Been awarded £188.250 compensation in the Mirror hacking trial.

Do you think he will live until the end of the year what with him having all that cash and a drinking habit??

was it a good thing to award him the money knowing he has a drink problem??

I hope he spends it wisely and keeps away from alcohol

I do not rhink his drink issue owt to do with hacking dact is hacking broke the law.

I am not a fan of his but keep in perspective. Because of who he is has received far more support and sympathy than most people with same problems.

You can only do so much then think sod it.

Maybe he'll do what he (allegedly) did when he played at newcastle united: walked into a local newsagents on a housing estate and handed over a big wad of cash, telling the shopkeeper to give free sweets to all the local kids until it was gone.

Slightly off topic, but I found it odd that Arsenal paid £50,000 to help with his medical treatment not long ago.

"It could pay for some therapy. "

this and hopefully his friends and family will recognise this payout as also having a possible negative effect and be there for him..

I don't think that the fact he is an alcoholic should influence whether he gets compensation or not

And speculating that he'll die before the end of the year as a result seems a bit wrong to me

Given the affect they had on his life he deserves every penny, what he may do with it is worrying though, his "friends" will see the sum awarded and maybe come back into his life.

No one has speculated anything, it IS a question.

and here is another question,

why is it that when certain people post a question on here, you seem to stick your head above the parapet and twist it around to try and make it controversial??

The hacking will have been so bad for his mental health at a time of already complex need, hopefully his money will be put to good use. He's had a troubled life, regardless of people's views on if he deserves anything etc.

I grew up with Paul, went to school with Paul, and was his neighbour for nearly 15 years at the height of his Newcastle playing days (Mark), its so sad to see a close friend with mental and massive alchohol problems.I only pray that this money will help him try and get some sort of stability back into his life , but unfortunately I think it may make his problems worse

Perhaps they can relate to his problems through experiences with Tony Adams & Paul Merson?.

Alcoholism is a terrible addicition that affects the rich and the poor and everything in between. People with the addicition will get alcohol whether rich or poor.

The whole experience broke him when he was at a very low point. Deserves every penny he can get.

Great player tarnished by his Spurs days

Seems a bit exccessing to me - especially when you compare it to the compensation the Shepherd's got.

Well if he does the right thing and pays back all the people/clubs who have helped put him through rehab after rehab, then he should just about have enough for a can of Tennents Super.

He may not get it all in one chunk the judge has to take lots into account.

I had to check. It was £188,000 and not £188.00. Even after the deficit in legal fees charged/recovered, he can have a drink. Good luck to him. He always came across to me as a good guy. Not that I would have wanted to be married to him or anything.

Yea true.I've no doubt his heart is/was in the right place and he's a good lad.I also realise that alcoholism is a terrible disease.Let's not forget what he has put his family through though-especially the abuse that Sheryl suffered, and the numerous attempts to help him get "clean"...
