from all quarters.

Riding a bicycle on the pavement is actually an offence under section 72 of the Highways Act 1835 as amended by section 85(1) of the Local Government Act 1888.

Whilst there is no exemption to this law for children, the police have always used common sense and discretion in exercising their powers over children cycling on the pavement. Very young children should not be expected to cycle on the road. Children under the age of 10 are below the age of criminal responsibility, hence they cannot be prosecuted for criminal offences. Enforcement of cycling on pavements is usually dealt with by a fixed penalty notice, which cannot be issued to anyone under the age of 16

Not really illegal... but certainly hypocritical... is the government's drugs policies. As far as I'm concerned these should be implemented on a completely logical and scientific footing... instead of giving special treatment to two socially acceptable drugs...alcohol, that usually increases the odds of violent behaviour, and smoking, that's possibly one of the most addictive and most harmful of all drugs. It's totally ridiculous to render illegal, drugs which are less problematical than those two, based upon issues of social and personal wellbeing. We should just measure social effects and personal health effects, draw a line, and anything under it is legal and anything over it isn't... if that renders tobacco illegal and lsd legal then so be it

How long does it take to bio-degrade? People drop things that do bio-degrade but don't realise how long it takes. A common one is banana skins, which take two years to degrade. An apple core takes two weeks. A cigarette butt takes between 18 months and 10 years depending on the conditions and where it has been dropped.

Litter is litter.

Fair comment, but banana skins and apple cores are organic, they will decay naturally supporting the whole biodiversity cycle thingy.

Tailor made ciggy butts are acrylic.

Cigar butts are organic, as are rollup (made with rice paper and no filter) butts.

Ash is an organic compound with beneficial effects on soil and the whole bio-regeneration thingy.

Excessive waste of any kind in inappropriate places is unwelcome.
