Zapain is just not cutting it for me today. Does anybody have any good techniques or alternatives to medicine to suggest as a coping strategy please?

Hereabouts

Concentrate on breathing for a few minutes. Distract yourself by doing a puzzle or something. TV doesn't help because it's not keeping your brain active. Don't do anything strenuous. Keep warm but not too warm. I have this problem every day. No painkillers work for me at all so I just have to grin and bare it. Smiling helps

East Yorkshire

I find it works better taking the paracetamol and codeine separately and alternate one of each every 2 hours rather than taking both in one drug every 4 hours. I've also recently been told about the tapping technique and actually find it helps. Google EFT there's lots of info.

Failing that it's a case of moving onto stronger painkillers but I won't until it's completely unbearable

Depends greatly on what's causing the pain.

When I'm suffering from extreme pain I do more, I move about, clean ect. I find if I sit or lay down the pain intensifies so I keep my mind and body active. Not ideal but that's just one of the ways I cope as painkillers do nothing for me even the really strong ones ie. Morphine.

Sometimes a nice hot bath can help also. X

Only things I could suggest is doing something to totally distract your mind.

I used to get unbearable toothache whilst waiting to get a tooth sorted - nerve was pretty much exposed.

I used to stick some headphones on and go mess about with my DJ/producing equipment and turn the volume up. Normal painkillers didn't do much to help

Central

Feel free to mix pain killing drugs of differing types - all subject to their maximum dose per day, and ensure none are incompatible.

OK to mix - NSAIDs, such as asprin or ibuprofen

with

Paracetamol

and with codeine

You're already getting a Para/codeine mix, so you could add an NSAID too.

I don't find a difference about when they're taken, individually or spaced out.

Depending on where the pain is, you may be able to use a topical analgesic, which would act locally. Again, all maximum dosages are essential to be followed.

Don't take any pain killer that's harmful to you, or causes side effects that are dangerous etc.

Otherwise, for mouth problems, you could try something like orajel, which is something like Benzocaine, which will numb.

If you can cure the root cause of the pain, even better - but think you'd not be writing if you could have done that.

NHS 111 can also give some help, if appropriate.
