Internet Explorer And opera are other options. might be a faulty driver or something. If you are still able to restore to factory settings (you may have a disc) it maybe worth starting afresh tbh. I doubt it has much to do with the browser.

Is there a page error message, or could you describe how it occurs? Does it try loading, but not finish etc?

Blimey. XP is very out of date now.

It was superseded on 30th January 2007 by Windows Vista - which was shit.

Next came Windows 7 in 2010 and now we have Windows 8 (which is awful) with the release of Windows 10 due to be launched in July.

The best solution I could offer would be to upgrade to Windows 7.

I fairly recently got a new laptop, (Argos £299) but unfortunately it came pre-loaded with Windows 8.

I've installed a piece of software that lets gives me the Win 7 Interface instead of the hateful new Metro interface.

Firstly. Absolutely nothing wrong with XP I use it in both lappy and desktop and it flys. I suspect it could be a driver issue or an extension for chrome.

Does the can work with other applications ?

Also update google chrome to make sure it's got the latest drivers / extensions. ( in the settings page )

I think it might be the build of the laptop, the cam doesn't work on anything, and it won't let me install the Garmin driver to upload my rides on my gps,

Have you searched for the latest driver on the www? Just input PC make model and search for the driver. Or if you know the name of the built in webcam ( this should be listed in the device manage, if it's there you could also ridge click and "update driver". My suspicion is that as it was a works PC they may have disabled the webcam.

Good luck. Paul

The Opera browser - a free download, has always been great. As others state, you could also get Internet Explorer - even if it was once installed and was removed, before you got it from work.

I'd try the small things, before considering putting a new operating system on your laptop, ie trying different web browsers. I can't post the link to Opera browser, as it's against site rules, but a web search will show it.

8 is a fantastic os after you install classicshell, useless before,

If the laptop is ex work it may still be domain connected, do you have to press alt ctl del to login

Check by right clicking my computer and goto properties and look for the computer name tab, will either say workgroup which has open access, or a domian name which means it could have a group policy stopping it installing drivers\plugins

Does the cam work in any other programs like skype

IE wont work as you can only install upto version 8 on xp,

v8 isn't supported anymore so sites are not coded to work with it,

"Right Click' the "My Computer" icon.

Click "Manage".

Then click on "Device Manager".

Expand the view and see if there are any yellow 'question mark" symbols in the list.

That'll give you a good starting point towards sorting out the problem.

Forgot to say. As a last resort could always run "return to factory" settings. It will mean you have to run quite a few windows updates and install some lost software.

By the sound of it unable to install Garmin drivers etc it is still being controlled by the company's security policy to stop staff using it for personal use,

Without the domain or local admin credentials your only options will be to use what it will let you or re-install windows,

After reinstall it will be working as a normal laptop though

Be wary of putting windows 7 or above on it. If it's an older laptop there may not be supporting drivers. Having said that you may have similar issues getting xp ones now! Either way a fresh install is the best advice I'd give. Also I use cams on Google Chrome without an issue. I have been lazy and not read the whole thread so apologies if someone has already said this.

Tell the lazy shits to put 7 on it for you, haha

They should have the admin details to take it off the domain, will be sorted then.

We've bombarded, possibly overloaded the Op - but think she's called it a day till Monday.

If they would slap Windows 7 on it, as suggested above, it could be great for years to come. You would get a free Windows 10 version, after it comes out - if you chose to. XP is not supported now, so could become a risk over time, for viruses. Your laptop would need to be compatible with 7, but a free check can be done online to see that it is.
