Do you FEEL beautiful?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Woman's Hour asked this and the response was a little sad to hear.

I think people don't like to say whether they think they are beautiful in case they are judged as vain. However, the question was whether you feel beautiful.

Do you feel beautiful?

Right now this minute? No.

Hot and sweaty with red, puffy eyes with dark rings round them isn't a good look.

Not on the outside just now, but yes, I have moments of being a beautiful person - inside and out.

Sometimes I feel pretty or sexy. I don't feel beautiful because I know that I'm not.

As my profile says, when it's visible, I'm not beautiful but nor am I a paper bag case. I'm average.

I don't know if I feel beautiful per se but I do feel great. If I'm honest, I can't remember the last time I felt quite so good as I do right now.

Surrounding myself with some good people and their positive energy has really given me a lift and helped restore my faith in myself and my own abilities

No never have found myself beautiful... I believe with makeup that I am attractive in that I can pull out my eye colour using an artistic approach... Until recently I had always rated myself as a 5.5 since losing a wrestling match I've had to change it! Do I feel comfortable with it? nope... Still feel it's too high... I am however comfortable with myself !

I feel attractive rather than beautiful. That's because I have lost lots of weight and am feeling better about myself than I have in a long time. I'm always told I am lovely on the inside. I wish others would see how beautiful they are, both inside and out.

'Beautiful' for me tends to reflect quite feminine characteristics. I don't really have feminine characteristics so it seems the wrong word to use.

I use beautiful to describe some men though, it's not a 'woman' thing.

No, I know I'm not (physically) beautiful by the way people react to me.

Relatively few people are beautiful though, and it brings its own problems, so I'm fine with being average-ish.

Of course, some would say I'm pretty and some would say I'm a munter. It's very much in the eye of the beholder.

My own assessment is that I'm average-ish, not a paper bag case and am sometimes pretty.

I do sometimes feel beautiful. It's usually linked to an emotional state of well-being rather than a visual or physical one. I do often feel pretty though but that's because I listen to a lot of music, which puts me into a bubble all of my own.

My mum constantly reminds me I'm immensely fat. She doesn't say it to me, but she goes on, constantly, about how huge and revolting she is when she's 4-5 dress sizes smaller and 4-5 stones lighter than I am (and a healthy weight for her height).

She's done this throughout my entire life and has been on a perpetual diet. She doesn't understand how this makes me feel bad.

From as far back as I can remember, my father has always told me how beautiful, and wonderful I was. It wasn't that I really understood him at that early age, but I grew up knowing that I was, even down to my surname.

So when I was in my teens and we're all conscious about are looks, I new that i wasn't the most handsome of men, but there was nobody as beautiful as myself.

For me beauty is from within and when someone is beautiful inside, they always shine externally.

neither did mine..however i recognized it as a power struggle of matriarchy, to keep you in your place...i decided the love for my life was more important that the acceptance of anyone, including my mother..this may be a bit deep, and im not saying its easy...but imagine she wasnt here...then how could you feel about yourself...

women should empower each other imo not compete...however enjoying who you are is a first step to overthrowing all negativity thrown at you from the external and the past..i saw it as a bit of a challenge.. but then it helped empower me xx..dont allow it..its them not you xx

I'm sorry yours was mean. Not every Mum is maternal unfortunately. Whatever she said though, that was mean spirited - you are beautiful.

I was lucky. I was just thinking that the day my mum found out there was nothing more they could do for her. I walked into the hospital and she said " How's my beautiful girl."

I've always had quite low self esteem mainly because I spent years being told I am fat and ugly and how no man would ever want me, you hear it enough times it grinds you down and you start to believe it

I'm nowhere near as bad as I used to be, since splitting with my ex I've lots a lot of weight which has done my confidance the world of good

i still have down on myself days but more and more I look at myself and think....you know, he was wrong your actually not that bad and when I go out I think I scrub up quite well

My mum's great and she didn't intend to be mean to me. She just doesn't get how constantly going on about how fat she is (at size 12/14), when I am much, much larger, would make me feel shitty about myself.

My nan was obsessed with weight too and very critical of others, so it's not surprising my mum is as she is. I can't understand though, knowing how my nan's comments affected her, how she can't see how she makes me feel.

At least I don't have kids to pass my neuroses on to.

"I don't know if I feel beautiful per se but I do feel great. If I'm honest, I can't remember the last time I felt quite so good as I do right now.

Surrounding myself with some good people and their positive energy has really given me a lift and helped restore my faith in myself and my own abilities

I think having positive people around you always makes you feel good.

I miss my Mum, I always think that the majority of Mums make their child feel beautiful. To them you are always beautiful!

I don't think my mum has ever made me feel beautiful.

I get how you feel my mum was a wast of skin to but hey look at us now who needs em least that's how I feel x

I think you're beautiful Mr Blade! "

Well of course you do you've met me

"My mum's great and she didn't intend to be mean to me.

At least I don't have kids to pass my neuroses on to."

You don't need to pass anything on to your kids. My own childhood was the most fucked up childhood posibly but my own kids are the most balanced and happyest of any I've seen and are my meaning of life. Anytime I'm down all it takes is a hug of my doughter and the whole worlds right again and I'd quite literally die for both of them...

My mum has always made sure I know I'm intelligent.

I don't need her to make me feel beautiful, (I'm not, and I'm perfectly comfortable with that). It would be nice, however, if she didn't make me feel awful about my weight, constantly.

I don't think I'll ever be able to love my body, whatever I do.

Just where I need to be.

