I quit

Mostly in GU24

Some of you may remember my problems with colleagues conversing in a foreign language at work. I quit when the management failed to adequately deal with it.

So I say cheers to all as I sit in the sun, poorer but having learned a lesson and considerably more relaxed!

Tomorrow is another day, I'm not defeated and I'll be trying to find a job starting tomorrow.

i applaud your honesty. that is my pet hate in the workplace. makes u feel very secluded. im sure you will find a new place of employment soon. good luck

I think you've made the right decision OP. I didn't post on the original thread as I thought this would have to be the ultimate outcome, but I don't ever like suggesting someone gives up a job.

Would have to be pretty extreme case to quit your job in this climate. I have experience of a similar situation. To many of my colleagues, Welsh is their first language and English their second. When they are in a conversation of which I am not involved, they usually speak in their first tongue as this is what tends to come naturally. I suppose it's handy for them if they want to discuss something personal.

I did the same last July, quit work one afternoon and started my own business after a few months off. I haven't looked back...I sit in the garden in the sun working on my laptop and think of my old staff sweating their bits off in the office and thank god I did what was best for me. Good luck with your new search x

Maybe I'm too thick skinned. I'd much rather get on with my job than be concerned with what language others are speaking. If it was causing an issue and the manager wasn't doing anything then I'd have gone over their head.

It was worse than them just speaking in their own language, it was them not asking me to go with lunch with them, no coffee brought to me and the coffee was free! Not only that, the other member of staff was a complete control freak. I couldn't do a bloody thing without her shouting at me - literally shouting at me.

She was the accountant, me the secretary. Different jobs, yes? Nope, despite my 30 years' experience I had to do exactly as she told me. Problem is, I'm an independent Western woman, no shrinking violet.

Then we were told off for the office being "drab" and the size of the s in the garden I thought "I'm no skivvy". I'm a medical secretary not a bloody cleaner!

That and the boss was just bloody awkward. She wouldn't answer her mobile, she would read emails but not reply to them. Then I'd book a patient in for surgery and she'd shout at me because I hadn't charged enough. But there again, she didn't volunteer any info when she put the patient on the waiting list.

A contrary so and so. Cannot be doing with it. I also can't work with somebody who does not communicate. When you're dealing with sensitive people you need information quick, not next Friday!

I also got the distinct impression I was basically a paid slave, working with three pushy characters who are just what they are. I had my doubts before I started, from past experiences I should really have known. It's not about their race AT ALL, it's about how they treated me.

Lesson learned: onward and upwards

I think I'd have secured another job first, or had some other plan, but yes, sounds like you're better off out of it. Every time I've been in a bad work situation, I've just ignored it whilst getting another job and then left.
