Don't shout at it,it will think you are showing concerns too. When one of our puppies barks at passers by,I pull him down from the window and give him his teddy. Distraction, the same technique I used for my children.

When we had puppy training classes for our collie we were told to get an empty plastic litre milk carton and put in 2/3 penny coins thus making a rattle when the dog barks shake it hard once. Do it every time they bark until they learn... Didn't take long for ours to learn and I only have to pick it up now and he sits and looks at me as if to say ' oh ok I wont then '

Give it a try

I used to look out with them and soothe them by rubbing their ears. After a wile if they heard a noise they would come to me or just look out at associate the noise with normality and being soothed

How old is the dog?

Ours grew out of it after about six months and now only barks if the doorbell goes or she hears the back gate opening.

The thing is you want them to bark at strange noises at night or when you're out. You just want them to stop when you tell them to.

In the wild, dogs are taught hunting by their mothers. If they make a noise, mother GENTLY holds their mouths closed. So one bark, say "good boy" for alerting you to something unusual. More barks, be like mum - hold his mouth closed and say "good boy" again for being quiet. Takes time and patience. The dog is over-excited so you must be calm and placid to show that everything is OK.

One method is teaching them to talk on demand first, and really praise them. Then once mastered get them to talk then say quiet. They seem to learn this easier then when barking they understand quiet.

Also barking on demand can be useful at times.

Not heard of the bottle before, will try this with our cavalier King Charles who is thick and can't learn the above

If she's never been to your house before then she will be worried and barking at all the new noises.

My dog was well trained but every time we moved house we'd have a couple of weeks of barking until she got used to everything.

I trained one of mine to bark on command as he was a gob shite - still couldn't get him to shut up when he was going schitzoid at something. If any of them bark now I tell them thank you that's enough and they shut up

Spray bottle + water = no barking dog. My parents have two barky dogs, they will bark at fresh air! Freaked me out staying there on my own haha. They use a spray bottle and when ever they bark for Bad reasons they get a mist in their faces.

bollocks. The dog is anxious - it probably has separation anxiety, so shutting its mouth isn't that nice.

A simple "ah ah" command, consistently, every dam time it barks, by everyone will work. But seen as you are dog sitting, means this will not work as other people just wont correct the behaviour.

Try buying one of these on Flea bay:

Ultrasonic Repeller Bark stop Training Obedience Device Sound Trainer UK.

£13.70 and they work brilliantly (the white ones). The untrasonic is brilliant, doens't take long at all for the dog to realise that the barking is wrong. There is a squeal option too but the ultra sonic is great. It would be best to do it while you are there first off.

And please don't spray any bloody water in it's face. It is really quite a cruel way to handle and train an animal that. Even the ultrasonic collar is a bit lazy, but it is less invasive than a water bottle/pistol, and a hell of a lot more effective.

I know a neighbour has a yapping puppy, they have resorted to using the vibrating collar, every time the dog barks the vibrations stop it dead in its tracks.

Not sure if it is cruel or not , but very effective.

My parents had tried everything and it's the only thing that works for their dogs. Not cruel at all as it's a mist not a cup of water. I did it with our cat as well as nothing worked with him either Not if he sees the spray bottle he knows to stop.
