Being Spoiled

Has anyone else had to adjust to worse living standards than their parents? I grew up in a 6 bedroom house built by my dad on an average wage, my neighbour next door built the same sort of thing on a similar salary. I've had my own little ( it feels that way) 2 bed flat for a few years and now my mate's just bought his own 3 bed ex council house and according to him its too small for him and his partner even though they have no kids. Does anyone else feel a little shame given the way they grew up?

Yeah I had more growing up, a house that was too big, and was spoiled.

I'm not ashamed though, I have a small flat with my son and we have what we need, I enjoy the little things in life and am that more thankful for what I do have.

Health and family mean a lot more to me than the size of a house or things that can be bought. Material things mean nothing.

Materialism has a lot to answer for over the last few years, today's generation have learnt a hard lesson re excessive borrowing so they can have it all now rather that save and buy or be happy with what you have got.

The banks did not help buy throwing easy credit a people who had no realistic chance of paying it back.

No I don't feel shame, having less materially than some people is nothing to feel ashamed about. I'd say we have a slightly lower living standard and disposable income than both our parents but we spend it diffferently and enjoy our lives more I think

I think your standard of living is so much more than the size of your house.

Often people work so hard to attain things, they lose sight of the important things in life.

My attitude changed during the funeral of my third member of staff before I was 30 - I realised I worked in an industry where men rarely had long, healthy retirements, and changed my life accordingly.

So don't feel guilty about the things you don't have, feel guilty about the moments you miss.

I don't measure my standard of living by the size of my house. I could live in a shoe box and be better off than some people living in a beautiful house in the country. My parents didn't own any property but we had a big council house crammed with people. Best years of my life where family are concerned. I have the same house as them with less people and no happiness. If we're talking how much money we have spent I've had much more spare money than they did and an ex who liked to spend it. Can't take it with you can you.

My parents married at young age and both had good jobs so they're standard of living was fine even with 3 kids. They are not rich by any means. Mum was able to give up work when she had kids as that was all she wanted. Get married and have kids and be a mum.

I didn't grow up spoilt, but didn't go without either.

Having grown up myself I'd say I don't by any means live as comfortable as my parents did.

Single mum of 1 child always working PT, most of the time trying to make ends meet.

I moved from a house to a massionette and couldn't be happier.

I don't live in shame.

I come from a very modest background and unless something spectacular happens I am most likely unable to equal even that in my lifetime.

It's a bit disheartening but as long as you carve our your own niche and live life as you want I wouldn't say it's in any way shameful.

If you really want something you have more opportunity these days to go out and get it then you have at most periods in time so...

No. I was one of six in a three bedroomed house. A tight squeeze but it was home
