Are yo a slave to brand products such as heinz or Kellogs or (in these tough times) have you resorted to supermarket own brands??

i dont mind saving a few penies on most things but certain things have to be brand products - for example, bought some tesco's own the other day and it is rank!!!!!!

Tomato soup must be Heinz, stuffing must be paxo and ony sage and onion!!!!

i can compromise on most things but not food.a lot of cheap food is inedable so if it go's in the bin its a false economy.i'm a sucker for bogof offers though ive got enough washing up liquid to last a yr

and ive just brought 8 boxes of pg tips 160+ 50% extra free a bargain at 3 quid a box

lol, my dad was a bit of a brand man, but mom used to keep the packages and refill them with supermarket stuff.

She was a shite cook so the old man was none the wiser.

Well, he never let on that he knew what her game was

They've both gone now, but Kate and I regularly have a right old chuckle remanissing about the things they did and said.

only thing i always buy brand is malibu and the to go in it. Everything else is shop made. For me it is a cost situation so always go for tesco own or whatever company. I would rather go without malibu than buy the cheaper one and often do go without. Not bought real baileys in ages as iceland s own is lovely and five pound a bottle.

All companies have what they call "generic" foods, which means its all the same but some companies will pay that little bit more for better packaging and slightly better products.

I worked for many years in mcvities and worked in the chemical area and where they also came up with new products.

All biccies were the same but different packing except one.

M and s.

They call the shots in what happens in the factory and have the best chocolate. best colour of biccy etc.

So if you want the best...and no i dont work for them. lmao

M AND S are the ones in everything

We dreaded a visit because even our overalls had to be pristine. and when working with all the chemicals that go in ya biccies, well its a bit difficlt to stay clean

Some of the "own brand" stuff is very good, but some is awful!

We have learned by trial and error which is which, and have differing tastes too. Jayne will not eat any (tinned) spaghetti unless its Heinz, whereas I am not as fussy. I prefer Heinz beans, but most others are ok too, but I will eat most cereals.

The one thing that we are both fussy on is bread.

Now I never tried Ambrosia but that has sure put me off trying it

I have to say that a lot of what I have been getting lately is store brand as that is what the budget allows...I was pleasantly surprised to taste that sainsbury's value cream cheese taste exactly like philly...was so shocked...lol

What ever chemicals are put in is done so for shelf life etc.

If you were to bake your own bread, you wouldnt be able to freeze it and get a nice loaf after you defrost.

Things like amonnia are put in biscuits.

And the low fat ones have a fat replacement which wont come off ya hands unless using stuff to get oil off .some chemicals come in cans with scull and crossbones on to denote how dangerous they are ....

You would be suprised at what your eating.

Just be aware that own brands are not always the cheapest.... Always check the price per gramm/litre/kilo between major brands and own lable.

Another thing to check is are two packs of say 500g products cheaper than a 1kg pack? Often you will find two packs are cheaper!

Has to be Gold Blend coffee.....Heinz baked beans....Hellmans Mayo....not so fussy over own brand white rum/vodka if I am putting a mixer with it....but has to be JD....

don't buy that much supermarket stuff but when I do it's usually co op and I got for the two for ones, specials and own brands, but always check prices as sometimes branded can be cheaper.

Prefer to cook real food. Tastier, keeps me outa mischief, it's healthy and economical. Been baking my own bread for a while now, bldy great.

Me too, never been one for microwave miracles when I have the time to cook from scratch. It tastes better and you know what you put in it... so to speak

I don't consider myself a slave to brands, as I frequently shop at Lidl's and Aldi's and hunt for bargains!

However, the following are non-negotiable:

Mayo has to be Heinz, the original

English Mustard has to be Coleman

French Mustard has to be Maille

Coke has to be Coca Cola the original

Washing up liquid has to be Fairy the original

... to name a few!

I will usually avoid the really cheap basic stuff, but find that the next level up of own brand stuff is usuallly OK, I love tesco's version of frosties for example.

Although I wont drink own brand -it's Pepsi or Coke Cola for me, although since moving toScotland I have discovered barrs....mmmm

I used to work in a food factory and the only difference between Tesco own brand mustard and harrods mustard was..........5lb of salt per cook pot.

The mustard powder ect were all the same bar the salt content!

So sorry but you are just buying the name!

I am a slave to them, i buy all supermarket own brand frozen veg, half the price of name brands and taste the same to me. I hate heinz beans, much too bean flavoured for me, on the other hand i only buy asdas smartprice ones, cant stand anybody elses. There are some things i wouldnt, some of the ready made meals are just awful, barely any real substance at all but then in your question did you mean the supermarket brands or their really cheap brand? I wouldnt buy some of the supermarket really cheap brand cereals cos they are absolutely awful

I'm a big fan of ASDA cheap cider. It's a bit rough around the edges, not quite as good as Gaymers / Bulmers, but it does the same job - gets you pissed then banned from the forums for a week - yep, marvellous stuff is ASDA cider

Some own brands I buy, some 'big' brands I buy, but aldi's lidle's etc have just as good stuff and cheaper, it can pay if you have time to shop around and not totally rely on the tesco's delivery.

I won't compromise on my twinings teas or proper coffee..... whenever my ex husband told me to cut back on the house keeping money I always bought the cheapest crappiest coffee powder for him.... he always relented!

I like fresh food and have it all the time.I'm Not into processed food at all as grew up eating it , but times where hard then as not alot of money. I do like own brand pure orange juice and biscuits but not much else is that good thT I have tried. I remember when about 7 years old and we had supermarket cornflakes, well they where just like cardboard and taste horrid. Still remember it to this very day as I was made to eat the lot

A recent news story in Ireland stated the increase by consumers purchasing own brands has jumped from 7% 4 years ago to 37% this year, it's a sign of the recession!

I'm a big fan of the German Retailers, most of the products they sell are of brilliant quality - even surpassing the market leaders.

It's a personal choice, do you stay with what your akin too? the famous brands handed down on hearsay from your family/ stuff that your used too?

Or go all-out and try something new?

It's a bit like "Swinging" really.

Try it, you'll enjoy and reap the benefits, financially - about the shopping I mean!

I'm joking, ASDA is brill.... we had to drive to UK for a funeral.... once it was over, we hit ASDA in Newcastle..... the CAR was full too the brim, my poor mother who is 70 had a box on her knee the entire way from Newcastle to Stranraer.

We never buy Baileys now, Carolans is lovely in coffee, which is how we use it, cheaper and twice the size too.

I've been going to Lidl for aout a year and some of the stuff is better than well known brands - the soups are better than Heinz for example and there are certain things that I only get from there - I do go to Asda and Morrisons too but in the main stay with Lidl. Oh and the fresh meat there is super too. Z

Can't help a bargain me....rock bottom prices for top notch bum paper....

Well there was nothin in the boot....

Did the same with washing powder and tea bags when they were half price earlier in the year..... haven't bought either for months !
