Who's face for new £20 note?

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

The public will get to decide on who's face will appear on the new £20. It has to be a nomination from the world of art and design. Plus they must be no longer with us.

The banknote currently features the economist Adam Smith - is it bad I have no idea who he is!

I think Turner must have a good chance.

I was watching about it on the Wright Stuff and someone suggested Beyoncé which would please many men I am sure! She doesn't meet the criteria unfortunately.

So who would you like to see, let's broaden it to anyone living or dead from any genre. Someone who you think deserves that accolade I guess?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Woman's Hour discussed it too.

I'm not sure who I would nominate now.

Good choice and you are right. I think more girls are studying sciences than used to, so it may become more equal one day.

The last person who suggested a woman be on a bank note got death and rape threats via Twitter.

Are we as a nation ready for another female on our currency ?

It's a touchy subject for some.

Other than that, I'm not sure. I'm not very knowledgeable about the world of art. I like David Shepherd's aircraft pictures, though. I'm not sure if I'm inheriting a couple or if my brother has a post it on the back of them.

Robert Watson-Watt, not sure if he'd come under design or not? Invented radar, and given its the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain its appropriate, we'd have been in massive trouble without it.

Could also have Colin Chapman from Lotus, designed some very beautiful and revolutionary cars.

If they're only looking for visual artists there aren't many to chose from... Turner, Constable, Samuel Palmer, Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin lol I'd say probably the greatest is either Turner or William Blake (even though I can't really stomach Blake's work). There is also Richard Hamilton, who some feel invented Pop art, and sculptors such as Henry Moore and Anthony Caro. Personally I would have preferred it if they'd been open to musicians... then I would've liked to have seen Johnny Rotten on it in full punk mode... not that I'm a punk or anything... it would've just been amusing
