Ovett and Coe was a fantastic rivalry.

To me the best rivalry ever was Visinitini vs Roche in the Giro D'Italia in the 80's

The Rangers and Celtic rivalry is by far the most intense given the religious and historic side of things. I'm a Sunderland fan and our rivalry with Newcastle is intense but falls short of the Old Firm. It's not on these shores but the most intense football rivalry I've ever seen is in Argentina, Boca vs River Plate. That's crazy. All to do with wealth and affluence.

I'd agree with that. I love Glasgow and have many good friends there but the only time I've been there on a derby day it was a horrible and slightly intimidating atmosphere. No city should be proud of that

With regards to the Old Firm game, there's probably a shitload more fighting at an Edinburgh derby than there is in Glasgow, the Police presence is a fraction of the size so they've got more of a chance to batter each other. Although back in the non segragated 100,000 plus capacity days of Hampden, this was not the case.

Newport Pagnell

Football rivalries are mostly based on local bragging rights and sometimes get out of hand. Most are passionate and intense.

However, Celtic v Rangers has religious undertones and West Ham v Millwall stems from the general strike amongst the dockers in 1926. This gives these two the edge on all others in the UK as it's about more than football.

People living in England don't realize how bad the rivalries between old firm fans can get. It's partly because the media south of the border don't report Scottish stories as well as they should. Because of my job I have had to work with a number of people who have murdered others because of this match and no it's nothing to be proud of. The charity nil by mouth was set up by the girlfriend and family of a young Celtic fan with his whole life in front of him who's crime was to walk past a pub in east end of Glasgow wearing a Celtic scarf after leaving Celtic park. He had just finished his exams and passed all of them only to have his life snubbed out by a sword weilding maniac. His head was almost severed tragically the brutes father had done something similar in his youth. This is all to commonplace in Scotland but this charity works to educate people on sectarianism on both sides and to bring them closer that is something to be proud of
