At long last I've got an appointment to have steriod injections to help relieve the pain in my lower back.

I was wondering if any members have had this procedure, if you have, how long before you could get back(no pun intended) to a fairly normal routine?

yes, I have after a lower lumber decompression operation.

I have to tell you that even though they will give you a local its still not very nice. The pain goes only for 3-4 weeks and your back to square one.

You are better off attacking the cause and not just masking the sytems.

Ive got 2 problems one prolapsed disc which is causing sciatica down my left leg and slight arthritis in another. Ive had private chiro/osteo & acupunture treatment which I cant now afford. My GP sorted out 6 physio treatment. These helped short term. The tablets I'm on make me feel like I've smoked a huge joint (not practical when driving)

So its injections first, if these dont help then its an operation

Don`t want to sound too depressing Woody , but sometimes the injections won`t make the pain any better so it`s best to be prepared for that eventuality . Are the injections being done by a Pain Clinic Consultant ?? If not - ask your GP for a referral to one ASAP !!

Its not depressing at all Lipstick. After over 6 years of bearable and the last 6 months of constant excruciating pain, my Consultant said try the injections first. If they give me back some semblence of a normal life then I'll be a happy man.

my partner is due to go in for his injections done under a local 5/11 for help with discs and curvature of the spine. believe it is a painful procedure and if it doesnt work leads to a op

I suffer from tennis elbow and had a very painful injection in June 2009. The pain afterwards went on for a bout 2 days then I was pain free for 6 months. Am now in very bad pain again but can't face the injection again. They also give you atrophy ( loss of fat) and thinning of the skin. Try some alternative therapies maybe?

Really hope it helps your parther Bipussy, I'll be thinking of them. I bet its painful even with a local. Please keep me informed on the outcome

The injections will more than likely be cortisone and should give relief for a while. Sometims almost immediately sometimes after a couple of days its noticible.

I suffered with a nasty shoulder injury for a couple of years, you are only supposed to have 3 of these injections and then no more.

I had an operation in July and whilst it has alleviated some of the problem, I still have a lot of pain which requires swapping between two differnet painkillers on a weekly basis. The up side is I am signed off sick until January.

It sounds like you are going to be in the same boat, ie an operation to remove the disk, if so hope it goes well for you.

Thanks B and K. I've been signed off since just after Easter, which at first was great, but now I'm so feckin bored This may sound strange but I need to go back to work, firstly for my sanity (daytime TV is shite) secondly I'll be going on to half pay soon and thirdly what with the Government spending cuts....

I had it 3 months ago ... the procedure was a snip, bit of a twinge here and there when they put the needle in, otherwise a simple and quick (15mins) procedure.

Whilst the local was doing its job, it was bloody magic - no pain at all. The following day I was in some considerable pain but thereafter things were really great and I felt very positive about the outcome.

Went to see the consultant a few weeks ago telling him that things were great then a few days later it all kicked off again

Apparently it works for some folks and not for others ... for me it's not as bad as it was but it's headed down that road.

Go in with an open mind - you could be one of those for whom it is a 100% success
