Just watching the baby budgies fledging, their parents helping them along.

Is it just nature or do you think there is the parental love us humans feel ?

Central

Its easy to ascribe human traits to animals but Im inclined to think that animals dont have the same emotional make up as humans do. Theirs is likely different and potentially better for them.

Parental bonding is innate, hard wired and a very strong force to ensure survival of the species. Whilst what we view can be moving for us, its likely that we just identify how we would be feeling and project that on to the animal behaviour that we see.

I'm almost certain dogs do feel something like love. Watching how my dog is with my daughter almost proves it to me.

No matter how much you love animals, it is illegal to have sex with them.

It depends on the brain make up and if certain parts are developed and that seems to be linked to the socialising skills of the species-an extension of the basic bonding ability but for the most part they are not human emotions, (excepting perhaps apes etc)

However a snake will never love you, its brain isn't developed enough past kill/survive/breed

Some animals yes definitely feel love for example penguins who once they've found their mate won't mate with anyone else!

Also I think some animals have a certain amount of maternal paternal love for example if you threaten a bear cub mummy or daddy would do everything they can to protect it!

Then you have animals like whales and dolphins who spend there entire lives in a pod with their family!

The love and emotion might not be as complex as humans but they are there!

I think it depends how you define love

to some animals it's just instinct to help their young fly the nest and when they do they go their own way never to be seen again

while some animal groups stay together for life with their young some animal even pair bond for life

I can't help but think that if an animal seeks out a partner and stays with them forever there is some level of love there or their equivalent to it

All animals have been observed showing love in one form or another, romantic love, affection, friendship, unconditional love.

There's even been tests on dogs and other animals to see how their brain works, and some conclusions made from it.

http://www.emory.edu/EMORY_MAGAZINE/issues/2012/summer/of_note/dog.html

And testing on hormones as well, i can't find any links yet, need a brew and more sleep...

I also think that the amount of people who are disgusted at animal abuse, means we have formed a type of love for animals ourselves too.

No, we project our feelings onto others.