In appearance I don't really take much heed in whether I am beautiful or if people think I am. I would rather be acknowledged for having a beautiful manner. I think everone can have be beautiful whether in appearance or manner. Some just need others to show them.

Thinking about this, it's interesting. I've always been aware that I'm intelligent and comfortable with it. I've always thought it was because it could be tested and proven. My mum always made certain I knew it though, so perhaps it is down to an instilled confidence.

Of course, I've questioned whether the confidence is justified, which is where the testing and proving part comes in.

I believe in my intelligence, my creative thinking skills, my strength and tenacity.

I don't feel beautiful but I feel clever and capable. That's more valuable to me.

"From as far back as I can remember, my father has always told me how beautiful, and wonderful I was.

"

Your inner beauty shines through in everything you do.

Reading the comments on the role parents play in whether we feel beautiful just emphasises how hard we have to work to get that sense of inner love if your parents fail, for whatever reason, to convey that they think you are beautiful. I grew up with my mother telling me I was the ugliest baby ever born. It's not surprising I believed it for a long time.

When I walk into a club, dolled up and can hear my name being called from all directions, people all vying for my attention; yes. I feel beautiful.

Right now. At work. No. I don't. I'm not a beautiful person. It takes a lot of time and effort to get that feeling.

An interesting question whether you feel as opposed to whether you are.

I would say with age I've become a more confident person, accepting of my physical appearance and almost I suppose allowed myself to feel beautiful & it's a great feeling.

I cannot recal either of my parents ever telling me I looked beautiful or complimenting me in anyway, it just wasn't their way....

Tricky question to answer without sounding like a complete narcissist. I think I'm an attractive guy to some people. I'm confident (I'm playing that down, I'm actually awesome), well spoken and have impeccable manners.

As someone pointed out earlier, it's usually in comparison with an idea or someone else looks that makes us feel beautiful/handsome/whatever.

People spend so much time obsessing about the things that make them feel unattractive and forget about the things that do make them attractive.

It might sound cheesy but we are all beautiful/handsome/whatever in our own way. As for me, I'm handsome. Maybe not what you think is handsome or what Disney thinks is handsome or Hollywood heart-throb handsome but I'm handsome.

How can you get to a point where you feel beautiful?

Weight/body shape/size has come up a lot on this thread and I can accept that not having control of your weight/shape/size can be an indication of an inner struggle but I have also learnt that you can't address it in any meaningful way from a place of hating yourself (the core of you).

Would I be happier if I was thinner, given that I am fatter than I have ever been? Maybe I would be but right now I feel beautiful and it has nothing to do with my size.

I do a lot of the time yes, because the people whose opinion on the subject really matters to me often tell me that I am.

"Woman's Hour asked this and the response was a little sad to hear.

I think people don't like to say whether they think they are beautiful in case they are judged as vain. However, the question was whether you feel beautiful.

It is sad that people don't consider themselves beautiful, in my mind ugliness is attached to personality,, I can see beautiful characteristics in almost everyone I've ever met,,, I'm a glass half full kinda girl,, I've met some really ugly personalities with a pretty face

Even when I was 21 and hot as hell I was never vain enough to say I was beautiful. I knew the 'power' I had and did not feel it was based in beauty, but in my 'vibe'.

Happily despite the ravages of time the older I get the more beautiful inside I feel I become, life's hard lessons can put you through a refiners fire for sure, and I strive to grow still.

I don't know if other people would think I'm beautiful but that doesn't really matter to me.

I was listening to "wear sunscreen" while stuck in a huge traffic jam yesterday and the bit about "don't read beauty magazines they will only make you feel ugly" made me nod my head in agreement. I think we encourage self deprecation too much and fail to praise often enough. We don't encourage people to celebrate their good points physical and spiritual without implying that they're conceited or arrogant. This should stop.

There is a world of difference between vanity/conceit/arrogance and self-worth.

This is why my profile and pictures are hidden! I don't see any beauty in the pics, or in the mirror.

I don't feel it or see it in myself ever. I could be paid all the compliments but they mean nothing.

Compliments mean nothing if you don't feel it for yourself. I hope you can one day soon.

I think society needs to stop looking for a better model of themselves and comparing themselves with THAT model.

"Lickety, this thread has had me thinking for a while.

I think we're fed an idea that there must be and a modern western aesthetic seems to have captured many (straightened hair, lightened skin, Barbie proportions). When you look across cultures or even across the centuries you can see there isn't a standard.

The point of this wasn't about a standard to measure yourself against but whether you feel yourself beautiful.

Sometimes I do but not as often as I would like these days. I'm tired all the time lately due to ill health and so have not been making my usual efforts to look as good aesthetically as I would like to. Lucky for me I have a wonderful man who comforts me every day and offers me reassurance that I am beautiful to him even if I don't feel so myself.

I think I'm a nice person though with a kind heart. Beauty comes from within right ?

"I never do. Ive always been overweight with glasses and was bullied a bit at school so Ive never thought I was beautiful.

I don't think I ever will. But I'm ok with that. Ive got by ok the last 35 years. I'm more confident now, with my body but I'll never think im beautiful. I don't hate myself though. Just know that im an average lass.

If average is most of us why can't average be beautiful?

I've spent some time with you and think you are beautiful. That's nothing to do with your gorgeous looks and body but about you beyond those things.

"

Thanks lickety. Means a lot xxx

no matter

I can make people laugh..

I can love people

I can be generous

I am mostly kind Tho sometimes the witch comes out.

I can laugh and poke fun at myself, mainly so it will take the wind out of other peoples sails when they want to knock me.

Guess I am more beautiful on the inside but that is ok.

If I could be bothered /motivate to lose weight I might feel better about myself.
