I don't mean men specifically - more the human race - just heard on the radio that a stag that is probably the largest wild animal in England has been shot dead by a private hunter. Why? What an absolute waste. Z

The stag was not shot by a poacher. Some country estates need controlled culls of deere and while this was not mentioned in the report, there could be a whole number of reasons why this stag was singled out for culling, over population, overly aggressive animal, illness, even mistaken identity. I suppose a stray bullet might be the answer, but that would be very highly unusual. "Proffesional" stag hunters strive to be 100% with each round they use as stray shots are downright bloody dangerous given the calibre of weapon being used

Forgot to add. Country estates make a huge amount money from these culled animals by selling the meat for the Xmas market. You`d be bloody amazed at how far people will drive to get their favourite estate venison!

i hate blood sport with a passion, why is it ok to hunt foxes but not fight dogs? do the rich and high classes have some sort of rights over animal life that us mear mortals dont?

before anyone replies to that i DO NOT want dog fights made legal i want fox hunting banned

people who kill for trophy's are just a bit wierd, most of us go to the gym, play football even go bings god help us lol for fun and to pass time, theres something seriously wrong with someone who wants to kill another life and stick its head on the walls in the name of sports

kill rabbits cause they over produce

we kill chickens to eat and humans are highly over poplulated

surely if it was culled for meat there are hygene laws governing the killing. How would it be see if farmers took to shooting chickens, sheep and cows for meat?

This magnificent animal was in the national papers a week or two ago saying he was the biggest in the country, bigger than Scottish red deer because of the milder climate of southern England.

It was also pointed out that his location was a "closely guarded secret" due the danger of him being trophy hunted.

And hey presto, less than a month after this report, some allegedly foreign trophy hunter has indeed got his wish and butchered this animal for his own pride.

To the OP: i agree, makes you sick.

And he would be too old at 12 years to make good meat, yet was in tip top condition to rule his ladies and see off his competitors. What a shame, as inferior stags with less superior genetics will now be able to breed so the bloodlines of future generations will be adversely affected too.

I hate cruelty to animals, hate it with a vengance, I hate fox hunters and would gladly hunt them.

But, I have taken part in Herd culling in the Highlands of Scotland, this is done under strict regulations and animals are culled to protect the herd.

As someone has said, culling herds helps the rest of the herd, sick, lame, old, aggressive animals are killed quickly and humanely instead of being allowed to suffer in pain, or be singled out by other animals and attacked causing more injury and pain.

Oh yes I have no doubt that someone made a lot of money from what happened to the animals culled and the trophies, but that was not my concern, I only cared for the welfare of the animals at the time and for my own personal training.

"If you must shoot it, do so once its useful life has passed, but before it is inedible" ie don't shoot it for sport.

Where's the sport in shooting the biggest unarmed taregt you can find, anyway? Mayfly hunting - now there's a test of sporting markmanship....

Dis any one catch this being debated on Radio 2 earlier - apparently the meat is not good at rutting so won't be eaten - it doesn't seem that it was part of a cull - someone paid to kill this animal specificaly - i know the estate will have made a load of money and they can plough that back in to the estate - it wasn't overly old or aggressive - it was a magnificent creature and some limp dicked twerp with a lot of money decided that he was going to slaughter it in cold blood for a bit of sport, those massive antlers on his wall won't make up for his inadequency as a man however. He should be pitied - I still think it's a waste of a life whatever the arguments for it. Z

I simply do not get the idea of hunting for pleasure. If an animal is sick - kill it. If you live in Russia where winter temperatures reach minus 40 and you need its fur to survive, I can accept that.

Hunting for the pleasure of what people refer to as a "sport" - won't get my vote.

Poachers don`t normally shoot deere. They use big dogs to bring deere dowwn and they are totally indescriminate in what they bring down be it young, old, in calf etc. If the deere is no good to them, it`s left where it is and not nesessarily completely dead. I`ve heard of this happening more times than I care to remember.

Some may see the shooting as unneccessary, I see it being shot as the lesser of tow evils and a much better option than having poachers dogs tear it apart.

There could have been any number of reasond the stag was culled, possibly to let new blood strains come up in the herd or as previously stated it could have been illness. The only people who ould give the legitimate reason for the animal being shot are probably the the head gamekeeper and the landowner, they would have the final say on taking the shot if it was a private hunt as these guys decide what deer can or cannot be shot.

Apparently the stag in question was 12 years old and was highly likely to starve to death over the winter. Its amazing how different news reports can put a different slant on the same thing.

A stag is in it's prime at the age of twelve, they start to lose their incisor teeth around the age of Fifteen/Sixteen.

And that is when they suffer a drop in health over the winter.

The real reason that this stag was culled is probably because a younger large Red has been spotted rutting in the same locality, if a gamekeeper or huntmaster witnesses a new kid on the block starting to establish itself they will often cull the older animal to allow natural domination take it's course.

But it's definetly not for meat, venison is at it's best from four to five years maturity.

Harem management in wild deer is a real art, on Exmoor there are gamekeepers and huntmasters who know every wild deer within a ten mile radius and are the best people to decide when a deer needs culling for the good of the herd.

The rubbish in the papers about bloodline being lost is so badly informed and misleading to the readers, at the age of Twelve a Hart has it's best breeding years well behind it.

You are absolutely right and this is really useful when I am teaching communication. I get groups to read and discuss the same story from different slants and then re-organise the groups to exchange info. What a discussion ensues. Just goes to show.

Seriously thought, I'm generally against blood sports, but sometimes the issues around them are complex. Grouse hunting, for example, results in lots of land being left as moorland for the hunting, thus being a huge benefit to many forms of wildlife.

Fox hunting is just cruel, I'd have more respect for the hunters if they just admitted they hunted for pleasure rather than making weak excuses about keeping the fox population down!

I'm not sure how stag hunting works but I believe it's heavily licensed and they only shot those unlikely to survive the winter, thus ensuring younger, fitter stags have more food.

Sometimes there is more to the story I guess...
